Question:
Do God's anti-theist critics err in anthropomorphizing God rather than recognizing him as our creator?

If God were our peer and fellow creature, it would make sense to attack him as a murderer for, say, obliterating Sodom and Gomorrah. However, if God invented and manufactured humans, it makes sense that he might want to apply quality control standards to throw out a bad batch. Is it a mischaracterization of God as a peer that leads atheists to criticize their manufacturer?

The irony of it is that in order for them to call the destruction or rather punishment of Sodom and Gemmorrah as being bad they would have to first define what is good and what is bad. And without any absolute standard to measure with they have nothing to base their moral assertions on. In order for an absolute standard of goodness to exist there has to be an absolute good which we call God. Because atheists do not want an absolute standard of goodness they deny God, which leads to moral relativism.

The simple fact is that Sodom and Gemmorrah sinned greatly against God and they were punished greatly for it. It doesn't really matter what Joe Blow down the street thinks about it. What matters is what God thinks since He is the only one who actually creates truth. We can only discover it.

To the atheist: if true reality is God then his will is reality and anything else is living in fantasy.

If you make ten kids and two of them start having anal sex and being disrespectful should it be okay for you to take them out back and kill them? No, you would go to jail. The bible describes the relationship between the Abrahamic God and humans as a father and children. God is referred to by Christians as 'the Father'. Perhaps if the Bible referred to humans as 'manufactured goods' or anything like it this argument would hold water.

P.S.God's anti-theist critics don't believe he exists, mate.

-edit- a

I don't rail against God in YA. I fully believe that both Voldemort and Sauron are tyrants and would gladly and loudly say this anywhere YA or otherwise. I think Harry Potter and Aragorn are both heroes. I don't have to believe in any of these FICTIONAL characters to use describing words on them and form an opinion based on the character the AUTHOR gave them. The idea that you have to believe something actually exists to make judgements upon is silly. Do you not read fiction?

Even though God progressed to where he is, that does not diminish his status as deity. He did organize this world and everything on it. Does the vase tell the potter who created it what to do? God made us and the rules we live by. When there can be no more progress on earth for those who have embraced evil, then it is time to pull the plug and return them to a spirit existence where they can remember clearly their bad choices as opposed to what God taught them.

Paul taught that we had fathers of our flesh that admonished us and we obeyed them. Ought we not to be subject to the father of spirits and live? We subjugate our will to that of the Father and trust His wisdom in all things. He has a purpose for allowing some to be destroyed in the flesh that their spirits might continue to progress.

The anthropological references to God are simply a device to let humans appreciate some of the invisible characteristics and qualities of God. For example the prophet Daniel did not really see God. Rather, God impressed vivid images upon his mind. Then, in describing what he saw, Daniel used figures of speech, including anthropomorphisms—the attributing of human characteristics to God. Such word pictures help to make God comprehensible to us and are not to be taken literally.

To me, it says something about the people that wrote the bible that they gave this god, these characteristics. Some myths say their gods, likes the tribe to enjoy themselves and hear the sound of singing or laughter.

Why throw out a bad batch, wouldn't a repair be possible.

Hell has 2 definitions. One is the definition as given by making use of catholicism. it fairly is a fiery place of torment, to be feared. the different definition comes from the Bible. that's the grave .....6 ft under. No hearth. No torment. Non-life incredibly. i will pass with the Bible's definition.

No, we don't err. When you attribute things like intelligence/power/benevolence to your personal creator God, *YOU'RE* anthropomorphizing him. We're just taking your belief system, and deconstructing it.

In any event, would you like to make the argument that it's okay for parents to apply quality control standards to throw out 'bad batches' of their own children? I suspect you don't, and I also suspect you'll attempt to argue that your God is somehow different, and even further anthropomorphize him in his "defense."

Face it. Your belief system is irreconcilable with reality, and no amount of mental gymnastics will save you from the inconsistent "logic" of it.

There is no evidence that any of the gods that mankind has made up has ever existed.
