I'm not being rude and i'm not challenging your beliefs. I'm just curious as to the following: If there's no life after death, then we have no purpose. So if we have no purpose, why do you keep trying to prove Christians wrong? Christians and Athiests will end up the same anyways if there's no purpose.

There is no purpose for Christians either, except the false superstitions of your beliefs. I don't believe in God, and I find great purpose in life, science, and helping people. I don't need false beliefs to give me meaning.

It isn't even remotely logical to imply that we have no purpose if we have no life after death. For as many delusions as we have about life it is still a core instinct for living things to want to live and to have young that will live. I could just as easily argue that what purpose is this life if you are going to live forever anyway? That logic would imply that death should not be avoided. It would also suggest that I place less value on the lives that we have now. To believe this is the only life that we have now gives us great responsibility in protecting and nurturing others. Our purpose, meaning, or even our function can be found in every other living thing as well. Without this needed desire we simply wouldn't exist. It is natural and has been selected through evolution as being the fittest path to survival for higher functioning beings. Our purpose is to live and perpetuate the conditions for our survival.

How about Altruism as a purpose? Doing good for others. Making this planet a better place for future generations.

If that isn't a purpose, then I don't know what is? The selfish hope of an eternal life? How on earth is that even remotely a purpose?

we dont have a "devine" purpose. we do have a purpose on this earth but not one that came from some supreme being. your purpose on this earth is different for every person. it may be to raise a family, create jobs, or to be a bum in your parents basement. your purpose on this earth is what ever you make of your life. and i dont keep trying to prove christians wrong, just correcting the stupid ones who say the bible is 100% true and is without error so we should all bow down before the word of god (ie, a book written about 1500 years ago)

Your question suggests that our entire 'purpose' will be after we're dead! What happens to the time we are alive for goodness sake?

Personally I prefer to accept that I am alive, I will die and so I need to get on with living. While I'm here I plan to appreciate life as much as I can and help others to do so to the best of my ability.

Isn't that purpose enough?

I don't try to prove anyone wrong. I state what I think and believe.

Why does life need a purpose? What makes man (in general) think he's so great that his life must mean something? The purpose of life is to die and go to heaven? What kind of purpose is that?

And please, to all of you - it's atheist. I know that it's pronounced a-thee-est, but it's not spelled that way. If you don't want snarky answers, start by spelling it right.

Why would you say there is no purpose? There is this thing called LIFE you know. We try to make the best of that and not worry about some imaginary candy-land after death.

We have no intrinsic purpose. That does not mean that we have no purpose. We decide for ourselves what our purpose is. Theists have decided it deals with their god. Non-theists decide it's something else or nothing. We are all deciding our purpose the only difference is that theists tend to have their purpose handed to them and they take it on like a coat one would wear, while non-theists are more individualized about what their purpose is. Most of us don't even bother to worry about an overall purpose. Is not the purpose of life 'to live'?

The reasons that I have to speak out against religion are many and various. "Purpose" is not one of them.

No there isn't a purpose! Really. Just that we seem to be able to deal with this fact and live happy lives regardless. We will all end up the same, dead like a piece of meat, not a noce thought but the truth isn't always pleasurable-hence the invention of religion! Drop the comfort blanket and come with us....

I am a Christian, and I don't believe in heaven or hell. I believe that what happens after death is not meant to be known but I do think that people who have embraced the Lord with open arms throughout their lives will have bigger and better things ahead of them. I do believe that if you choose not to embrace the Lord, then it is as if there is no life after death. As in you're just dead.

No one is trying to prove christians wrong though we may be guilty of trying to get people to think outside of one book. We'd leave all religions alone if people would stop trying to put them into our schools, laws and government.

Life has whatever purpose you give it. Atheists know how much life is precious because we realize we only have one so we'd better make it count.

I certainly don't speak for all atheists, but I do it just for something to do. You know something besides the gay sex, orgies, drug use, listening to Marilyn Manson and Howerd Stern, and worshipping satan.

Or maybe I'm not trying to prove anyone wrong. I just get really frustrated when Christians (esp. born agains) try to force all that crap down my throat.

Which ever.

Just because life doesn't have some divine purpose doesn't mean it isn't valuable. To spend time searching for knowledge and expressing ideas is not a waste. We just don't need a surveillance camera in the sky to do it

"If there's no life after death, then we have no purpose."

Who says so? Who says that something has to happen afterward for a purpose to be realized now??

That is the most WHACK comment I've ever heard!

Do you know what is truly sad? You think your cult gives you purpose, and you have to have spirits and invisible deities to give your life meaning! THAT is SAD!

Put your bible down and lose the cult!!

Theists, especially christians, try to control and restrict us based on their views. If all christians stop crusading against science, culture, art, sex and sexuality, religious freedom and such, and stop telling everybody else they're going to be tortured throughout eternity unless they join you, I assure you that you won't encounter nearly as much hostility.

If someone wants to make their life's purpose to argue with Christians, what business is it of yours?

Perhaps atheists are just trying to make the world a better place by ridding it of ignorant, destructive superstitions.

who said anything about having a purpose???

Consider this:

1: You didn't choose to exist.

2: Now that you exist, you have needs and desires.

3: Continuing to exist, and fulfilling those needs and desires, must (I hope) seem more attractive than the alternative.

That's really all there is to it.

Of course we have a purpose. It's the same as every other animal on the planet. The continuation of the species.

Atheism. You know it makes sense.

The only difference being is that if the Christians are right, they get to say so.....if the atheists is right they will never know. Kind of sad don't you think??
