Question:
Why do we blame the Jewish people for the crucifixion of Jesus?
2009-07-17 17:22:01 UTC
I come in defense of the Jewish people. Now granted, I am cognizant that the people of Israel are not entirely innocent. They have done terrible things, for example, to the Palestinians. That is not to be condoned. There is not any justification for it.

But us Americans- and especially those of us whom are Christians- should support Israel.

Why do we focus so much in our society on playing the blame game? Why do we ask things like this:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090717170653AATbTzQ

Why do we require a scapegoat? Is it because we want to understand why things happen?

In my honest opinion- and yours may vary- it is not the Jewish people who crucified Jesus.

First of all, Jesus was not killed. He laid down his own life as a sacrifice to atone for the sins of all humankind. He did this of his own volition and accord. He chose to die a horrible death so that people could be saved from sin and death. I, for one, am deeply and profoundly grateful for Jesus' sacrifice. His demise was tragic, and very brutal. But there is no one race nor person who is to blame for Jesus' death. He chose to give his life. He may have even had the power to save himself, even as he was hanging on the cross. Certainly, God had the power to save Jesus. But if he had saved Jesus, the rest of us would all be doomed.

In my view, there isn't anyone to blame for Jesus' death but ourselves. We choose to sin, and we caused Jesus to die. It is not the fault of the Jews.

Let's examine your claims one by one.

"First of all, Jesus was not killed. He laid down his own life as a sacrifice to atone for the sins of all humankind. He did this of his own volition and accord. He chose to die a horrible death so that people could be saved from sin and death."

Since Jesus was brutally tortured to death by scourging and crucifixion, it is not realistic to say Jesus was not killed. It is true that he didn't resist arrest and execution. However, the fact remains that he was unjustly arrested and unjustly executed. He was killed.

"But there is no one race nor person who is to blame for Jesus' death. He chose to give his life."

It is true that a race did not kill Jesus; his murderers were not distinguishable by race from the Christians. However, there were persons responsible for Jesus' death: The Romans who carried out an unjust execution; Judas who betrayed Jesus for money; and most of all the Sanhedrin council, who clearly engineered Jesus' arrest and murder.

"In my view, there isn't anyone to blame for Jesus' death but ourselves. We choose to sin, and we caused Jesus to die."

My sins could not have caused Jesus to be killed, because he was killed nearly 2000 years before I was born. That is not a credible historical argument.

Two facts remain in summation. 1) Jesus was brutally murdered at the instigation of the Jewish ruling council, through the betrayal of Judas, and through the injustice of the Romans.

2) Jesus submitted to torture and death in order to protect his integrity as a prophet and to finally attest to the complete truth of his message, including his prophecy of resurrection from the dead.

I don't know if this is true, but this is how it was explained to me.

The Roman Empire was very intolerant of religions that were too different from their own. Most places they conquered had polytheism, like their own, and they could sneak their own gods into the local pantheon. The Egyptians, for instance, had a sun god, a god of life and death, a ruler of the underworld, etc., and the Romans simply assumed they were the same as their own gods, only with different names.

Judaism was really unique among Roman occupations. But it was an ancient religion even then, and the Jews kept to themselves and didn't proselytize, so the Romans left them alone. In fact young Jewish men were excused from military service, which was mandatory throughout the rest of the empire, because they insisted on taking off one day in seven, which made them not good soldiers.

But when Christianity came along, the Romans didn't tolerate it so well. Christianity was new, and what good could a -new- religion be? Also Christians traveled throughout the empire building churches and recruiting new members, and the Romans wouldn't have that. So they began persecuting Christians.

The Christians reacted by insisting that the Jews had lost God's covenant, and that they were the 'new Jews'. The Jews, they said, had murdered their own Messiah. So God no longer favored them, now he favored the Christians.

Very early Christian writings seem to bear this out. The Epistle of Barnabas, and the writings of Justin Martyr, from the 1st century BC, make these points and bash the Jews for their faithlessness.

In another three centuries, Christianity spread through the empire and became the official religion of the Roman Empire, while the Jews were scattered in the diaspora and never increased that much in number. So in 'late antiquity' and into the Middle Ages, Jews were seen as 'the other', not to be trusted, not quite human. 8^) For the next 1500 years, Jews were not citizens of any country. The lived in their own communities, ate different food, wore different clothes, spoke a different language.

When Martin Luther reformed Christianity, he seemed to think he had eliminated any reason Jews might have for not believing in Jesus. He met with local Jewish leaders and offered them membership in his new church. And when they turned him down, he was outraged, and he wrote some very nasty things about the Jews. Many of these ideas showed up a few hundred years later, in the Germany of the Third Reich.

Why so much emphasis these days on Jesus' death? Sure, He chose to lay His Life down for us all, yet, why is it never mentioned that by His Own Power, He took His Life back up again, and Is the first to ascend to from where He came. The Saving factor Is that He ROSE! THAT is where He defeated death, Hades (the grave), and Satan! THAT is where we have passed from death unto Life. God bless everyone!

Never mind all that. I'm not blaming present day Jews for anything, they are no better or worse than other people. Now about Jesus. They instigated and agitated until Pilate allowed Jesus to be crucified. Pilate being the Govenor of Judea at the time was responsible for keeping order and keeping the Jews mollified and himself out of trouble with Caesar. And he was killed. You think he nailed himself to the cross?

Its user-friendly- who chaired the Council of Nicea the place the 'New" testomony replaced into canonized? Constantine- a Roman Emperor finding for a gadget to apply to pacify his empire- and seeing in Christianity that gadget. purely ingredient- if it blamed the Romans for the dying of their God- no Roman replaced into going to settle for it, so the Jews have been a attainable scapegoat- plus it have been given rid of that embarrassing question; "If Jesus replaced into the Messiah and King of the Jews, why did maximum people of Jews reject him?" So how do all of us be attentive to that the account of Jews killing Jesus is nonsense? analyzing the Gospel account shows it for what it somewhat is. The so called trial given interior the NT tale is the thoroughly opposite of the Jewish regulation a million) It happens at night- all trials have been held in the process the day 2) It happens in a private domicile- all trials in Jerusalem have been held interior the courtroom of the Sanhedrin interior the Temple courtyard 3) there have been very few people contemporary - there could be a minimum of 21 judges in a capital case- in Jerusalem the excellent Sanhedrin of 70 judges heard capital circumstances. 4) If a courtroom won't be able to discover someone accountable, they're forbidden to hand them over to secular government - the "courtroom" interior the NT does no longer locate Jesus accountable, and then palms him over. So 4 serious violations of the halacha (Jewish regulation)- which on condition that they have been in a capital case skill the dying sentence for those committing the violations- however the NT retains slandering the Pharisees and their strict adherence to the regulation! On good of that- you have a huge undertaking, a Roman governor who's later bumped off for severe cruelty! (to procure to ask your self- and this from a people who watched people struggling with to dying, getting eaten alive etc for exciting!) And yet a conquered, powerless team of people is in a roundabout way meant to have the skill to get him to obey them? What does make experience is that if this entire ridiculous state of affairs is inserted in to get rid of the blame from the Romans whilst the early Christians have been attempting to transform them and mandatory a scapegoat! Who extra effective than the people who had rejected their new God - to removes the blame from the people they're attempting to transform at the same time as giving an excuse why maximum people of them have rejected him!

You Christians can't have it both ways. If Jesus was supposed to die for your sins, then the Jews were just fulfilling prophecy. And yet you blame them for that? How hypocritical of you. If the Jews are to blame for killing him, then he didn't sacrifice his life for all of you. Make up your minds.

Really we would have to blame our selves for it also, Jesus died for all of us to carry our sins, As a sinful man he died for me also, I put him to death for saving me. The who ever they want to blame the were just a SYSTEM to get the job done.

and they cheered and jeered him untill his death and then went on to murder evey other christian they could get their hands on
