Is it a good thing that U.S. law is not based on the Bible?

If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay her father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the young woman, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives. Deuteronomy 22:28-29

It would seem to me that Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michele Knight would think it's a good thing that U.S. law is not based on the Bible.

To answer you question, yes it is a good thing. There are too many hateful passages in the bible for it to be respected as a guide to how people should be treated. Sure, there are some good parts but there are also a lot of bad parts.

Also, this Simple Jack character is doing an evasive play. Instead of addressing that such a verse exists in the bible he attacks how you came about it. See what he is doing there. He is shifting your argument into defending how you came about this information rather than the implications of the information. That is a high school debate ploy.

Once again the cherry picking and misreading the Bible. Show where that is RAPE? That is not rape at all. IF you would READ the Bible you would see in verse 25 what happens if a man rapes a woman. A man that raped a woman was killed. and nothing happen to the woman.

Deuteronomy 22:28-29 That is talking about a young couple in love who go off having premarital sex.

Edit: I do not know what Bible you used it is a very poor translation to be sure. HERE is what is REALLY says:...

Deuteronomy 22:28 “If a man find a damsel who is a virgin who is not betrothed, and lay hold on her and lie with her, and they be found,

29 then the man that lay with her shall give unto the damsel’s father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall be his wife; because he hath humbled her, he may not put her away all his days.

Also notice he can not divorce her.

Here in 22:25 “But if a man find a betrothed damsel in the field, and the man force her and lie with her, then the man only that lay with her shall die." That is what happens to RAPISTS

Same old, tired, false claim over and over.

That verse is not talking about rape. Look at the original language and learn something before you copy & paste from the first skeptic web site you find. http://answering-islam.org/Shamoun/ot_and_rape.htm

"@Simple Jack: I copied those verses from a Bible web site, not a skeptic web site."

Mhm, sure. I'm totally convinced you got this idea just by stumbling upon it in the Bible all by yourself.

Doesn't matter because various churches control all media and other channels of information much more than you think. You only get to hear what is conducive to these churches' evil empire. Islam is not the greatest evil on earth. It is roman Catholicism. If you don't know about your own so-called religion them may God have some mercy on you to show you truth.

God is not a man, never was. Mary chose to be the mother of God's only begotten son. It was not rape.......and you call Christians judgmental. U.S. law isn't based on Bible huh? Have you read the first amendment to the U.S. Constitution? Freedom of Religion #1. The next time you look at your money check out the "in God we trust" logo.

Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them (Lev.24:10-16)? Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws (Lev. 20:14)?

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging. Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

PS. "I know that Deuteronomy 22:28-29 tells me that if I rape a girl, I have to pay her daddy 50 silver sheckles and marry her, and I REALLY like this girl that won't talk to me. I was thinking about raping her so I could marry her. How much do you think 50 silver sheckles would be in current US Dollars?"

It is a GREAT thing that no modern nation bases it's laws on the delusions of the bible.

I can't imagine the horror those three women went through.

I hope they are given the time they need to recover from their ordeal.

good thing we are not under those laws anymore. Why you can't use a book written for an ancient society in todays society.
