Is it impossible for the theory of evolution and Christianity to coexist?

If there was evolution, then Adam and Eve would not have existed - for God created Adam and Eve. Therefore, since Eve didn't exist, than no-one would have been tempted to eat the fruit and sin would not be on the earth. Since there would be no sin, then there is no need for salvation, therefore, no Christianity, for Jesus could not have died for our sins to be forgiven because there would be no original sin in the first place.

This is an interesting opinion I heard on this matter by a close family member and was wondering what other Christians feel about this matter. Also if you have any other arguments for or against why you think its possible for evolution (at least of humans) and Christianity to coexist.

In the short-term, sure. Some Christians will rationalize it and say that it's how god did his creation, and ponder questions like "what is a day to god? Why--one of GOD's days could be thousands of years" and so on.



But in the end, scientific discovery is corrosive to superstitious beliefs. Fundies realize this, which is why they are so anti-science. But moderates actually have a delusion that fundies do not--the delusion that science and religion can peacefully coexist, or that they can be reconciled. They cannot. Religion makes far too many truth claims that are anti-scientific and demonstrably false. Claiming them as symbolic can only take you so far. Eventually, when the Bible is full of parable, metaphor, allegory, poetry, saga, etc., you reach the point where the whole thing can be summed up as "fiction".



At one time, I'm sure it was easy, in fact hard not to, believe in supernatural explanations for everything we experience yet do not understand. We didn't know what germs were, or atoms. We didn't know that the Earth was a sphere, or that the sun went around the Earth, or that the stars were other suns, but very far away. The sun was believed to be a god, or the chariot of the sun god. What other explanation was there? Religion has always been, to a great extent, the explanation for all that we do not understand. But now we have a better way of understanding the universe we live in. It's better because it relies on data that is TESTED, not demanded to be exempt from questioning.



Evolution is just one part of the scientific understanding that is ever so slowly destroying religion. What will happen when we understand exactly how life began? And determine it was a natural process? Or how about if we determine what touched off the Big Bang? And we find that was a natural process also? What last little pocket of ignorance will remain for humanity to attribute to a god? God will be unemployed. At this point, religion's decline will accelerate.

Evolution is hardly the only problem with the Adam and Eve story. For instance if there was no such thing as sin ( disobedience of God ) before Eve ate the apple how did SATAN exist slithering around the garden in snake form? Why would God invite his arch foe to slither around his supposed sinless paradise?



Also how could Eve decide to disobey God and eat the apple in the first place? If the concept of disobeying God didn't exist she obviously wouldn't have done it.



Also why create a forbidden fruit in the first place? It was entirely uneeded and an obvious attempt to set Adam and Eve up to fail.

Most Christians accept the Big Bang, Evolution, and Adam and Eve.



The account of the Creation in Genesis uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man. Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents.



After God created the Universe through the Big Bang and the diversity of Life with Evolution, the scenario might have happened like this. A manlike being is slowly evolving. At some point God gives these beings a soul. They become human beings with free will and responsibility in the image and likeness of God.



These human beings lived in complete “original” holiness, in perfect loving relationships with God and each other. They loved God with all their heart, with all their soul, and with all their mind. They loved their neighbors as much as they loved themselves.



Then the first human beings chose to break off this relationship with God, choosing to be selfish instead of loving. This was the Original Sin.



Consequently, they lost the grace of original holiness and sin became universally present in the world.



Besides the personal sin of the first human beings, original sin describes the fallen state of human nature, which affects every person born into the world, and from which Christ, the "new Adam," came to redeem us.

Speaking of God's works of creation, the Bible says that the "works were finished from the foundation of the world." Hebrews 4:3. There are to be no more works of creation; species cannot become other species.



Evolution cannot coexist with Christianity. The Bible says that there was no other human before Adam; Adam came from God (he was created by God). Luke 3:38.

The bible is a SPIRITUAL BOOK. nobody can take all the stories in it literally. I don't believe Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. I believe it's allegory for human consciousness.

If you take much of the early OT as myth based on man's attempt to understand his origin in a time when science was not knows (excluding geometry and building of pyramids, etc) then OT is part myth, part history of the Jewish people......and others and the basic teaching of the religion. The forbidden fruit, beginning of evil are found throughout cultures around the world. Our need to know who we are and where we come from in universal..........today we use more science, but before it was historical recollection, tales, myths. Perhaps today we are doing the same thing with our "science" and new scientists will say, "What simpletons to have believed in that type of evolution."

Plenty of Christians do not think that the creation myth or the story of Adam & Eve is historical - rather they believe that Jesus died for the sins of mankind, which include all of the myriad of sins that humans have committed throughout time. The concept of Original Sin is not necessary for the concept of Salvation. Though I agree that the story makes the most sense as a narrative in it s original literal form, all natural sciences show that we do not have a common ancestry with two humans 6,000 years ago.
