My friend thinks Islam is a peaceful religion..

I came to the conclusion from reading and watching dozens of lectures and books about the actions of religion as a whole, including islam.

She came back and said, those are all lies and that you have to go to the source ( the muslims ). She has muslim friends and she said they say Islam is meant for peace

Ok, here's my understanding on the subject. Any person (or group of people) can take any part of any religion and twist it. Now the twisting does not have to be done intentionally to cause harm. It may just be that (those) particular individual(s) understanding of their chosen religion. In my opinion the majority of the world's religions, in and of themselves) are not meant to cause harm to others. I grew up a Muslim, unfortunately it was in the NOI. Now those folks do have violence issues built into the teachings.

I believe what I do about religions in general for multi-faucted reasons. #1 If the universe was created with intention by a sentient being, this being then created us all (whether or not we wish to accept that). That being would not need our help to chastise anyone for anything period, whatsoever. That being would not incite us to cause harm to our "siblings" by promising us rewards that we can not realize evidence of while still alive. Also that being would know the whats, whys, wherefores and therefores of every single particle in the entire universe from it's creation on; so having that knowledge would preclude any of us from having to make or be made examples of or for any of the rest of us. The outcome is already known; a long, very long time ago.

If the universe can into existance of it's own volition, then all the fighting and killing etc, is infact of our own manufacture. In school most of us learned 3 facts; #1 There is always an equal and opposite reaction to every action, #2 Matter can neither be destroyed nor created; # Energy can neither be created or destroyed. In #1 and #2 the subject is either transformed, or transmitted into something else. All of that means to me, that there is no peace without war, no light without dark...etc; what goes around comes around...soforth and so on. With that as a basis, though I do not like, though it scares the crap out of me, though it is something I (and many others I assume) wish were otherwise, there is no religion does not have a dark side; ( it is impossible); nothing exsists without it's opposite, and even the oppsites have opposites. We are all subject to both the positive and negative aspects of any religion that is with in our circle of life (where we live, work, play, etc.) We need to accept that and make plans to move our lives ahead dispite what may come along from other people practicing their religion. I hope this makes sense...I often find myself rambling. If anyone is interested, if you don't get what I mean I will be happy to try explain it better (not making any promises that the 2nd effort will be better though).

Hey there.:)

I am a Muslim and yes, Islam is a religion of peace.

Islam is not only a religion but a way of life. Every single aspect of life has been thought to us. And everything revolves around good character and kindness.

Let's take a practical look at the daily life of a Muslim.

1) When we greet each other, we say "Assalamu Alaikum" (Peace Be Unto You)

2) It is compulsory for us to give charity.

3) We gets reward, just by smiling at someone for the sake of God.

4) We are thought to respect our parents.

5) It is a great sin to backbite or slander anyone.

6) Lying is forbidden.

7)Elderly people as well as young children have to be treated with kindness and respect.

8) Having pride is not allowed.

9) We are thought not to mock , tease or make fun of anyone.

10) We are thought to be fair and transparent in business.

11) Stinginess and bad morals are not allowed.

12) We are thought that if people who are ignorant try to address us, we should reply with words of peace.

13)Cleanliness and good hygiene is a great part is Islam.

14)Gifts to each other brings about unity.

15) We are thought not to judge others.

16) We are thought to control our anger.

I could honestly go on and on. However many Muslims today do not practice many of these practices.

May God give everyone, firstly me, to practice what I'm saying.:)

Your friend us right. Islam is peaceful. Why would a religion with over 2 billion followers be all violent? If that were the case then everyone would be dead. Stop believing everything you see on TV. TV is owned by Zionists. USA and Israel are zionists. Israel is killing Palestenians (Muslims and somd Christians) and USA is attempting to invade Syria and causs a World War, obvioualy they will lie about Islam so people like you can hate on it. You should listen to your friend more, she knows whats up.

Islam is a peaceful religion.

Also, its good that you read books and watch lectures with people who are knowledgeable about our religion. Those are not all lies, although make sure you are watching and reading reliable sources.

A lot of muslims are peaceful. However, there is not much choice of religion in their area of the world either. Furthermore, It seems that the more 'fundamental muslims' tend to be more violent. Might have to do with the founder of that religion setting the example.

It all depends at which angle to look at it from. Based on % of voilent people in religion = maybe peaceful. Based on example set by the founder or culture it is from = not so peaceful.

Most Muslims are peaceful thus the religion of Islam is mainly practiced peacefully. Sure, the Qur'an has violent scriptures but so does the Christian Bible and the Torah.

In my experience it appears that the mainstream religions are practiced one of two ways:

1) Culturally, with a dismissal of most if not all of its doctrine.

2) Doctrinally, a strict adherence to the scriptural doctrine. A literal interpretation. The "fundies" in other words.

Your friend is right that most Muslims are peaceful (as most people in general are peaceful). Your friends Muslim friends are probably fairly clueless about their own religion.

The more 'pure' Muslims are, the more they study their religion in the forms taught in Muslim universities in the Middle East, the more they strive to be observant Muslims, the more accepting they tend to be of violence.

Islam as it is taught in Muslim universities is quite intolerant and requires its followers to commit violence, or even to kill people in some circumstances.

All religions, including Islam, look much different from the outside looking in than it does from the inside looking out. They all delude themselves with the idea that they're all for peace while their holy book is anything but peaceful, they see only what they want to see.

Well, Islam is not ultimately peaceful as being peaceful with a murderer, killer, tyrant, raper, etc isn't justice. Don't bother yourself what this and that says about the religion, just go the fundamental and basic issues in that religion and learn it by yourself and have your own opinion. There are bias and prejudice people out there, do you want to follow their own opinion or have your own intellectual reflection?

Many of the responses here indicate that "true" Islam is a religion of peace.

But, this is wrong for two reasons.

First, Islam is not simply a religion, but both a religion and a political system. While many claim that the religion of Islam is beautiful, the political system is not. Islam's political system seeks to eliminate all other forms of government that oppose Allah's absolute rule.

Abu Ala Maududi, a leading Islamic scholar, in his book, “Jihad in the Cause of Allah” indicated:

“Islam is not merely a religious creed or compound name for a few forms of worship, but a comprehensive system which envisages to annihilate all tyrannical and evil systems in the world and enforces its own program of reform which it deems best for the well being of mankind.

“It must be evident to you from this description that the objective of Islamic jihad is to eliminate the rule of an un-Islamic system and establish in its stead an Islamic system of state rule. Islam does not intend to confine this revolution to a single state or a few countries: the aim of Islam is to bring about a universal revolution.”

It would behoove us to never speak about Islam as merely a religion again. Rather, consider saying that "Islam is a comprehensive religious and political system that strives for universal domination."

Second, while it is true that Islam seeks "peace," the definition of peace used by Muslims differs fundamentally from how non-Mulslims define peace.

Most non-Muslims would define peace as being able to live in a community, tolerating differences, in a state of harmony characterized by the lack of violence.

The Qur'an, however, tells us a condition required to usher in peace with its lack of fighting and violence.

Muhammad's recitation in Sura 8:39 commands Muslims: "So fight [jihad] them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief [non-Muslims]) and all submit to the religion of Allah alone (in the whole world)."

The cessation of violence and fighting will occur only when people universally submit to Allah's laws, that is, becomes Muslim.

Further, jihad is prescribed or required of all Muslims. Muhammad commanded all to fight in Suah 2:216 "Fighting [jihad] is prescribed for you, and ye dislike it. But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not."

Jihad, fighting in the cause of Allah, is not simply violence. It involves all activities that advance Islam. These include debating, dialoguing, preaching, writing, publishing, immigration into non-Muslim countries, financial activities, and self-sacrifice (including suicide missions).

The fact that 99.99% of Muslims are peaceful does not mean that Muslims are not engaging in jihad to promote Islam. Most support jihad financially. Only a few Muslims need to engage in violent jihad at any one time.

The men who flew planes into buildings on 9/11 were terrorists. The day before, on 9/10, they were simply peaceful Muslims practicing Islam, the religion of peace.

Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were nice kids on or before April 14th. But, on April 15th, 2013 they became terrorists when their pressure cooker bombs exploded during the Boston Marathon.

Nidal Malik Hasan was just an ordinary U.S. Army major and psychiatrist on November 4, 2009. But on the 5th he shouted "Allahu Akbar!" as he killed 13 people and shot and injured another 31. He considered himself a Soldier of Allah and regarded himself as a Mujahideen waging "jihad" against the United States.

These and many other Muslims were living peacefully among us for years, practicing the religion of peace until the time they became terrorists.

Islam, inherently, is not simply a religion but also a political system. Islam does not promote tolerance and harmonious multiculturalism. Rather, Islam seeks the total destruction of non-Islamic cultures and total obedience to the laws of Allah.

Your friend is so smart and I really want to give her a big hug!!!!!:)

1. Terrorism is above all murder. Murder is strictly forbidden in the Qur’an. Qur’an 6:151 says, “and do not kill a soul that God has made sacrosanct, save lawfully.” (i.e. murder is forbidden but the death penalty imposed by the state for a crime is permitted). 5:53 says, “… whoso kills a soul, unless it be for murder or for wreaking corruption in the land, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind; and he who saves a life, it shall be as if he had given life to all mankind.”

2. If the motive for terrorism is religious, it is impermissible in Islamic law. It is forbidden to attempt to impose Islam on other people. The Qur’an says, “There is no compulsion in religion. The right way has become distinct from error.” (-The Cow, 2:256). Note that this verse was revealed in Medina in 622 AD or after and was never abrogated by any other verse of the Quran. Islam’s holy book forbids coercing people into adopting any religion. They have to willingly choose it.

3. Islamic law forbids aggressive warfare. The Quran says, “But if the enemies incline towards peace, do you also incline towards peace. And trust in God! For He is the one who hears and knows all things.” (8:61) The Quran chapter “The Cow,” 2:190, says, “Fight in the way of God against those who fight against you, but begin not hostilities. Lo! God loveth not aggressors.”

4. In the Islamic law of war, not just any civil engineer can declare or launch a war. It is the prerogative of the duly constituted leader of the Muslim community that engages in the war. Nowadays that would be the president or prime minister of the state, as advised by the mufti or national jurisconsult.

5. The killing of innocent non-combatants is forbidden. According to Sunni tradition, ‘Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, the first Caliph, gave these instructions to his armies: “I instruct you in ten matters: Do not kill women, children, the old, or the infirm; do not cut down fruit-bearing trees; do not destroy any town . . . ” (Malik’s Muwatta’, “Kitab al-Jihad.”)

6. Terrorism or hirabah is forbidden in Islamic law, which groups it with brigandage, highway robbery and extortion rackets– any illicit use of fear and coercion in public spaces for money or power. The principle of forbidding the spreading of terror in the land is based on the Qur’an (Surah al-Ma’ida 5:33–34). Prominent [pdf] Muslim legal scholar Sherman Jackson writes, “The Spanish Maliki jurist Ibn `Abd al-Barr (d. 464/ 1070)) defines the agent of hiraba as ‘Anyone who disturbs free passage in the streets and renders them unsafe to travel, striving to spread corruption in the land by taking money, killing people or violating what God has made it unlawful to violate is guilty of hirabah . . .”

7. Sneak attacks are forbidden. Muslim commanders must give the enemy fair warning that war is imminent. The Prophet Muhammad at one point gave 4 months notice.

8. The Prophet Muhammad counseled doing good to those who harm you and is said to have commanded, “Do not be people without minds of your own, saying that if others treat you well you will treat them well, and that if they do wrong you will do wrong to them. Instead, accustom yourselves to do good if people do good and not to do wrong (even) if they do evil.” (Al-Tirmidhi)

9. The Qur’an demands of believers that they exercise justice toward people even where they have reason to be angry with them: “And do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness.”[5:8]

10. The Qur’an assures Christians and Jews of paradise if they believe and do good works, and commends Christians as the best friends of Muslims.

Quran 5:69 says (Arberry): “Surely they that believe, and those of Jewry, and the Christians, and those Sabeaans, whoso believes in God and the Last Day, and works righteousness–their wage waits them with their Lord, and no fear shall be on them, neither shall they sorrow.”

In other words, the Quran promises Christians and Jews along with Muslims that if they have faith and works, they need have no fear in the afterlife. It is not saying that non-Muslims go to hell– quite the opposite.

When speaking of the 7th-century situation in the Muslim city-state of Medina, which was at war with pagan Mecca, the Quran notes that the polytheists and some Arabian Jewish tribes were opposed to Islam, but then goes on to say:

5:82. ” . . . and you will find the nearest in love to the believers [Muslims] those who say: ‘We are Christians.’ That is because amongst them are priests and monks, and they are not proud.”
