What does it mean if God tells a man he is gonna be great and whom did God consider great in the Bible

I don't know if God ever told anyone that he was going to be great as an individual. It's pretty tough to do that without God's help anyway. But he did say that Abraham would be the father of many nations. I think he also said that he son Ishmael would also be the father of a "great" nation, some say his decedents are the Arabs. The wise men, and another priest said that "Jesus" was great, and we're told that after Christ's baptism a loud voice was heard saying, "This is my Son, and in him I am well pleased," but I think that's the closest anyone ever got to being "great." David was "a man after God's own heart," but these are mostly all very humble sentiments.

Even biblically (for those who still believe) God didn't tell a man he was "going to be great"... He had more the style to tell someone that He was going to do great things with that man - if that man remained obedient.



But if I hear someone nowadays tell me that "God told me I'm going to be great".. I tend to stay as far away from that person as possible - even if God did have great plans for him - his pride has just jumped in the way.
