Question:
Jesus edited the Ten Commandments?

In Matthew 19:18-19 he "edits" the Ten Commandments. When a rich young ruler asked which of the commandment he should follow to inherit eternal life only 6 were given:

You shall not murder
You shall not commit adultery
You shall not steal
You shall not bear false witness
Honor your father and mother
Love your neighbor as yourselves

These are unrelated to religous observances as the four he left out were (from the original ten):

You shall have no other Gods before me
You shall not make for yourselves and idol
You shall not make wrong use of the name of the Lord
Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy.

It seems Jesus stressed universal morals rather than particular religious principles in his message.

So, what do you make of all this?

Jesus was focusing in on the second table of the law, to demonstrate a particular point to this man. This man was seeking to keep a narrow, letter of the law, obedience of the Ten Commandments. However the sum of the second table of the law is to love thy neighbor as thyself (just as the sum of the first table of the law is to Love God with all your heart, read: Luke 10:27).

Jesus demonstrated to this man that he was unwilling to keep the the second table of the law because he did not want to part with his money. As a side note, Jesus also demonstrated to this man that he did not keep the first table of the law, because he was unwilling to follow Jesus.

You need to learn to read to the Bible the way that it was

intended as to applying its teaching . The verse that you

quote , Jesus at this time was not reciting all the commandments to the people , But !! addressing the heart

of one man . Jesus knew the answer before it was

given . Jesus omitted , Do Not Covet , which was the rich

mans problem and was preventing him from entering

heaven . Look at Mark 10:20-30 . You see that is why we

need Jesus . If you break one of the laws you are to be

Judged . Just because you were good at keeping some

and not the rest does not get you into heaven . We are

breaking the law if we steal one penny or a million dollars

it is the same , stealing . So be careful when you think you

know some thing that , as you found here , you did not .

Please ask next time before you condemn , not everything

is as it seems to be to the blind . May God Bless You with

His Saving Grace and reveal His truth to you , Amen...

Why is it that you think that just because Jesus only mentioned a few of the commandments to the rich young ruler that that means we don't have to follow the others. You are making assumptions. If you want to confirm whether God deleted some of the commandments you would have to read other text to find this out. Of course there is not one text in the Bible that tells us that some or all of the law has been done away with.

Jesus mentioned the few commandments that the rich young ruler was keeping. If you cannot give up your riches for the Lord that is considered worshiping other idols. Jesus then asked him to give them up, but he could not.

The same Jesus that only mentioned the few commandments here also said in Matthew 5:17-19, "Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets; I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and dearth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise passs from the law, till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men to do so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven; but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven."

Till heaven and earth shall pass. If you think the law is done away with just look into the heavens and then stomp your foot on the ground. If both are still there, so is the law!

Psalm 111:7-8 says, "The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. THEY STAND FAST FOREVER AND EVER, and are done in truth and uprightness."

Romans 7:12 says, "Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandments holy, and just, and good.

Psalm 119:172 says, "My tongue shall speak of thy word: for ALL thy commandments are righteousness."

John 14:15,16, 21 says, "If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved by my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him."

1 John 5:2-3 says, "By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous."

God says "If you love me keep my commandments." He did not say if you love me keep some of my commandments.

The main problem with what you are saying is the same problem I have seen many times. You are only taking a couple of texts to support your point. When we study the Bible we need to incorporate all the Bible texts not some of them. That is how we get misinterpretations. We are not to intrepret the Bible ourselves. As we further read and study the Bible will interpret itself.

Do not be deceived by the devil. You are doing exactly what he wants you to do.

God is love. God is the law.

Jesus listed the ones that he knew the man had obeyed perhaps. And when the man said all of these I have kept since my youth Jesus went on to show him that he had an idol of money and wealth and it came between him and God. Jesus was very smart the way he dealt with people. I hope this helps you.

Jesus stressed the last 6 commandments because the root sin separating the man from God was his love of stuff (covetousness). When the rich young ruler was faced with the choice of fellowship with God or his stuff, he chose his stuff.

What I make of it is this. He discredited ALL the words of Moses and attributed them to satan in a text rejected by the christian church from their bible called The Apocryphon of John. If you really like controversy, here it is with a captol C on a silver platter. While many are curious about the hubub created by the gnostic gospels, this critical text goes virtually unnoticed. Does no one wonder why?

No, He did NOT alter the original commandments. Think about it more carefully and you will see that what Jesus said includes the rest.

Jesus was a carpenter, not a supernatural being.
