Question:
Three largest inconsistencies in the Bible?
2008-05-05 11:46:53 UTC
In your opinion, what are the three largest inconsistencies in the Christian Bible that make you believe that the Bible cannot be taken 100% literally?

Please do not answer unless you are going to give me three or more items that directly answer the question, I am an objective person looking for direct subjective answers. Cheers,

As soon as those so-called inconsistancies arrive, I will

use the manuscripts and enlighten you to whats missing.

OKAY: EDIT VERITE:

1. The Bible does not state this earth is 6000 years old;

it states quite the contrary, that this earth is eons and eons in age, in fact there was an entire earth age before this one we live in now. It was in that prior earth age that Satan rebelled

wanting the throne reserved for Christ.

Its unlearned creationists who spread the garbage that the

bible insists the earth is 6000 yrs old; Read 2peter chapter 3 and try to understand the three earth ages.

2. This one is ridiculous; Its not inconsistancy here -

Jesus Christ did not come to dump the cup of wrath out; that time is prophecied for Christs SECOND RETURN; the first

was to teach and to be crucified. Nobody would have followed him and allowed him to teach them if he was pouring vengence out. Get real, dude.

There will be a time for that cup of wrath and you can have

all the vengence and wrath you can ever hope for, I promise.

3. This isn't even a point. Do you understand what the

word "inconsistancy" means?

EDIT TO "INTEREST..": The only inconsistancy you state with clarity is with regard to Adam and Eve - "where did all the rest of the people come from"; here's your answer:

God created all the races on the SIXTH DAY. Adam and Eve came on the scene on the EIGHTH DAY. When Cain was thrown outta the garden, he went to Nod to where the SIXTH day creation were living, and he took a wife there.

There were THOUSANDS of people on Earth when Adam was formed to care for the Garden.

EDIT CHRISTIAN THE ATHIEST: You too aren't being

specific, except mentioning the geneology of Christ. He

was born into the line of the Tribes of Judah and Levi -

the King line and the Priest line, making him our King and High Priest. To understand the geneology you would have to look to Marys family. Its the same as John the Baptist,

who was Christ's first cousin, as Elizabeth -Johns mother

- was marys mothers sister. Marys mom was of the Tribe of Judah, and Marys father was a Levitical Priest.

Its really amazing how people will call something inconsistant instead of admitting that they do not understand what they are reading. Astounding.

1) The chronology between Adam and Eve to Jesus Christ is sufficiently clear in the Bible. That presents a huge problem because we KNOW that humans have been around for more than 6000 years.

2) The inconsistency between the OT God and the NT God, in actions and personality. Usually folks chalk it up to "we're seeing different sides of God"... but that's patently absurd.

3) The outlandish stories that are physically impossible (though they're told as if they're not miracles, but could actually happen... like Noah's Ark and Flood for example)... combined with the fact that other Mesopotamian stories are strikingly similar AND pre-date the Jewish stories.

I could go on and on.

I could come up with 30 reasons the flood is absolutely absurd.

Jesus doesn't fit the Jewish prophecy. It fits quite a few vague ones but over all he still fails.

Just common sense. Let's say you are one of eight people left in the world and just spent over a year on a boat full of animals. Don't you tell your kids about this? It will stay with them too, look how bible belt fundies pass this crap on. Why the hell are there thousands of other religions then? If one was true there be only one.

The Bible is a collection of books of many different types.

These books were written by many authors over 2000 years.

The last ones were completed nearly 2000 years ago.

Some books are allegory or myth, some outright fiction,

others are poetry, music, fables, law, history, etc.

Very little from the Old Testament should be taken literally.

It's the Christian gospels & epistles which are most reliable.

Realyytrue you do realize that you you didn't even vaguely touch on Vertide's points right?

I can't necessarily say it's large but, in Genesis the plants are made before the sun. There are multiple and different account of what Jesus said/what happened to him.

It's fiction. How do you back up a story somebody made up?

There are inconsistencies in Harry Potter too probably.

actually, there are no inconsistencies.

If you take them completely out of context, maybe you'll find one, but then again, that's not really finding any is it?

Despite my best efforts to thwart it, the Bible is one of the most accurate books ever written. Everything in it is historically correct. Science tries endlessly to prove it wrong, and yet it only proves the Bible to be true.

As for taking it literally; you don't have to look in the Book to find why it can't be taken literally. Look at society today. Many women HAVE to work despite the Biblical teachings and many of today's laws conflict with it also. We don't have slaves, or herd goats across the land anymore.

I hope you find what you're looking for, but then again, I hope you don't. People need something to believe in, and the Bible seems to have hope where all seems hopeless.

1) The stories of the flood, there are two..

2) The birth of Jesus, only mentioned in two of the four gosples and they don't match...

3) The Adam & Eve story, where did everyone else come from ( don't count explainations that are not in the Bible)

There are many more ... just my top three at this time...

There are none, the 4 gospels tell the same story from 4 different perspectives.

Inconsistency with history (Tower of Babel, Exodus, date of Jesus' birth)

Internal inconsistency (Multiple creation events, differing genealogies for Jesus, differing stories about the Resurrection)

Inconsistency with observable facts (bats aren't birds, rabbits chew their cud, pi valued at 3)

I has been interpreted each time it was translated.

Each interpretation has been politically influenced.

There is no clear time line.

There are no inconsistencies in the BIBLE.Only false doctrines errant teachings and misunderstandings. db

If you are going by sheer volume, I would have to say the global flood.
