Question:
Atheists: Where are the contradictions in the Bible?
Sam

I've heard a lot of atheists say "the Bible is plagued with contradictions!". I'm kinda curious... What and where are the contradictions? Dont' get me wrong; I'm not trying to be a troll, I'm just curious; maybe I can explain some of them. Now also, I don't want insults or trash answers; I want you to point out some contradictions you've seen. If you're not going to give me any answers and just say "Oh, Please! We all know the whole thing is a fairy tale! I don't even need to point any contradictions out... it's obvious!", then please don't answer :) All that shows is you can't point out anything... One more important thing; include references to the verses you quote. I don't want you making up things and saying "Well, it says in the Bible that...." and not give any reference. Even if you're pretty darn sure that the verse exists, I still need a reference. I see people making up verses very frequently on Y!A; it's quite obnoxious. Thanks!

I am not an Atheist, but I still recognize that the Bible was written by 40 authors with about 40 different political agendas. They each defined "God" in a way to control their followers. A few samples: God is seen and heard Ex 33:23/ Ex 33:11/ Gen 3:9,10/ Gen 32:30/ Is 6:1/ Ex 24:9-11 God is invisible and cannot be heard John 1:18/ John 5:37/ Ex 33:20/ 1 Tim 6:16 5. God is tired and rests Ex 31:17 God is never tired and never rests Is 40:28 6. God is everywhere present, sees and knows all things Prov 15:3/ Ps 139:7-10/ Job 34:22,21 God is not everywhere present, neither sees nor knows all things Gen 11:5/ Gen 18:20,21/ Gen 3:8 8. I have more general arguments, rather than factual contradictions.

Well first is that it's impossible to build an ark to house hundreds of millions of species. And keep them all fed. And have only one pair reproduce an entire population.

And Genesis. Many science fields clearly indicate that even if each day denotate a longer stretch of time, this would still make no sense unless each day was a different stroke of time, which is just nonsense.

As of general arguments, I do not see how something is the embodiment of love, mercy, and justice when he

-Casts a flood to kill everyone.

-Casts plague, pestilence Chronicles 21:12

-There are several instances of genocide

-Kills firstborns of Egypt. When did the sins of the ruling class get carried out to the people.

-Kills unbelievers Deuteronomy 13: 5

Not to mention the concept of hell, which I find RIDICULOUS. If a being was really supreme, he would have prophets in all corners of the Earth, not just one point. Why would you only give a select few a chance for salvation. Why would you toss the moral and good into hell but a piece of sh!t person who accepts Jesus into heaven.

Well, one of my favorites takes place in Genesis 4:12, in which God condemns Cain to be a fugitive and a vagabond upon the earth. Then in Genesis 4:16-17, the Bible turns around and says Cain had a son and built a city. So much for the vagabond lifestyle.

Be careful when you say "Maybe I can explain some of the contradictions". Many people try to explain away Biblical contradictions by simply inventing their own details and inserting them into the Bible wherever they see fit. This does NOT resolve the contradiction. Contradictions from scripture can only be resolved through scripture.

God knows all, but God didn't know that Eve would be necessary until Adam couldn't find a suitable animal *helper.*

Genesis:

2:18 And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.

2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.

2:20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him.

2:21 And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof;

2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

So you can quote apologetics, that I've already read and rejected, at me?

No thanks!

(My personal favorite is the death(s) of Judas. Simply because the Apologetics to reconcile the two are so unbelievably ridiculous. Matthew 27:3-8 and Acts 1:15-19.)

I'm an Agnostic and here is one major contradiction: It's way I left Christianity. Christians believe that there is only one God and he is their God. But in the Ten Commandments God says, "I am a jealous God." Okey, if God made the Ten Commandment, why would he acknowledge that he is not the only God? And then tell you he is jealous?

You may have asked for It. There is a woman that posts six miles of " cut and paste " to this very question. Prepare yourself for the deluge of truth.

The bible is a work of fiction. What matter contradictions?

You don't need references, pal, you need a brain.

i actually can't say what are the contradiction in bible as i didn't read it, because i don't like fairy tales genre, but i can say christian's contradictions: you claim to spread equality but thinking yourself as truth-holders and superior you want to convert others and you caused wars for this and this is not a behavoiur that shows belief in equality; you claim to care about everyone, but what you do for them?...you only pray rather than having a real role in society to help people in need

well this is to respond to all those who say that there are contradictions in the Bible. The Bible cannot contradict itself because it is the inspired word of God. Where there seems to be contradictions is actually just deepening one's understanding of a spiritual principle so if we see two verses contradict we must search on how they don't in order to fully understand what God wants to get at with that principle that is being taught. To say you know the bible means you have to study it and to study it means to go deeper then just saying that two things contradict on the surface and leave it at that. If you want to say something contradicts then you need to understand what is being said before you pass judgement.

The 5th commandment is Thou shalt not MURDER, not just "kill" witchcraft is a mortal sin.

There are no true contradictions, just apparent, as I have just proved.

Plus, they are not all meant to be interpreted literally!

I can disprove all the "contradictions" here.

Rabbits do not chew their cud

LEV 11:6 And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

'Gerah', the term which appears in the MT means (chewed) cud, and also perhaps grain, or berry (also a 20th of a sheckel, but I think that we can agree that that is irrelevant here). It does *not* mean dung, and there is a perfectly adequate Hebrew word for that, which could have been used. Furthermore, the phrase translated 'chew the cud' in the KJV is more exactly 'bring up the cud'. Rabbits do not bring up anything; they let it go all the way through, then eat it again. The description given in Leviticus is inaccurate, and that's that. Rabbits do eat their own dung; they do not bring anything up and chew on it.

LEV 11:23 But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.

Order of creation

Here is the order in the first (Genesis 1), the Priestly tradition:

Day 1: Sky, Earth, light

Day 2: Water, both in ocean basins and above the sky(!)

Day 3: Plants

Day 4: Sun, Moon, stars (as calendrical and navigational aids)

Day 5: Sea monsters (whales), fish, birds, land animals, creepy-crawlies (reptiles, insects, etc.)

Day 6: Humans (apparently both sexes at the same time)

Day 7: Nothing (the Gods took the first day off anyone ever did)

Note that there are "days," "evenings," and "mornings" before the Sun was created. Here, the Deity is referred to as "Elohim," which is a plural, thus the literal translation, "the Gods." In this tale, the Gods seem satisfied with what they have done, saying after each step that "it was good."

The second one (Genesis 2), the Yahwist tradition, goes:

Earth and heavens (misty)

Adam, the first man (on a desolate Earth)

Plants

Animals

Eve, the first woman (from Adam's rib)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How orderly were things created?

#1: Step-by-step. The only discrepancy is that there is no Sun or Moon or stars on the first three "days."

#2: God fixes things up as he goes. The first man is lonely, and is not satisfied with animals. God finally creates a woman for him. (funny thing that an omniscient god would forget things)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How satisfied with creation was he?

#1: God says "it was good" after each of his labors, and rests on the seventh day, evidently very satisfied.

#2: God has to fix up his creation as he goes, and he would certainly not be very satisfied with the disobedience of that primordial couple. (funny thing that an omniscient god would forget things)

The GENEALOGY OF JESUS?

In two places in the New Testament the genealogy of Jesus son of Mary is mentioned. Matthew 1:6-16 and Luke 3:23-31. Each gives the ancestors of Joseph the CLAIMED husband of Mary and Step father of Jesus. The first one starts from Abraham(verse 2) all the way down to Jesus. The second one from Jesus all the way back to Adam. The only common name to these two lists between David and Jesus is JOSEPH, How can this be true? and also How can Jesus have a genealogy when all Muslims and most Christians believe that Jesus had/has no father.
