If you're a Christian please quote from the Bible and provide verses that specifically say 'hell' in them.

Thanks.

Hell is a Germanic word.

Jewish people - many of them do not beleive in hell.

The concept of hell heaven angels and the devil comes from Zorastrian religion . So- that's where you start study Zorastrian religion first and work your way up to judaism then roman christianity and finally - protestantism.

Oh - Islam's hell is in there too and the Buddists have a hell also. I think Tibetan Buddists might have gotten the idea from the Muslims when they came. Utne reader did a nice article on hell some years back.

Gehenna is a word used by Muslims to mean hell. Originally gehenna was a hill outside Jerusalem where human sacrifices were performed. Jews reject this outright as pagan abomination.

Later the Roman Catholics used the term to denote Judicial torture of their inquisition and the burning of heretics (mostly protestants and scientists and thinkers and "witches".)

I personally do not beleive there ever were any "witches". I think they burned incest victims, rape victims, victims of molestations, senile , mentally ill people and anyone else whose land they wanted to steal.

Ancient Rome was so sadistic it took 400 years to get the bloodlust out of that culture once the emperor declared christianity the state religion. ( See Folkways by Sumner) Romans practiced human sacrifice up to about 3-4 BC. The idea of drinking blood was not new to them. Babylonians also did it for a very long time . So the Jews knowing this never accepted the concept of hell due to its intimate link to human sacrifice in actual history of religion. They lived in Babylon-- they 'oughtta know! They certainly knew about it and they also knew about Zorastrianism too. Then they spent 500 years in Persia where they acquired another whole set of customs relating to dietary and other customs of clean and dirty -much like the priestly class system in India today .You'd have to study Persian religion from that time to figure that one out.

I beleive the threat of burning at some time in the future is a social control tool to manipulate masses. Its goal is to force willingly the obedience to priestly classes. It is rooted in the pagan history of the ancient near east. It came into existence before Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The history of human sacrifice and the god of war Baal (Babylon) , Saturn (Rome ) and Set ( pharonic Egypt). Center of that worship was Siwa oasis in ancient Egypt First Set then Saturn. Rome in the days before the republic and Babylon up to the fall of that empire.

Babylonian religion was an astrological based caste system. It was much like the one in India today also based on astrology. There certainly was trade with "india" in ancient times. Its not well known. Each caste was assigned a planetary god. People in each caste were assigned a different god to worship. All of this was Zodiacal.

This is where the book of revelations comes from- babylonian astrology. It does NOT belong in the Bible. It is irrefutable in scholarship. It is a remnant of Babylonian religion. It does not belong in the Bible because its not jewish! That is why Jews NEVER accepted it. Neither did certain groups of early Christians . Jews certainly would know as they were in captivity in Babylon. The fact that jews knew this dirty secret about the Bible was probably a big factor in their persecution by the Roman church.

The "other christians" --those not Roman - also did not accept the inclusion of Babylonian astrology in the Bible. The Christians in Kerala India and the christians who used the Peshitta text never had revelations in their Bible .

So I personally am against the whole idea of blowing up the whole planet with nuclear war and haveing an armageddon - whatever that is- so that a dead Jewish man from the 1st century of Rome can come back again. Mass human sacrifece.

Then there is the plutonium at the Dimona plant in Jerusalem... and the DU in Iraq. If the radiation lasts 250 thousand years-- that is an eternity.

Christians aren't the only people with the concept of Hell.

People through out time have wrestled with the problem can someone live a totally depraved and evil life and get away with it? If there is a god (or gods) and a heavenly place to reward the righteous after death then why not a place for divine justice and punishment?

One of the great questions of the Old Testament was when Job asked why does God let the wicked prosper?

Oddly enough the Bible says very little about Hell, though infers it by saying those who have not been saved can not enter the kingdom of heaven. Most modern Christians get their idea of Hell from Milton's epic poem Paradise Lost and not the scriptures.

The word “hell” is found in many Bible translations. In the same verses other translations read “the grave,” “the world of the dead,” and so forth. Other Bibles simply transliterate the original-language words that are sometimes rendered “hell”; that is, they express them with the letters of our alphabet but leave the words untranslated. What are those words? The Hebrew she’ohl′ and its Greek equivalent hai′des, which refer, not to an individual burial place, but to the common grave of dead mankind; also the Greek ge′en‧na, which is used as a symbol of eternal destruction. However, both in Christendom and in many non-Christian religions it is taught that hell is a place inhabited by demons and where the wicked, after death, are punished (and some believe that this is with torment).

Hell was a concept thought up by the ruling government at the creation of Judiasm, as a way of scaring its citizen's into obeying the law.

(Notice that three-quarters of the Torah lists social laws)

Religion was the only way to keep people afraid to disobey social laws. Though hell was originally not the firey lake we know to-day. Hell was more of a purgatory where you could feel the absense and hatred of god, and it would hurt.

Why waste your time challenging people about something that doesn't exist? Just as silly as saying: You are stupid to believe in leprechauns, I'm not.

You apparently have some unresolved ISSUES about religion.

May I recommend trying to figure out what you DO believe about things. It is a very important occupation. It colors your whole life. We all have BELIEFS about things. What are yours?

What do you care what mine are? So you can be superior to me? To what purpose?

I don't believe/think hell (or leprechauns) exist, and I think very little about it or those who do.

Hell in most literature is a bad place others go who don't agree with you. Some people live there. Others wish it on others. I don't.

I am busier trying to live a good, loving and compassionate life. To that end, I wish you comfort and peace in your beliefs, whatever they are.

Namaste.

Matthew 5:27-30 is just one of many verses in the New Testament that clearly refer to hell.

The New Testament contains at least two dozen verses that refer to a spiritual state of eternal damnation.

Most of them don't actually use the word "hell," but there are many ways to refer to hell -- just as there are many ways to refer to prison.

Whether you're in prison, jail, the big house, up the river, the joint, the slammer, the pen -- it's all the same thing, and believe me, you don't want to go there.

Because without Hell, Hitler will get off scott-free. Without Hell, Heaven WOULD be Hell. Believers would get a counterfeit Heaven and Heaven for non-believers WOULD be Hell. Imagine running from God your whole life only to be drawn into His presence against your will. That would be Hell!!! And also, God is just. He will make Hitler's Hell worse than a garden-variety Pagan's.

And We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between the two but in accordance with the requirements of wisdom; and the Hour is sure to come. So do thou forbear with goodly forbearance.

And when it is said to him, 'Fear Allah,' pride incites him to further sin. So Hell shall be his sufficient reward; and surely, it is an evil place of rest.

Hasten towards forgiveness from your Lord, and the Paradise whose value is the heavens and the earth. It is prepared for the God-fearing.

And those who believe and do righteous deeds - them shall We, surely, house in lofty mansions of Paradise, beneath which streams flow. They will abide therein. Excellent is the reward of those who labour for good,

Hell doesn't exist. "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." If it did, the Jews would believe in hell. They don't. The concept that we know as "hell" was created by a poet named Dante in the Inferno.

People think that hell exists because its part of their god delusion package. Once you start believing in an invisible being pushing the buttons that control the fate of the entire world, I imagine it would be easy to believe in other completely unsubstantiated things, like hell.

The Dark is NOT opposite of light , its the absence of light.

The Quiet is NOT the opposite of sound , its the absence of sound.

The Cold is NOT the opposite of warmth , its the absence of warmth.

And hell is NOT the opposite of God, its the absence of God.

They choose to believe in God. That's why they believe in a persons ability to deny Him (Thats hell).

HELL

http://www.biblebb.com/files/tniv/HELL.TXT

Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers.

PSA 9:17 The wicked return to the grave, all the nations that forget God.

139:8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the

depths, you are there.

PRO 5:5 Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave.

15:24 The path of life leads upward for the wise to keep him from going

down to the grave.

23:13 Do not withhold discipline from a child; if you punish him with the

rod, he will not die.

MAT 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be

subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is

answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in

danger of the fire of hell.

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It

is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to

be thrown into hell.

30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.

It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body

to go into hell.

7:13 "Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the

road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

10:28 Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the

soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in

hell.

13:38 The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the

kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one,

39 and the enemy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the end of the

age, and the harvesters are angels.

40 "As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at

the end of the age.

41 The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his

kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.

42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be

weeping and gnashing of teeth.

49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and

separate the wicked from the righteous

50 and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and

gnashing of teeth.

16:18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my

church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

23:15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You

travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one,

you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are.

33 "You snakes! You brood of vipers! How will you escape being condemned

to hell?

25:28 "'Take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten

talents.

29 For everyone who has will be given more, and he will have an abundance.

Whoever does not have, even what he has will be taken from him.

30 And throw that worthless servant outside, into the darkness, where

there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

41 "Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are

cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

46 "Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to

eternal life."

MAR 9:43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you

to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire

never goes out.

45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to

enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell.

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you

to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be

thrown into hell,

LUK 12:5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after the

killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you,

fear him.

16:23 In hell, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far

away, with Lazarus by his side.

24 So he called to him, 'Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus

to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in

agony in this fire.'

26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed,

so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross

over from there to us.'

2TH 1:9 They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out

from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power

JAM 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the

body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on

fire, and is itself set on fire by hell.

2PE 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to

hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment;

JUD 1:6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but

abandoned their own home--these he has kept in darkness, bound with

everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day.

REV 1:18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever

and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

6:8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named

Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over

a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild

beasts of the earth.

9:1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen

from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the

Abyss.

2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a

gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the

Abyss.

14:10 he, too, will drink of the wine of God's fury, which has been poured

full strength into the cup of his wrath. He will be tormented with burning

sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb.

11 And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no

rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for

anyone who receives the mark of his name."

19:20 But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had

performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had

deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his

image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning

sulfur.

20:10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of

burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They

will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up

the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he

had done.

14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of

fire is the second death.

15 If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was

thrown into the lake of fire.

21:8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the

sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all

liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the

second death."

Hell in the Bible

The word “Hell” shows up 54 times in the King James Version. But what does the Hebrew and Greek words means. The Old Testament uses only one Hebrew word. Strong’s number “07585 .“

Online Bible Greek Lexicon

As we read that “Sheol” means “grave,” the place of the dead.

So when people die, they are put into a grave or are buried. As Genesis 3:19 “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

Now the New Testament uses three Greek words. The first word, “hades,” means the “grave” as “Sheol” in the Old Testament.

Online Bible Greek Lexicon

The next word used in the New Testament is “Gehenna.” It means the “DUMP" out side of Jerusalem. In the dump a fire that is burning up the refuse.

The third word that the word “hell” is translated to is “tartaros.” This is used for Satan and his demons place of restraint. This is NOT pertaining to Humans.

Hell is derived from the Hebrew word Sheol which means grave..if you go to http://www.biblegateway.com and type hell into the keyword search engine...then pulling up mass scripture you will see this term in bold...simply mentally replace it with grave and you will see that it makes alot more sense. Hell comes from the term at the time of the middle ages for the Norse god of the underworld "Hel" as well as Hades was the Greek equivalent. These are pagan terms that don't apply to scripture literally. The Lake of Fire spoken of alagorically as Gehenna was used as an example of what the end state of the world will be...a huge burning garbage dump. Please use Wikipedia or other sources to look up these terms and the BibleGateWay site is especailly spiffy in this regard. Best wishes on your search. Love in Christ, ~J~
