I'm a Chinese, not a Christian and right now I am so eager to know all the history of Christianity and I learn a lot from it today through the internet. But I have a question, look at this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus and on the right hand side box, it stated Father of Jesus is God (Christianity views) but I wanted to know who or what is the name of God as the father of Jesus? couldn't find anywhere on the net.

The answer is to be found in most translations of the Bible at Psalms 83:18. "18 That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth."

In the King James Version, the name Jehovah is found at Exodus 6:3; Psalm 83:18; Isaiah 12:2; 26:4.

With Today’s English Version: A footnote on Exodus 6:3 states: “THE LORD: . . . Where the Hebrew text has Yahweh, traditionally transliterated as Jehovah, this translation employs LORD with capital letters, following a usage which is widespread in English versions.”

Both The Holy Bible translated by Robert Young and The Bible in Living English, S. T. Byington and even The ‘Holy Scriptures’ translated by J. N. Darby: The name Jehovah appears throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, also in many footnotes on Christian Greek Scripture texts, beginning with Matthew 1:20.

The New World Translation has the name Jehovah is used in both the Hebrew and the Christian Greek Scriptures in this translation, appearing 7,210 times.

Either "Jehovah" or "Yahweh" are equally correct translations from the Tetragrammaton. What the name of God is called written in Hebrew. Four consonants without any vowels for the only manuscripts left are after the time when a superstition overtook Hebrew scribes that writing or voicing the name of God was a sin. Too holy for sinful humans to say. Clearly though it is not or his book written under divine inspiration would not use it over 7,000 times.

God does have a name as he is an individual, not just a title of position.

We can only work this out once we realise that the Bible says Jesus was eternally with God in heaven before He emptied Himself of His glory in the Godhead and became the baby born to the virgin Mary. John 1:1-3 shows this, and also that Jesus is the Creator. He was never created. He added human nature to His divine nature in order to become human.

If you read Hebrews chapter 1 you will get a wonderful picture of how glorious Jesus is, with God commanding all the angels to worship Him. That's also in Revelation chapter 3 verse 21, chapter 5 verse 6 & 11-14, and chapter 7 verses 15-17.

Now, Jesus cannot be a second God, in addition to God the Father (Jesus' own name for God). The Bible is clear that there is only one God, the Creator, and all other gods are false gods. So when John 1:1 says Jesus is God, we must realise there is more to God than the Father in heaven. We get a glimpse of that when we realise who resurrected Jesus from the grave; the Father resurrected Him, the Son did, and also the Holy Spirit did! All three persons in the Godhead combined to do that, just as they combined for the creation. Read Acts 2:24 & 2 Corinthians 4:14, John 10:18 and 2:19-21, and Romans 8:11.

The Christian view is that the One Being of God subsists in the three persons of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. None were ever created. This enables us to realise just who it was who died for our sins on the cross - it was God, in Christ, reconciling the world to Himself. Jesus HAD to be much more than a perfect human to atone for all the sins in the world! Only God has the magnitude to pay such a price. That is why Jesus added human nature to His divine nature - to pay to the Father the legal price / punishment for our sins, so that we could be forgiven. It's amazing!

Jesus was said to be born by the virgin Mary. Mary's husband was Joseph a carpenter. Jesus was born on a stable.

It was claimed that God sent his son Jesus down to earth to help the people and therefore Mary got pregnant without sex as foretold in a dream.

I don't believe all of this though, sounds impossible.

And remember, in Christianity they believe in the trinity: The Father, the son and the holy spirit. (They are all one).

Most Christians believe that Jesus is God. When we say that Jesus is the Son of God, that simply means Jesus is the human representation of God in the flesh on Earth. We also believe he is at the same time separate from God, forming a "trinity" with God-the Father, God-the Son and God-the Holy Spirit.

A few verses from scripture help show how we come to this conclusion:

John 1:1-17

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God — children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

(John testified concerning him. He cried out, saying, “This is the one I spoke about when I said, ‘He who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’”) Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is himself God and is in closest relationship with the Father, has made him known. "

Some people may not be aware there is still persecution of Christians in China today:

Can you confirm this? I hope others here will be considerate of such a serious decision to convert to Christianity in light of present-day persecution in China today.

Psalm 83:18 and Exodus 6:3 in the KJV.

We are told only four letters of God's name. It is referred to as "God's unpronounceable name". The four letters are YHWH, or YHVH. People attempt to make these for letters pronounceable by adding vowels, but this is just a guess, and is probably incorrect. Some say "Jehovah", and some say "Yahweh".

God told Moses that his name is "I Am". He is the "Eternally Existant One".

It´s all over the Bible.

In fact, Jesus made his Father´s name known.

John 17:26:

English Standard Version (©2001)

I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.”

"EARLY in the second century, after the last of the apostles had died, the falling away from the Christian faith foretold by Jesus and his followers began in earnest. Pagan philosophies and doctrines infiltrated the congregation; sects and divisions arose, and the original purity of faith was corrupted. And God's name ceased to be used.

Here is the comment of the translators of the American Standard Version of 1901: "[The translators] were brought to the unanimous conviction that a Jewish superstition, which regarded the Divine Name as too sacred to be uttered, ought no longer to dominate in the English or any other version of the Old Testament . . . This Memorial Name, explained in Ex. iii. 14, 15, and emphasized as such over and over in the original text of the Old Testament, designates God as the personal God, as the covenant God, the God of revelation, the Deliverer, the Friend of his people . . . This personal name, with its wealth of sacred associations, is now restored to the place in the sacred text to which it has an unquestionable claim."

If using the name of God is "entirely inappropriate," why does it appear almost 7,000 times in the original Hebrew text?

Similarly, in the preface to the original German Elberfelder Bibel we read: "Jehova. We have retained this name of the Covenant God of Israel because the reader has been accustomed to it for years."

Steven T. Byington, translator of The Bible in Living English, explains why he uses God's name: "The spelling and the pronunciation are not highly important. What is highly important is to keep it clear that this is a personal name. There are several texts that cannot be properly understood if we translate this name by a common noun like 'Lord,' or, much worse, by a substantivized adjective [for example, the Eternal]."

Translations using God´s name:

Psalm 83:18:

NW

That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah,

You alone are the Most High over all the earth.

King James Bible (Cambridge Ed.)

That men may know that thou, whose name alone is JEHOVAH, art the most high over all the earth.
