Question:
How many of non-muslims have read Quran, at least 5 pages consecuetively?
2007-08-18 06:23:30 UTC
There are lots of mirclous verses in Quran if you read.
Like "the water of the two seas don't mix", referring to Strait of Gibraltar.
Like "all stars and the sun turns around in their orbits". This was understood hundreds of years after the Prophet Mohammed.
http://www.kuranikerim.com/english/36.html
Like "The Romans will lose the battle..." and they relly lost a big battle after a few years.
http://www.kuranikerim.com/english/30.html

Like "we have creted every living thing in pairs" and in 1400 years any opposition can't be found.

There are much more to this...

Why don't you read?

My brother read the whole thing....he's a muslim now, kinda freaked my mom out actually. But he's told me alot of interesting stuff from it. I would say certianly not a book to pre-judge..

I must admit that I've read chunks of it. I haven't read the whole thing though. I'm sorry to have to say that it's not a great piece of literature - despite what it says on the back cover of the Penguin Classics 4th revised edition of The Koran (translated by N.J. Dawood). Perhaps it's just lost something in the translation - who knows?

Anyway, I found the Bible a lot easier to read (NIV-style, rather than KJV-style, of course) than the Koran/Quran. It's just badly set out, for starters - but that's from a purely literary perspective. A little chronological order and logical progression wouldn't have gone astray, particularly from a book which claims to be a factual account - but I guess it's so deeply rooted in tradition that even translating it from Arabic into another language is akin to sacrilege - so, "God"-forbid it should be edited into a readable story.

You may have picked up, reading my answers to religious questions in YA, the fact that I am an Atheist and hold little but contempt for organised religions. So ... you may well ask ... what am I doing reading religious books? Various reasons actually, including but not limited to: curiosity, knowing-your-enemy, a slight masochism (I also read 'The Pilgrim's Progress' from cover to cover, even though it was very heavy-going, not to mention a tad boring) and a thirst for knowledge.

1. have you ever sailed through the straits of gibraltar. there is a bi*ch of a current from the altlantic, so it's wrong there.

3. the stars turn in their orbit, well yes they do, but doesn't the koran also say that the stars are inside the orbit of the moon and they are missiles to be aimed at demons.

2. seeing the koran was put together after the battles of dathin and yarmouk, that prophesy is a bit of a no brainer.

4. every living thing in pairs, what about bacteria, protozoa, they're living and they're not paired, no sexes, no male nor female.

i had to read the koran for my late antiquity course at college.

Science knowledge is not reliably found within the Qur'an.

According to Physicsworld.com:

"But in Muslim nations, religion plays a far bigger role in everyday life than it does in the West. Indeed, today Islam is actually holding back scientific progress by placing too great an emphasis on studying and interpreting the pages of the Koran, as the leading Iranian physicist Reza Mansouri points out (see "A way forward for Islamic science"). Those students in his country who do study science at university tend to learn a very narrow curriculum by rote, rather than being encouraged to think for themselves. Low investment in science – even in oil-rich Gulf states – and restrictions on freedom of expression compound the problem."

Yo.

I've read the Quran, as I've read most of the great religious classics - the Bible, the Bhagavad Gītā, the Dhammapada, the Talmud, the Tao Teh King, the Pistis Sophia, even the Book of Mormon. Why don't YOU try reading some of the others? Anybody who has exposed himself to several traditions equally is likely to take a more "democratic" approach to religion. Which is, of course, exactly why members of every religion are warned against doing so. Dogmatic religion needs insulation. Hence the vilification of "The Other."

As for the Quran itself, in order to really appreciate it, you have to learn Arabic. In its original language, the Quran is sublime poetry. In English translation, it's mere ditchwater.

To answer the first question... no I haven't read very much of the Quran.

To answer the last, because I already know that I am saved and don't really have all that much interest.

To respond to some of your other statements - "we have creted every living thing in pairs" - that is simply incorrect, there are many things that do not have any need to reproduce sexually and if there were only one of them left, they could replace themselves infinitely.

While I look at what you have written and find it quite legalistic, I recognise that there are many Christians that would say similarly ignorant things and I have no more respect for them.

Okay, I want to start by stating a couple facts. I am a Christian. The Quran mentions Jesus as well as the virgin Mary. It's goes along with the Bible. The only REAL difference is that Muslims believe that Mohammed was a profit that came after Jesus. The Quran says that Jesus was a powerful profit but not the Messiah. The stories are much like the ones in the Bible. We all have the right to believe whatever we want to. So don't go around talking about other religions when you have no idea what they're about or what they believe. Get educated!

yes, the whole book. When I was in Kuwait one of the translators tried to convert me. I always believe if your are going to completely disagree with something you should study it. After careful consideration I have determined the quran is nothing more than propaganda for muslim world domination.

How many have read a single verse of the Vedas or Upanishads? How many have read a single sentence in the Tao Te Cheng? How many know more than the dictionary definition of Buddhism or Shintoism? How many of you have more than a cursory knowledge of African and Native American religions? I feel no more of an urge to read the Quran or the Bible, in the same fashion as you have no urge to learn about any other religion that does not play prominently in Western Culture.
2007-08-18 08:02:52 UTC
I have read some of it, I admit I never studied it like I did the Christian's bible. Theologically speaking, it is more consistent and more poetic. But, sorry I don't believe in any religion or gods.

I think your question should be how many Muslim have read Quran, at least 5 pages consecutively... not non Muslim.. Nowadays Muslim less knowledge abt Quran then non Muslim. That's why more Muslim confused about Islam itself.

Ever wonder what has ghostly stories of ancestor's culture, custom and tradition of different community has got to do with other tribes of different community?

When everyone of different community has their own ghostly stories of ancestor's culture, custom and tradition of failures and horrors of the past were hiding it away from other community.

Look aound who were pulling down their pants in exposing the backsides of the misery of their own ancestor's culture, custom and tradition in embarassing their own community without being aware of the mess out there.

What Erin said. It copies a lot from the Bible. The one huge difference? Jesus rose from the dead and is alive. Mohammed is dead. Period. Or, I think they changed that story, yes?
2007-08-18 06:34:22 UTC
Er, there may be a few verses which are vague enough to be interpreted as resembling something which reflects truth, but that is largely down to coincidence, and I can assure you the majority of it is made up of contradictions and inaccuracies, along with all the other religious texts.

"They said ""God most gracious has begotten a son(Jesus)"", indeed they have put forth a thing most monstrous, as if the skies are ready to burst, the earth to split a sunder, the mountains to fall in utter ruin, that they have invoked a son for God most gracious"

I wonder how many Muslims ever read the Torah, or the Bible, or any of the books of the other great religions .

If you expect non-Muslims to be interersted in what the Koran says, don't you think it's important for you to study the other religions ?

Why don't you read ?
2007-08-18 06:38:20 UTC
I've read a few chunks of it, but I wasn't impressed. One day I do plan on reading the whole thing.

The verses you quote don't seem that special, sorry.

You don't have to read it to know that it says the same things as the Bible, Torah, Bagavad Vita (spelling!). Just treat others as you wish to be treated and you won't have any problems.

Qur'an is full of miracles that was scientifically proved long time after our dear prophet Mohamed( pbuh) died... ur examples are few among many, but a closed brain won't be able to understand such thing,

I have read quite a bit of the Koran (make up your mind on the spelling, please) and was NOT impressed.

Packed full of the same kind of nonsensical mish-mosh as with the Bible. Too many contradictions. Even worse with the arbitrary rules... such as being enjoined to put your right shoe on first.
