I I lived in 40 AD, I would be a Roman. Tacitus mentions Christ being killed and some of his followers being executed by Nero.

Eric, Josephus was born years after Jesus supposedly died. In 40 CE he would have been a toddler. And the only mention he makes of Jesus is in question: He mentions "James, the brother of Jesus, who is called the Christ".. and by this time, there were of course already many Christians.

But even if Jesus, the man, had actually existed (which I personally think he probably did), that does not mean there is a God. Does the existence of Sathya Sai Baba mean there is a God? How about Joseph Smith, or Muhammed?

Your argument is foolish.
That's A Bingo!

It's doubtful that Josephus ever heard of Christ...since documents were hand copied until the 1500s, someone during the copy process simply stuck the Jesus statements into Josephus' writings in an attempt to elevate knowledge of Jesus earlier than is realistic in that historical context. If it were true, then at the very least Josephus' glowing description of Jesus would have compelled him to become a follower of Christ, and we know from the rest of his writings he did not, nor did he even write anymore lines (glowing or otherwise) about Christ.

Josephus was a Jew (and law-observant), not an atheist.

He was 3 years old in 40 AD, thus born 4 years after the alleged crucifixion of Jesus.

Some historians claim that part of his mentioning of Jesus has been added later by others.

Yes, I'm still an atheist.

1. That never happened

2. The Josephus text is a later forgery

3. Josephus was not an atheist

4. The Jesus story is plagiarized from various older myths

5. Better luck next time

Nice question.

And I already knew about Josephus, the Roman Jew.

You have to understand that Jews benefited mostly from spreading lies about their religion. They were proficient in creating history and legends that never happened. To serve their interests.

What did Jews like Josephus gain from supposed rebellion in Canaan of Jesus?

Roman Citizenship and legalizing Christianity.

Need I say more?

I heard of Josephus when reading about the Tower of Babel meant to be built by people of Marduk? Or some sumerian leader, I forgot the name.

The roman jew using the jesus example, was only comparing myths of the Middle East to preach to romans about changing their minds about something or other. Like all "authors" did at the time.

Propaganda and papers were invented by Caesar in Rome. Coincidence that Jews then and now still dictate what is being typed on them?

If you heard there were ancient writers who talk about Hercules, Zeus, Aphrodite, Nemesis, even Before 40 AD, would you have believed in their existance?

There are authors who say Zeus was real and was the kind of Crete at their time.

Or greek authors who frequently speak about their gods as real, only unlike Josephus they actually speak about personally talking to them or direct experiences and accounts of people they knew.

Josephus only spoke in the third person. Never knew Jesus or anyone from Canaan. Otherwise there should be a roman author Josephus mentioned in the Bible to say "Wow I must write about this in Rome, in the other book you will hear about!"

Josephus wasn't an atheist, he was a Jew.

The Testamonium Flavium is widely regarded as a Christian forgery.

Atheism isn't the denial of Jesus' existence, it's the lack of belief in deities. This would include the claims about the divinity *of* Jesus. Two different things. Plenty of non-Christians believe Jesus existed, and yet still aren't Christians, so yes, I'm still an atheist, just as they are still Jews, Muslims, etc etc.

Wow. I am now irreversibly convinced that too many Jesus freaks are low on the intelligence scale. The evidence is patently obvious in your grammatically-challenged writing.

EVERY biblical scholar worth his salt knows that the Jesus entry in one of Josephus' massive historical works was a FORGERY, dude. Jesus is a myth, an amalgam of earlier god-men myths from Persia, Egypt, Phoenicia, Greece, Sumeria, etc. Jesus does not exist outside of the fairy tale that is the New Testament.

Read and weep.

Jesus was merely a person and nothing more. Jesus was not the son of God. Jesus did not walk on water, or turn water in to wine...

I question this so-called miracles that this Jesus performed

Oh man, why waste my time on that. Seeing as how I am native american descent I would have absolutely no contact with the "old world" so I wouldn't know about Jesus. I would prepare my people for the invasion. Teach them everything I know.

If I was there at that time I would say he is a fake and definitely not a god. I would still be an atheist.

Let me just start off by saying 2 sentences about pure bullshit will not change my opinion. Okay, back to my answer. You are correct, I was not there, and those who were there are all long gone, therefore I, nor anyone can be completely sure.

Just because a person named Jesus existed, doesn't mean he was god.

Therefore, I would still be an atheist.
