Question:
Is it disrepectful to say X-mas?
2007-07-01 11:27:13 UTC
TheX is a abbreviation of 'Xmas' for 'Christmas' is neither modern nor disrespectful. The notion that it is a new and vulgar representation of the word 'Christmas' seems to stem from the erroneous belief that the letter X is used to stand for the word 'Christ' because of its resemblance to a cross, or that the abbreviation was deliberately concocted "to take the 'Christ' out of Christmas." Actually, this usage is nearly as old as Christianity itself, and its origins lie in the fact that the first letter in the Greek word for 'Christ' is 'chi,' and the Greek letter 'chi' is represented by a symbol similar to the letter 'X' in the modern Roman alphabet. Hence 'Xmas' is indeed perfectly legitimate abbreviation for the word 'Christmas' (just as 'Xian' is also sometimes used as an abbreviation of the word 'Christian').

its not a Modern term for chritmas its been used since the begining of christianity, we might as well say using the word Jesus is disrespectful for Jesus was called Yeshua

Xpictoc( Christos) is Greek for Messiah. XP( Chi Rho) is an older symbol of Christ than the cross.

Many "moderns" use Xmas thinking that they are evicting Christ from the word and event. What an irony!

I've never heard it put the way you did and definitely gives me something to think about, but for me personally I feel it is leaving out Christ and is an insult not to completely write it out. And Jesus is not an abbreviation for Yeshua it is the english spelling of it. As a Christian I also use the words, yahweh and adonai and those are not abbreviations either.

My family has some seriously old "Xmas" greeting cards, so it's nothing new. As you point out, "Xmas" is an ancient Greek abbreviation. I'm not offended by it. People who complain about the abbreviation have clearly never studied its history.

I use "Xmess" because X is the algebraic symbol for the unknown, which certainly applies to claims about JC, and mess is what the whole thing has become.

I respect everyone's right to have a religion - but I have no reason to respect a religion that has forced itself on thousands and disrespects everyone but its followers.

I would rather say Christmas, because at times those who couldn't write used an x. In math, this is an unknown.
