athithi means guest thithi means time ...as you cannot

tell as to when a guest is arriving so they are athithi

suppose you invite someone to your home or someone comes home you have to treat them with respect ..devo bhava means just like God ...

don't you worship God and treat Him with respect ?in the same way you have to treat even your father ,mother, teacher and guests with the same respect!

The Veda has accorded the place of highest prominence to the mother when it declared, Matru Devo Bhava, Pitru Devo Bhava, Acharya Devo Bhava, Atithi Devo Bhava (revere your mother, father, preceptor and guest as God). This is not jus for advertising these real facts of hinduism which can never be hided.

It is the verse in the Taittiriya Upanishad that says "Matru devo bhava, Pitru devo bhava, Acharya devo bhava, Atithi devo bhava". Means One should worship Mother, Father, Teacher and Guests as God.

Tithi in Sanskrit means a date. In ancient time when means of communication were limited and it was not possible to anticipate date of arrival of guest the word "Atithi" was coined to depict a visiting person who had no fixed date of arrival or departure. "Devo" means God and Bhav means Be/Is, literally meaning "Guest is God"

Athithi may be ur friend or even a poor man or even a beggar .Who ever comes to ur house pay respect and give the food u eat...because more than them nothing is important...

Friend,

You know the answer. It is nice to post such questions for the benefit of beginners .Good.

Maatru Devo Bhava....Mother is none other than GOD.Why? She has borne for 9 months , the child in her womb, and taken so many precautions to see that the child in the womb is all right. .She worships so many deities for safe arrival of a noble child.SHE RISKS HER LIFE DURING DELIVERY TIME AND HAPPILY GIVES BIRTH TO HER CHILD.

SO WHAT CAN YOU CALL SUCH A NOBLE , UNSELFISH KIND PERSON EXCEPT GOD?

THERE IS A SAYING GOD CAN NOT BE EVERY WHERE, SO HE MADE MOTHERS.

So Maatru devo bhava...take her blessings by touching her feet every day.you will be blessed.

Pitru Devo Bhava.....Father (Pithru) is the Main element and his Tejas becomes child in the Kshetra,Place, mother`s womb. After birth Parents take care of the child. The father is responsible for his or her (child`s) education and conduct and character. He attends on the child forgetting all his other things. SO PITHRU DEVO BHAVA.

Next ACHAARYA DEVO BHAVA. the Parents have given a physical body and father has given some education that is required for earning livelihood, some employment.

But that is not Enough for children in sanatana Dharma.

The children Need Divine Knowledge , the knowledge by which they can understand all and try to Realize God in the Guidance of Ahaarya.None other can give this Gnaanam.so HE IS GOD HIMSELF IN FLESH AND BLOOD.

So Our Hindu sampradaaya gave such a place , an equal seat like GOD to Achaarya

so AAcharya gives Gnaanam. So HE IS GOD HIM SELF...Hence Aachaarya Devo Bhava. No one can return the debt of Guru or Aachaarya.

Athithi is a person that may visit any home without any relevence to thithi (Time).

He may be God in disguise, to test you.

By Coming to our home , the athithi gives us a CHANCE TO SERVE HIM AND SO WE ARE BLESSED.

We serve him with full reverenace and pay Namaskaarams and take aseervaadams.we are indebted to Him.Note that guest is never indebted to Gruhastu.

That is our Sanatana sampradaaya.

good qustion, God bless you.

On seeing the question from a great one who is asking a real meaning to 1) mathru, 2) pithru

3) Acharya, and 4) Athithi means, he needs an explanation for '' Athithi '' which occupies the place of God. i am sure, he did not expect a '' dictionary '' meaning or a meaning to '' Athithi '', since a questioner have sincerely, honestly know the details.

The meaning to '' Athithi '' is told only as a '' guest ''. In my home, every day relations are coming, friends are coming and many known people are coming. who is the '' Athithi '' among the visitors.

If we reside in a remote village, we take the avatar of '' Athithi '', but when we reside in an important city, and in an important place having all facilities to reach easily the said known, friends, relations are on reach us. can we title them as '' Athithi '' ?

so, i guess that the great saying ''Athithi'' should have a special status. if then what it should be ? The said '' Athithi '' should be above all such relations, friends, known etc., how can one identify the said '' Athithi '' among the visitors is the question.

The indian tourism development corporation cleanly identifies the '' athithis '' and say ''devo bhava'' towards them. If so, what is then for this..''..Indians may flatter themselves into believing they are generous hosts but they actually aren’t. The much-touted principle of Athithi devo bhava applies only to domestic tourists, not to eccentric foreigners. Otherwise, Japanese tourists would not have complained of being harassed by a guide at the Sun Temple in Konark. Otherwise non-resident Indians would not have felt like running away from the clutches of greedy pujaris at Kalighat in Kolkata.

“Tourism is about opening up your own culture with due tolerance and utmost respect for the culture of the visitors. Indians are too immersed in their medieval ethos to understand the worldwide cultural crosscurrents of the 21st century. There’s an old Chinese adage that says a closed mind is like a closed book, just a block of wood. We are indeed the wooden people.”

A knowledgeable and learned one putting a question and asking us the meaning means that he knows fully well, and just he wish to distribute the knowledge among us and on understanding the question, i say this must be the meaning which i know with my level of knowledge.

i am taking your time in explaining the meaning to the '' Athithi Devo bhava ''. just translating the sanskrit word will not yield good results and will not attract the asker. The answer should satisfy the readers as well as should give happy to the questioner. Now going to the meaning ''Athithi Devo Bhava '' ...

It is said by Sage Sukha that one who gets to hear this story will be immensely blessed with Vedic knowledge and intelligence. When we acquire knowledge, our ego and pride immediately shoots up. So in order to teach humility, Sage Sukha narrated the story of Ambarisha.

Ambarisha Mahabhaga: sapthadweepavathim mahim |

Avyyayam cha shiyam labdva vibhavam chathulam bhuvi||

Menethi durlabham pumsam sarvam thath swapnasamsthutham |

Vidhwan vibhavanirvanam thamo vishathi yath puman ||

Ambarisha had inherited the world and yet he did not attach any pride in him for this ownership. He considered it as a clod of earth and he fixed his mind exclusively on the lotus feet of the Lord. But, now what is happening ? We spend million dollars to buy an apartment in the fiftieth or sixtieth floor. When we jump a little hard our downstairs neighbor would bicker on us. We don’t have the same freedom to hit a nail on the floors. We don’t have any ownership on the walls and the roof but paid a million dollar for the air enclosing the apartment.

Ambarisha was forever in the divine communion with the Lord. He didn’t spend much time in ruling his kingdom. His mind was forever set to the lotus feet of Lord Sri Krishna. He would eat only the Prasad [food that was offered] to the Lord. He would only wish to divine names and glories of the Lord and if he wanted to smell some good fragrance, he would take some tulsi leaves that were offered to the holy feet of the Lord.

Ambarisha once decided to perform ekadasi fasting [vratha/upavasa] for a year. That fast ended on the Uttana ekadasi day in the month of karthikai. Ambarisha went to Madhuvana forest in Brindavan. Madhuvana is a very popular place amongst the bhagavathas as Lord Dhruva had performed penance in that forest.

On the day of Uttana Dwadasi, the culminating day for his fast, he had invited everyone for a grand feast. The Ekadasi Vratha bears fruit only if an (guest) athithi is invited home and is well-fed and offer the pranams and make him highly contended and then we consume food before the end of Dwadasi. Why is a guest called athithi? The term ‘thithi’, refers to a day [to be specific, it refers to the Dwadasi day]. It is on this day that we should visit other people’s homes. But a person who doesn’t mind whether it is a ‘Thithi’ or not, is indeed an

Actually it means one must treat your mother, father, guru and guest as you would God. This is based on the concept in the Vedas that the best way to serve God is by serving your fellowman. It does not mean worship them, it means serve them. Serving others is much more important than worshiping them. Worshiping is usually targeted at Gods as they are a way to develop special character traits ourselves and tune into the Divine Intelligence that surrounds us all. But by serving those around you, you are truly serving God and this is the summary of the Vedas.

Edit: It is also important to note that saying that a mother or father is the equivalent of God is a very theoretical position that cannot always be backed up by reality. Often parents are very abusive to their children in the worst ways imaginable and do not in any way take the place of God on earth. Similarly some gurus are false gurus and some guests have evil intentions. So Sanathana does not say that these 4 groups are the equivalent of God but that we should treat them with the kind of respect and service we would God. If one person is violated by any of these 4, they can still turn to God who is the Ultimate and Final refuge. God has no equal -- not even in one's family as the Mahabrattha shows. So treat others well and serve them for in the service of others you are serving God. But do not think they are God for they are not. God is one without equal and God is within us all.

I'm not a highly learned scholar, but it's as simple as that. I have had the opportunity to talk with people who are well versed in the subject although I am certainly not as elevated as they are. When we live expecting results, we are disappointed if we don't get the results we want. If we do get the results we want, the sense of satisfaction only lasts for a short time and then we go on to expecting results from the next thing. It's a waste of time to live in expectation of results, and we are much happier if he can do without the expectation. If I don't get my raise or promotion that I expected I'm disappointed. If I get it, I'm pleased for a little while but the "pay off" is never as good as I anticipate it to be. It's easy for me to understand, but it's very difficult to learn to apply. In Western society (or just about anywhere else) we are programmed to expect results.

Friend, to say the meaning for Hinduism, at first, it was not the name of our religion. First, THERE WAS NO NAME FOR OUR RELIGION AT ALL. because, only if there are 2 or more groups, we can assign different names to each to acknowledge them.

But, our sanathana dharma is the oldest, and no one can predict it's introduction. On the very early times, there were no other castes or practices at all. only the followers of our vedhas, shaastras and our sanathana dharma. Then after the introduction of christianity after christ, islam after nabi, jain after mahavir, etc,.. etc,.., then foreigners visited our land and as it was on the banks of sindhu river, they thought of calling it as sindhia, then it came as INDIA, and the people who live in India are HINDUS, and thus the name HINDUISM.

It looks like it is a social awareness slogan from the India Ministry of Tourism. Guests as God, it means. Hospitality for visitors to your house.
