Question:
Atheists: Do you believe in "dark energy"?
Pastor Winthrop III

The Atheists keep ranting on about how there is
supposedly no evidence for God( despite the
logical and mathematical proofs presented to
them again and again).

They claim that, as God cannot be directly
tested and observed, he does not exist!

Does this also apply to dark energy, which
we know is there to explain the expansion
of the universe, but which cannot be directly
observed?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_energy

Likewise, God is known as the intelligent,
causal agency without which the universe
would have no real existence. We can't
put God under the microscope, but we have
to admit that he is a necessary factor.

Is it that you have a limited understanding
of reality? Do you only believe in what you
can perceive?

Dark energy is undeniably a potent force of man, nature and the universe. Its measure of capacity increases and decreases according to atmospheric volitions. An upsurge of mass energy changes percentages accordingly of dark energy to light energy.

God is a spiritual energy encompassing both dark and light. In the dark ages or the bronze age as it is referred to in this forum, humans sought God in a white bathrobe with a long beard. Their limited mental and intellectual capabilities were not refined sufficiently to consider God as a mass energy force.

Spirituality was the science of the great masters and well guarded, as is freemasonry in this age. God is a potent force of both enlighteneing light energy, and powerful dark energy. The two colourless energiesbecome the anti powers, loud and armed, in the stead of will and wisdom are as readily neutralised as they evoked.

The effects of dark energy can be perceived and measured.

God is a superstition. Next!

Wait, now your so desperate to find your god in anywhere or anything you thought you'd take a stab at dark energy?

Did you just search the internet for things that science is yet to fully explain so you could lable it god?

Well, the universe is 4% matter, 23% dark matter and 73% dark energy...why do you feel inclined to label the dark energy as god?

And even if this is really god, why do you assume its your god and its the same one who "inspired" your holy scriptures?

You do realize that dark energy means that eventually the galaxys will eventually fly away from each other at an exponetial rate thus causing the skies to go dark and for the planets to become cold...or did you miss that part?

I would love to hear the so-called "logical and mathematical proofs" of God...

And the idea of dark energy is based off of what we know of cosmology and physics...it's a hypothetical form of energy based off of calculations and scientific speculations of what it would be like...

It's not some deity that the only actual "proof" it has of its existence is a book thousands of years old that talks of talking animals, people parting seas, and the earth swallowing people...

Still, I like to keep an open mind, so...if you do have any "logical and mathematical proofs" of God, then please...message me...

I tried to think of logical answer to your question but the complete lack of structure or consistency made that impossible. You make unsubstantiated claims then reference them as proof of entirely unconnected statements.

Lets just take a brief look at your argument. Dark Matter is a hypothesis, this is not synonymous with a guess as you seem to believe. It is a suggested explanation for an observed phenomenon. The observation is that the expansion of the universe is accelerating, the hypothetical explanation is dark energy. I assume your alternative explanation is that god is the cause. So in competition with Dark Energy you have the god hypothesis.

An hypothesis must be testable and make useful prediction about the outcome of the test. The Dark Energy hypothesis has made predictions which have been tested. The results are increasingly in line with the hypothesis which you would realise if you had read any more than the first line of the wiki article you reference.

What predictions of future phenomena does you god hypothesis make and how can we test them?

Some said a similar thing a while back about how ancient people didn't know what oxygen was until it was discovered in recent times. But the effect of oxygen was always there whether it was understood or not. Dark matter and dark energy can be mathmatically postulated and shown to exist whether we can understand it or detect as yet. God cannot be postulated except in some ones mind. He does not exist otherwise and there is nothing to indicate a presence in any manner whether we can detect it or not.

do atheists keep ranting on?

I think not, they have far more important things to do and leave all the ranting to the religious groups and individuals who enjoy that kind of thing

Science and the study of space is a work in progress based on logic, maths, evidence to date. In the future, the scientists of today shall be looked upon in the same way as we look upon great philosophers from before our time. Science is an ever evolving study. The same way doctors 'practice' medicine today. It has a solid foundation of evidential fact.

The belief in a higher being is however none of these things. It is not a work in progress but a collection of assumptions and half truths based on a man who lived on this earth 2000 years ago. God may be found some day through science. But he will probably show his form as a highly complicated mathematical equation that we may never understand even though we will know it exists! lol.

A presently unfounded belief of God based on the non evolving writings of the past will never find God.

Believe whatever works for you, have have a good day ; )

Ha!......Everything's like this. All we have is effects and we introduce concepts to try to make sense of and predict the effects. The best example I've seen of this is when some physics dude was debunking some common phrases used by physics students. One of the phrases was "gravity is an invisible force". And he said "Has anyone actually seen a force? No. We see the motion and we introduce the concept of forces to account for it. A force is a concept, not an actual, physical thing"

It's a big jump to go from useful concept/law/theory/hypothesis to actual, physical reality, a leap of faith, if you will. Has the perfect model EVER been found, one that has been tested under and applies to all conditions, time scales, distance scales, speeds, masses etc?

I think this applies to ideas about God as well. Any statement I have heard about the nature of God, he's all seeing, he's all loving, he's all knowing, he's made in the image of man etc., are beautiful and useful concepts or ideas, but they just don't make sense all the time. Perhaps, like dark matter, they are useful ideas, but can never be known to actually exist or be absolutely true.

Dark matter does not absorb or emit light. Before astronomers inferred its presence only indirectly by measuring the effects of its gravity. You probably want "proof you can touch"? Nope. Can't provide it for ya. However, even though forensics can't prove a murder by observing the murder directly (it was done before they came to the scene), they can observe other kinds of evidence. Such as a murder weapon with fingerprints of the murderer... Same with dark matter, we can observe its "fingerprints" in the universe... We know how matter behaves and moves, we observe it, do experiments and write down the observations in mathematical form (for example, the theory of gravity). Well, matter in some places of the universe moves in such a way, that it seems as if there was some matter in between that we cannot see. They gave it the name "dark matter". If it's there or not, no one can know for sure, but you can't know for sure if you're really you, or just a brain in vat (check the source at the bottom).:) However, all the evidence points to this "dark matter" really existing. Anyways, a few years ago, by observing a massive collision between two large clusters of galaxies, astronomers have detected what they say could only be the signature of dark matter. "This proves in a simple and direct way that dark matter exists," - Maxim Markevitch of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts Read more in the other 3 sources linked below. Scientists calculate that dark matter makes up about 25 percent of the universe. By contrast, ordinary matter - the stuff that makes up stars, planets, and everything on Earth - makes up no more than about 5 percent of the universe. The other 70 percent of the universe, scientists believe, is made of dark energy, an even more elusive force that is pushing the universe apart at an ever increasing rate. Again, we got our laws of motion by observing the universe and doing experiments. Since there's at the moment no reason to think the laws are different in other parts of the universe, it looks as though there's some unknown energy pushing everything apart. It's the most plausible explanation at the moment, that's why we go with it. We don't need "to believe in it", we don't need faith for it, and when more information and new evidence come in, scientists will be GLAD to fix the theories accordingly and we, the atheists, will be happy and excited about it (if it turns out the theories about dark matter and dark energy were wrong, even that much more more). :) Unlike religious fundamentalists, for example, which when presented with new evidence, just close their eyes. :) Hope that helps.
