Sow to yourselves according to righteousness, reap according to mercy, break up your fallow ground; for it is time to seek the LORD, till He come and cause righteousness to rain upon you.
Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity, ye have eaten the fruit of lies; for thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men.
This indicates repentance.
Clearly then you also must not put your trust in yourself, nor in men no matter how mighty or eminent in church circles. You must look only to the Lord and trust only in Him and depend only upon Him.
For that you will surely need to be much in His word, examining, pondering and seeking for Him to speak through His word. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
It is after all His work, not yours for none of our works are acceptable to Him, but you must be willing for Him to do the work no matter what you must go through. in this regard the cross is vital.
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
Hear also the Apostle Paul's example :
And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
Sin hardens the heart and deadens the conscience so to follow his example will plough up the ground of the heart to keep it soft and receptive.
Those who seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand - By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
For this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them - were so because they knew not their need.
Therefore seek for God to show you your need and do not be surprised if what you see abhors you and frightens you. That would be good and a blessing for then you would fly to Him and it would keep you humble and tender.
Finally why not also take the advice of the Apostle Peter?
According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue:
Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
---Think on that! We are to live by His life not ours. But he continues ---
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;
And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;
And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.
For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
