It would seem the crux of the matter is the definition of the word 'soul'.
There is the common idea, taught by many churches, that it is some wispy, invisible thing that lives on and on.
That, of course, is false.
The soul, according to the very book that introduced the word, is a person.
Please note Genesis 2:7:
"God proceeded to form the man out of dust from the ground and to blow into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man came to be a living soul. . ."
Man came to BE a soul ......not have one.
You ARE a soul.
Therefore, in the 2 cases you cite, if it is considered a human life, it IS a soul.
