Question:
Under what circumstances would it ever be good to "not question" something?

I honestly can't think of anything personally. Certain religions say you should never question certain things, and I wonder why.

Never. Whenever you grant unquestioning faith to someone, you're granting them complete control over you. And nothing good ever comes from that.

Questioning is good and helps people to grow. I agree with you 100% on that.

But I can think of two instances when it wouldn't be good to question.

(1) When you are not yet ready for the answer, it would be better just to trust and wait until God tells gives you the answer when the time is right. Sometimes, we're so eager to know... but then when we DO know, it just seems completely overwhelming to have so much knowledge and responsibility.

(2) The other instance where it is better/good not to question, is when you don't really want to have an answer that confirms the truth of what you have heard/learned. If you've already made your own mind up what the answer is, there is no point in asking the question.

Not all questions can be answered with words. Sometimes only experience can teach.

There should never be a time (save for maybe a life and death situation) that questions should not be asked and answered. That said, it must also be recognized that there will always be questions for which answers are beyond out capacity to understand or even expressed.

In the realm of religion, most questions should and must have logical answers. There will be some, however, for which the best answer we can hope for is simply, "because God said so". The question which we can answer provide the foundation of our trust in God, those we cannot provide the foundation of our faith.

My own path is primarily a pragmatic one. Taoists tend to talk in terms of what you can eat, drink and what pleases the eye and uplifts the heart. For us those are things that make a difference in life.

Other issues such as how the cosmos started, whether there is life elsewhere in the universe, whether Coke really is better than Pepsi, well, those are things that are fun to reflect upon but ultimately not having an answer isn't going to make much of a difference to our enjoyment of everyday life.

So it's not so much you *shouldn't* question, just that we need to keep a perspective on how much time and energy we should reasonably expend on things, particularly when to do so distracts us from living our lives. 's all.

This is an excellent question. Only in Christianity and Islam does it apply, though.

You see, if you are going to be shunned, tortured, even killed, it is in the interests of survival to "not question" ANYTHING put across by the dominant faith, especially if they also have political power.

Otherwise, there is no situation where this applies.

Truthfully, I can't think of anything. I strongly believe that everything is open to questioning. Some people might suggest that military commands and all laws should simply be obeyed and not questioned, but I tend to disagree with that, as well. Some commands and laws are morally unjust, and as such, must be questioned by a person of conscience.

When you are told that if you don't convert you will be burned alive. There is a reason why there are so many Christians and it was not because they wanted it but were forced under pain of death.

A few generations later you are left with only Christians all relying on blind faith. Ignorance is a wonderful tool to control the masses.

Perhaps when you are in danger and have only that moment to jump to safety ! ?

It is our nature to question things. I believe that it is a healthy thing to do .

A 'religion' requiring people not to question , sounds like some sort of controlling cult to me .

In the LDS faith you are encouraged to question, and search and study and seek. Now like any other religion we cannot with certainty answer where God came from, however you get my point. We don't hear, "that's the way it is done". or , "It's always been that way".

When you are extremely exhausted and your partner (wife/husband/etc.) is speaking nonsense and you just want some sleep. Then is a good time not to question the issues, just nod and roll over.

If someone has a gun pointed at you, it wouldn't be wise to ask them whether the gun is loaded, as they might test that theory out on you.

Otherwise, question everything... uhh wait except your wife, I'm with darwinsfriend on that point!

Jesus NEVER encouraged us to hold back our questions. He taught using them. The bible tells us to search for the truth in the bible as if digging for gold. The digging would be studying and the gold is the answers to our many questions. Go to www.watchtower.org and you can find so many answers using your own bible! You can even request a free home bible study in your area and get those questions answered using your bible.
