I'm making my own smudge stick to banish the negative and still energy in my home. I'm using a mixture of sage, cloves, cinnamon, and rosemary. What should I use for the wrapping that won't smell? I don't have wrapping paper. All I have is newspaper, wax paper, and regular printing paper. Would burning them wrapped in a dead dried leaf work? What do you suggest?

I make my own and i only use sage, i dont use any paper.

Here is what i do.

(1) bundle herb together.

(2) Place on a sushi mat or sheet of thick paper and roll out like sushi.

Do this until the herb is slightly bruised and stays together slightly.

(3)Starting at the base of your stick using twine, tie onto the end and then criss cross the twine all the way to the tip of your stick and then back down again and tie off.

(4) Hang in sunlight to dry out completely.

Remember when you use your stick to hold it over a plate as bits will drop everywhere and cause fire danger.

Also be careful because some herbs can trigger powerful reactions and breathing difficulties for some people.

Hope this helps.

Oh and remember to use white sage not the cullinary one....

I don't think I've ever seen a smudge stick wrapped in paper. I use a cord to bind mine together. I guess you could use rolling papers to make small sticks, they wouldn't smell as bad and the make hemp papers so at least it would be natural.

If you are using loose herbs as I have in the past, get a piece of charcoal from a tobacco shop (used for hookah smoking) or a herb shop. They're about the size of a half-dollar and self lighting, once its hot and the edges are tuning grey place small amounts of the herb on top of it (keeping in mind air flow for good smoke). Don't forget safety, use a censor or dish with sand in it to keep the charcoal in one place and from getting the dish too hot to handle. I had a shell that I used the first time but forgot the sand, thus cracking the shell. If the container is large enough, you can carry your herb mixture with you through the house as you need to add to the charcoal, use a small spoon or athame to add the mixture.

Next time get sage and other herbs in stick form so you can bind them together; I buy a smudge stick, take it apart, add what I want, then rebind it.

Newspaper, wax paper, and regular printing paper ALL burn with a horrible smell, as does wrapping paper.

You're better off not trying to make a smudge stick at all if you're using loose herbs. Instead, get an incense charcoal from either an occult supply shop or a Catholic supply shop and burn the herbs on the charcoal in a dish full of sand, which can easily be carried around. (Do NOT use an ordinary barbecue charcoal briquette -- they emit toxic fumes when burned in enclosed spaces.)

Some resources for you, with much practical advice are below, on how to gather materials, what materials work well, how to make bundles, and also cautions regarding how smudge sticks can be smoldering or sparking hazards. Wraps are usually some natural fiber twine, after herbs are properly dried in newspaper (which is NOT part of the package usually).

If you are serious - take time to learn how to do it safely. Some of these books are great. and many of the best Craft shops have an herbalist who could TEACH you.

Using toothpicks or the wooden bases of kitchen matches as splints and binding it with lengths of cotton thread tied at intervals along the length works fairly well. Once it's going the flame has to be extinguished so's to allow smouldering, rather than burning.

And, as another answered, you need to hold it over a plate, or pan to keep from burning holes in clothing, rugs, etc.

which say newspaper is fine.

usually you would just bind up the stems but if you have to roll it in something I would say leaves would be better than any type of paper

the only game God performs each now and then, as he stands in front of the reflect, is ask himself "am I actual, do I exist" and since the respond is often the comparable, he seems on the reflect, and there is no person there. these days he has been taking part in this game often.
