When Jesus told them to divide and conquer. Couldn't someone have explained to them what that means?

When Jesus told them to divide and conquer, apparently they didn't know what that means. And instead of dividing the enemy, they proceeded to divide themselves.

Now look, they have over a thousand denominations, and are making more every year. Why didn't someone explain to them what Jesus meant? Likely it was their enemies he wanted them to divide. Huh?

He did state this though:



Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

Mat 28:20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.
