As long as they're not playing that crappy Chipmunks Christmas song I'm good. My parents used to play that all season long.

Nope, I'm usually not a public plaza to listen to music. Do Christians get upset when Starbucks cups don't say merry Christmas? Yes they do

Public plazas? Like...what exactly?

For the most part, public (meaning government owned or run) places here do not do so. However, even if they did, I wouldn't be upset. It's cultural rather than religious, really. Moreover, I would also expect them to play more contemporary, secular seasonal songs, too.

Christmas is nothing to do with Christianity but has it's origins in the midwinter festival and many other basically pagan rites but since much of it is a celebration of nature rather than religion everyone should be able to enjoy it and be happy together despite religion!!

The ancient European pagans celebrated the midwinter festival and a number of other festivals long before Christianity ever existed!

Babylonians celebrated the feast of the Son of Isis with gluttonous eating and drinking, and gift giving and the goddess of fertility, love, and war.

The Romans held a festival on 25 December called “Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, celebrating their own god Sol Invictas - PAGAN.

The Persian god Mithras, the Syrian sun god Elah Gabal, the German Sol, the Greek Helios and the Mesopotamian Shamash. But also Saturnalia, honouring Saturn, the God of Agriculture. The law courts and schools were closed. No public business could be transacted an this is where the holidays originated - ALL PAGAN!!!

Wax tapers were given by the more humble to their superiors. The origin of the Christmas candle - PAGAN!!

In Rome groups of costumed went from house to house entertaining their people. And this was where the carolling Christmas tradition originated PAGAN!!

Statues of the Mother and lover or Mother and son were paraded through the streets not only in Italy but also in Africa, Spain, Portugal, France, Germany and Bulgaria. Thus, the symbolism of the Heavenly Virgin and the infant child paraded on a yearly basis are not of Christian origin. They stem from the Mother-goddess religion, which is very ancient ENTIRELY PAGAN!!.

Scandinavian countries celebrated Yule honouring Thor - PAGAN.

In Germania (not Germany) they celebrated midwinter night followed by 12 wild nights of eating and drinking. The 12 days of Christmas PAGAN!!

The church under Pope Julius I declared that Christ’s birth would be celebrated on December 25 in 350 AD in order to try to hijack the PAGAN festivals but it was largely ignored. Christians did not really celebrate Christmas until 378 but it was then dropped in 381 and not resurrected until 400.

The Christmas tree stems from pagan tradition and ritual surrounding the Winter Solstice, which included the use of holly boughs ivy and other foliage as an adaptation of pagan tree worship. Holly and ivy represented male and female. Mistletoe was considered a sacred plant, and the custom of kissing under the mistletoe began as a fertility ritual - all PAGAN!!

Jeremiah 10:1.25 Thus says the Lord: “Learn not the way of the nations, nor be dismayed at the signs of the heavens because the nations are dismayed at them, for the customs of the peoples are vanity. A tree from the forest is cut down and worked with an axe by the hands of a craftsman. They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so that it cannot move. Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field.

Santa Claus came from the Dutch “Sinterklaas” and was a tall figure riding a white horse through the air and usually accompanied by Black Peter, an elf who punished disobedient children. Also the origin of the reindeer, sleigh and the elves ALL PAGAN!!

The modern red coated Santa was brought about by coca cola!!

America actually banned Christmas several times and is the originator of the expression “Happy Holidays” which came about because of the pagan origins of Christmas to include all religions and traditions!!

The Venerable Bede, an early Christian writer pointed out that the Christian church absorbed Pagan practices when it found the population unwilling to give up the festivals. Thus a lot of what Christians now see as Christian practices are in fact pagan!!!

Christmas is the time of year Christians strive to prove just how pagan they have become!!!

I'm not an atheist but I get really upset when forced to endure Christmas music in supermarkets and public places in November and all the way through December.

There is a time and a place for Christmas music - and it isn't 6 weeks before the event and in secular buildings or public places.

Some do, most do not.

Sweeping generalizations yield useless results.

----- ----- -----

I am an atheist and I celebrate Christmas with my family and friends, most of whom are Christians. They know my beliefs but still enjoy my company and I theirs.

I give gifts and I decorate my house for Christmas. I truly enjoy the Christmas movies and shows on TV at that time of year. I listen to Christmas carols on the radio.

If all of the celebrations, stories and customs were built around "Groundhog Day" instead, I would still enjoy it.

I think when people come, like a geyser, like Old Faithful, i think it's kinda hot...

UPDATE: lol, look at the answers here.

The atheists basically don't give a siht... and, as usual, the ranting cult believers, like Flowerchild and FurBall, are the ones playing "victim" who get wound up and whiney about it...

And then, go to Starbucks -- where they refuse to put anything christian-related on their cups -- who gets bent out of shape? The christian cult believers do -- and they start their boycotts...

So, let's not misrepresent who makes a BIG DEAL out of this siht, ok?

You fuc*ing christian liars...let's try to keep it honest...

jesus h tittty-nipple --- what else is new...

As many people don't celebrate Christmas it shouldn't be played in a public setting.

If they are, they're not true atheists. A true atheist would think Christmas music is like any other music-for entertainment only.

no I don't get upset. some times i find it comical that in 2016 it's still like this.. kind of like i'm living in a twilight zone.. i just go with that. some of the music is pleasing too so I don't mind that part of it it's more the lyrics

You don't have to understand it, but no we really don't care what music is played in malls. We are not as sensitive as Christians want us to be. Had to develop a thick skin since they stopped the hangings and burnings.

I personally am quite happy with carols.

Would you be upset if they played 'I believed in Father Christmas' Greg Lake?

Nope.

It just makes me wish for better music. My taste in music is a bit more sophisticated than that. Those are children's songs.

Most people get upset cause the music gets irritating after a while.

I don't... I sing along.

But then I was raised a Roman Catholic, until I reached the age of reason.

No, I rather enjoy it. Where I live the "war on Christmas" is being conducted by Orthodox Jews and staunch Muslims, so it's nice to see "traditions" still embraced.

I find it boring and mindlessly repetitious, but if is in a shopping mall, which is private property, I have no problem with it.
