Question:
Christians, do you believe that the apocalypse is near?

I mean like the whole December 2012 Mayan calendar thing.

If you don't, then is this belief an example of heresy. Are Christians that believe in that heretics?

I do not believe that the end of the Mayan calendar means anything other than the Mayans will need to get a new calendar. Changing a calender does not mean the world is going to end. Nor do I believe the world is about to end from any other possible cause that I am aware of.

If and when the apocalypse happens, it will happen when God wills it to happen, and no amount of worrying or wondering about it will change that. I will live my life to the best of my ability every day as if there will be a tomorrow.

the definition of Heresy is: An opinion or doctrine that is contradictory to the accepted doctrine of faith, as defined by a religious group, sect or affiliation. So if your church has stated that believing in the Mayan calender hoax is heresy then for that denomination it is heresy. If the denomination has not made any official statement on it, as most have not, then they probably agree that brief in the Mayan Calender hoax is simply an act of idiocy that is best left ignored.

First of all, the Mayan calendar doesn't end in December, it starts over. Google the Mayan calendar and read it.

Second of all, when the mayans created the calendar, we didn't have leap years. So therefore, leap years weren't accounted for. If the mayan calendar had accurately predicted the end of the world, it would have happened about 7 months ago.

Third of all, I do believe that the rapture is near. Christians aren't supposed to look for just the signs that Jesus gave, but for when those things all start happening at the same time. And they are happening at the same time.

The end will come when it comes. Jesus said the end is near, but in terms relative to what time frame? Human history, the only history we know is hundreds of thousands of years long. In that context what is a soon end?

I don't believe it will be as soon as this year because the signs don't seem to fit. For example, there is no political leader trying to conquer the world and making progress towards that end.

Now would it be heresy to believe that the Mayans knew when the end of the world was? No, not heresy, just not compatible with scripture. The Bible says that only God the Father knows the precise time.

Interesting question.

I do not believe in the whole "December 2012 Mayan calendar thing." I'm not saying it definitely won't happen, but it certainly not something that worries me---Like Jesus said, only the Father knows.

I wouldn't say that Christians who believe in this "prediction" are heretics. St. Thomas Aquinas defined heresy as, 'a species of infidelity in men who, having professed the faith of Christ, corrupt its dogmas'. An example would be if a Christian were to deny the divinity of Christ.

Although, I may not hold much to the Mayan thing, I do tend to believe that there is a good chance that the end maybe near because of things I have noticed while reading about the Fatima Apparitions to three young shepherd children and the Divine Mercy Apparitions to one of my favorite Saints.

When the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the children at Fatima, she revealed quite a few things that have come to pass. Lucia, whom the Virgin Mary said would stay on the earth longer (the 2 others died young as the Blessed Mother foretold) became a nun and died as recently as 2005 at the age of 97. I took noticed the other night while I was reading about things she said that pertained to the Rosary and was somewhat struck by some of the first words when I read this (as for the rest of the words, not so much as I have experienced the truth of these words many times in my life, that it doesn't surprise me---in fact in makes me extremely thankful to God for it and to the Blessed Mother for her caring and powerful intercession):

"The Most Holy Virgin in these last times in which we live has given a new efficacy to the recitation of the Holy Rosary. She has given this efficacy to such an extent that there is no problem, no matter how difficult it is, whether temporal or above all, spiritual, in the personal life of each one of us, of our families, of the families of the world, or of the religious communities, or even of the life of peoples and nations that cannot be solved by the Rosary. There is no problem I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary."

Also, when Jesus appeared to St. Faustina, He not only told her (and ask her to spread devotion to) of His Divine Mercy, He also told her (talking about her country Poland): "From her will come forth the spark that will prepare the world for My final coming" (Diary, 1732). Many people think that Jesus might have meant Blessed Pope John-Paul II, the first Polish Pope. If this would be so, since he was our last Pope, he may have been the one that indeed played the role in preparing us for Jesus' final coming and we may indeed experience Jesus' final coming under the leadership of our present Pope, Benedict XVI. Again, only God knows. Mind you, when you do take the time to read about the Apparitions of Fatima and Divine Mercy they really do seem to be pointing to the fact that the "end" may very well be near.

I definitely believe that the apocalypse is near. No I do not believe that the world is going to end in 2012. I am a firm believer that only God knows when the world is going to end and that at his appointed time, he will tell his Son to come and get his children.

If you read Matthew 24 in the Bible, Jesus is telling his disciples the signs of the apocalypse/end of the world. And if you think about the things that have been happening lately on the news etc., most of it has come true just in the past few years.

Honestly, I would hate to be someone that ha to go through the Tribulation. That is going to be the most difficult time to live through.

I remember reading Revelations a long time ago. It seemed like a logical thing we are really doing to ourselves back then. I don't see much deceleration of that but it seems that I notice somewhat more like an acceleration of the processes of self destruction and if I let my imagination go I see it happening pretty much as it is written in Revelations. In other words the end as it is written in Revelations is becoming louder and louder as time goes on.

Don't know how it works out in the Mayan Calendar.

The Bible says nobody knows the day or hour. The Mayan calendar supposedly gives the day. You don't know if it's even being read the right way (there are a lot of thngs people assume about ancient civilizations but don't truly know). I gotta go with the Bible.

We won't know the day nor the hour.

But we'll know the 'season'.

And I don't think God needs help from the Mayans. Besides, - their 'clock' simply is inadequate to go further. There's no Mayan reference that the world will 'end' on 12/2012

I think its to the individual. Mayan is of different origin than Christian, their calendar is based on astronomy. Christianity is based on a man's struggles through life and the perspectives he found through living his individual path. The apocalypse is not so much fact as it is a metaphor, earth shall experience great tremors and the seas shall rise.. does not that happen everytime one cries

Not heretics, just stupid.

People have believed the apocalypse was "just around the corner" for the last 2000 years.

2012 is an hoax.

It's nothing less and nothing more.

The Mayans never predicted such a thing and nor did anybody else.

It was basically made up in order to take advantage out of gullible people. (no offense).

Darkness there and nothing more.

Here's another worthless response to another 2012 Mayan question that has been asked about 10,000 times already here.

These doomsday prophecies (there's been thousands of them throughout Christian history) ALWAYS fail. Yep, a 100% FAILURE rate.

The smart Christians never name a date ... because by not naming dates they can always say "well, I haven't been proved wrong". By not naming a day, date or hour these crazy Christians can continue FOREVER saying that their religious doomsday will happen (and thus nobody can "prove" them wrong) ..... how "convenient" for them.

No. Mayan's have nothing to do with Christianity.

...do I think it's near? Possibly.

Yes... but the exact time is unknown. God says do not get caught sleeping, for you will know when this time is near.

I'll say this though..... If the next popes name is 'Peter', you should be very concerned. Mark my words.

You may laugh now, but you will remember this. And it will happen. 'Peter'
