Christmas is nothing to do with either Christianity or Islam but it does have it's origins in the midwinter festival and many other basically pagan rites but since much of it is a celebration of nature rather than religion everyone should be able to enjoy it and be happy together despite religion!

The ancient European pagans celebrated the midwinter festival and a number of other festivals long before Christianity ever existed!

Babylonians celebrated the feast of the Son of Isis with gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift giving and the goddess of fertility, love, and war.

The Romans held a festival on 25 December called “Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, celebrating their own god Sol Invictas – PAGAN!

The Persian god Mithras, the Syrian sun god Elah Gabal, the German Sol, the Greek Helios and the Mesopotamian Shamash. But also Saturnalia, honouring Saturn, the God of Agriculture. The law courts and schools were closed. No public business could be transacted an this is where the holidays originated - ALL PAGAN!

Wax tapers were given by the more humble to their superiors. The origin of the Christmas candle - PAGAN!

In Rome groups of costumed went from house to house entertaining their people. And this was where the carolling Christmas tradition originated PAGAN!

Statues of the Mother and lover or Mother and son were paraded through the streets not only in Italy but also in Africa, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany and Bulgaria. Thus, the symbolism of the Heavenly Virgin and the infant child paraded on a yearly basis are not of Christian origin. They stem from the Mother-goddess religion, which is very ancient ENTIRELY PAGAN!

Scandinavian countries celebrated Yule honouring Thor – PAGAN!

In Germania (not Germany) they celebrated midwinter night followed by 12 wild nights of eating and drinking. The 12 days of Christmas PAGAN!

The church under Pope Julius I declared that Christ’s birth would be celebrated on December 25 in 350 AD in order to try to hijack the PAGAN festivals but it was largely ignored. Christians did not really celebrate Christmas until 378 but it was then dropped in 381 and not resurrected until 400.

The Christmas tree stems from pagan tradition and ritual surrounding the Winter Solstice, which included the use of holly boughs ivy and other foliage as an adaptation of pagan tree worship. Holly and ivy represented male and female. Mistletoe was considered a sacred plant, and the custom of kissing under the mistletoe began as a fertility ritual - all PAGAN!

Santa Claus came from the Dutch “Sinterklaas” and was a tall figure riding a white horse through the air and usually accompanied by Black Peter, an elf who punished disobedient children. Also the origin of the reindeer, sleigh and the elves ALL PAGAN!

The modern red coated Santa was brought about by coca cola!

AMERICA ACTUALLY BANNED CHRISTMAS several times and is the originator of the expression “Happy Holidays” which came about because of the pagan origins of Christmas to include all religions and traditions!

The Venerable Bede, an early Christian writer pointed out that the Christian church absorbed Pagan practices when it found the population unwilling to give up the festivals. Thus a lot of what Christians now see as Christians practices are in fact pagan!

Christmas is the time of year christians strive to prove just how pagan they have become

NO not beyond all doubt. SANE, educated people know that there can be TWO THINGS happening at one time.... really!! THe pagan festivals of the time were to worship the sun, fire, thunder.... THAT is a fact. the date for Christmas was chose for two reasons.... 1) the star and 2) yes the pagan festivals of the time. most people that were converting to Christianity were pagans.... had to convert from something :)

really get an education in reality.... if i moved to your country and became a citizen, while i would HAVE BEEN an American i would have CONVERTED.... get it?!

Christmas (Christ Mass) isn't a pagan holiday. This Christian holiday, at it's core, is about Christ's birth. Had Christ never been born and had the Church never existed, we wouldn't even be celebrating today, Christmas, worldwide!

Moreover, nowhere, in the relevant Bible, does it say we shouldn't celebrate Christ's birth. Also, when the Church chose the date for Christmas, it had nothing to do with being a supposed date of Christ's birth nor should it have to.

Furthermore, long ago, when different pagans of different belief systems celebrated their holidays on various days throughout the winter season, they never called these different holidays Christmas (WE CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS); and our decorations, from different pagan religions, that have gradually been absorbed into the Christian holiday, Christmas, have a completely different function from what the various pagan religions used the respective items for. At it's core, Christmas is about Christ's birth, and Christmas also contains rich elements/tradition shaped by Christians.

Nowadays, their use and function are due to Christians and Christian tradition. For instance, the fact that ham is simply food for everyone on Christmas, and not a blood sacrifice to appease the gods in the north, is because of Christians. The fact that the mistletoe isn't worshipped in forests by Druid peoples, but used for kissing mostly indoors, is due to Christians. The fact that we have decorated Christmas trees with presents placed around it is a Christian invention by Saint Boniface and actually represents a life-saving victory over a pagan ritual practice of human sacrifice to a tree that Saint Boniface stopped! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_tree

And Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas (Sanctus Nicolaus) , the patron saint of children and the less fortunate who was known as having a large beard and giving gifts wherever he went. For example, the reason we have stockings at the fireplace is derived from a narrative about Saint Nicholas filling the fireplace-hanging/drying socks of poor girls with gold coins when St Nicholas stopped by. Thereafter, other children began traditionally hanging their socks and stockings by the fireplace in hopes of them being filled. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Claus

Jesus was concieved on December 25th according to scripture. You have the geneology of Christ in Luke 1-3. Here you see where Mary came to visit her cousin Elizabeth who was the wife of Zachariah and mother of John the baptist. Now when you consider that Zachariah was a levitical priest and had been serving his course of abiyah and had completed his levitical duties in the temple around july 23, he had to walk home about 40 miles which took him 2 days in that time and He knew his wife and she became pregnant, that would be that she conceived on july 25th. (The angel of the lord had told zachariah this would come to pass.)

When mary came to visit elizabeth, john the baptist leaped in her womb of joy that he was in the presence of the christ child in the womb of his mother, this was on december 25th, elizabeth was 6 months pregnant, and mary had just concieved.

december 25th is is when christ began to dwell with man on earth, (the conception). Christ was born in September.

As the scripture gives you the shepards were watching the flock, this does not happen in that region in december.

Some celebrate birth on December 25th, I do celebrate the conception on december 25th, and so do other christians. It is up to you to choose when you want to celebrate and don't worry so much about the date you choose. The reason is the love of christ and the salvation he brought to mankind.

+ Christmas +

Christmas (the Mass of Christ) is (and always has been) the Eucharistic celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, God the Son.

The angel said to them,

"Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find an infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger."

And suddenly there was a multitude of the heavenly host with the angel, praising God and saying:

"Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests."

(Luke 2:10-14)

Christmas is in no way a pagan holiday.

No one knows the exact day when Jesus was born. If a date close to the winter solstice was chosen for Christmas to make conversion of pagans to Christianity easier then what is the harm of that? One could probably find a pagan holiday close to any date on the calendar.

+ Xmas+

Using Xmas for Christmas used to bother me a lot then I learned that X is really a common and ancient Greek abbreviation for Christ.

Jesus Christ in Greek is ΙΗΣΟΥΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΣ and written in the English alphabet is "IHCOYC XPICTOC" or "IHSOYS XPISTOS"

Starting in the third century the nomina sacra, or names of Jesus, were sometimes shortened by contraction in Christian inscriptions, resulting in sequences of Greek letters such as:

• Jesus •

I (iota)

IH (iota eta)

IC (iota sigma) (first and last letter)

IHC (iota eta sigma)

IHS (iota eta sigma)

JH (iota eta)

JC (iota sigma)

JHC (iota eta sigma)

JHS (iota eta sigma)

• Christ •

X (chi)

XP (chi rho)

XC (chi sigma) (first and last letter)

XPC (chi rho sigma)

XPS (chi rho sigma)

• Jesus Christ •

IX

IC XC

IHS XPS

JX

JC XC

JHS XPS

The Greek letter sigma has been translated as both "C" and "S"

The Greek letter iota has been translated as both "I" and "J"

If abbreviating the name of Jesus Christ is good enough for the ancient Christian catacombs then I will let it slide.

"No; but I say that the things which the nations sacrifice they sacrifice to demons, and not to God; and I do not want YOU to become sharers with the demons. 21 YOU cannot be drinking the cup of Jehovah and the cup of demons; YOU cannot be partaking of “the table of Jehovah” and the table of demons. 22 Or “are we inciting Jehovah to jealousy”? We are not stronger than he is, are we?" (1 Corinthians 10:20-22. Bible).

Christmas is ROOTED in Pagan holidays - Sol Invictus, Horus's birth, the Winter Solstice, Saturnalia and they use the same type of symbols; Christmas trees, wreaths, holly, mistletoe, Yule logs, etc.
