In the opening pages of the Book of Mormon, there is a page titled "The testimony of the prophet Joseph Smith" and it says "The Prophet Joseph smith's own words about the coming forth of the Book of Mormon are: BUT my question is WHEN did he write this description of events leading up to this. When did he record this? What year, and if possible, where was he when he recorded this testimony of the Book of Mormon? Thanks!

This description was started in 1838. It was recorded in 1839 in Nauvoo.

The History of Joseph Smith was written in 1838, eight years after the translation of the Book of Mormon. Joseph Smith's testimony is taken from his history.

He spoke of that story frequently, probably at least several times per week in private conversation, it actually starts out referring to the misconceptions that abounded by the story due to the fact that it was verbally told so many times.

The official version was written in 1838.

There are an abundance of prior versions out there, they usually have different points included - but not a single one contradicts the others. This is a sign of truth, because with a lie people repeat the same lie over and over, Joseph Smith would speak off-the-cuff and sometimes would mention one thing, sometimes another, but nothing he ever said would cause other parts to be excluded.

Joseph's first vision came when he was 14 years of age(1819) and he continued writing his experiences and revelations until his death in 1844. It is likely that his descriptions of the Book of Mormon came quite early in his life (1819-1830) leading up to the founding of The Church of Jesus

Christ of Latter-Day-Saints in 1830. Section 5 of the Doctrine and Covenants given in March, 1829

gives a closer look at his testimony of the translation of the Book of Mormon "And you have the power

to translate the plates and this is the first gift that I (the Lord) bestowed upon you" In addition he

(Joseph Smith) wrote a description of receiving the gold plates right after September 21, 1823.

The currently accepted version of the Joseph Smith history was released in the 20th century. Joseph Smith's official scribe jotted down a version to which only slight alterations were made in 1838.

Prior to that, he wrote an account of the first vision in 1832, which differs from his later account in the number of Gods present, the year it happened, and the reason that he went into the grove.

The bit that you are quoting was written by a scribe in 1838, six years later than the one that he wrote down himself. I know that when I have discussions with Mormons, they like to deny the things that Brigham Young said by blaming the scribe for incorrectly recording his words; shouldn't that give his OWN, HANDWRITTEN account more prestige?
