did the Holy Bible and the Holy Qur'an's extensive writings on the treatment of widows and children reflect the violent times in which they were written? i.e. were they a product of their times? thanks much!

I cannot comment on bible but what I know about Islam and what I have learnt ,I say Islam is a universal religion and you can test with any touch stone even with touch-stone of time and it will prove you that it is real and is from God.

It gives you a general message, that how you should treat your children, I am posting some examples from Holy Quran.

(Verily Allah enjoins justice and the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, wickedness, and injustice and oppression. He admonishes you that you may take heed.

[16:90]

Quran says:

(As for the orphans, do not treat them with harshness.)

[93:9]

Quran says:

(Verily, those who unjustly eat up the property of orphans, they eat up only a fire into their bellies, and they will be burnt in the Blazing fire!)

[4:10]

Islamic principles and messages from religious texts.

“There is no bigger sin than neglecting your dependents”

“Eat and drink but waste not by excess.”

“Educate your children for they are born for a time that is not yours.”

Quran believes in a society, which itself realizes its rights and duties. Like It is duty of parents to do good care for their children and it is duty of children to pay respect to their parents. Do not be harsh with parents. According to hadith of prophet Mohammed, paradise is beneath the feet of your mother. If you respect your mother, you will get paradise. These are general instructions and applicable every where in every society and in every age.

Let's see what the Holy Bible says about widows...

Matthew 23:14

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

Mark 12:40

Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

Luke 20:47

Which devour widows' houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

The Holy Bible says the people who take advantage of widows get a horrible punishment.

1 Timothy 5:3

Honour widows that are widows indeed.

The Holy Bible says to Honor widows.

James 1:27

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

The Holy Bible also states that pure religion to God is helping fatherless children and widows.

Jesus also expressly yelled at people for not feeding their children and said people who abuse children are better off being thrown in a lake with a rock tied to their neck. The bible is SO violent towards child abusers and takes care of children and widows Ooooo how horrible. No it was not influenced by the time of writers it was influenced by God.

Isn't it funny how people thumbs down the comment that actually posts what the bible ACTUALLY says... oh well you know after all the antichrists are just plain liars...

I don't know what the Qur'an says about the treatment of children but I do know what the Bible says: love them, take care of them, edify them, raise them to walk in the ways of the Lord (by example). as far as the 'time table' goes, we still live in violent times, kids are still sold into slavery, sex slavery, murdered, abused, raped, etc (as are adults), we've just become super immune almost numb to these headlines, that it doesn't penetrate our hearts as much. just because the Bible gives examples of grape harvesting and stoning (both of which are done to this day) doesn't mean its any less relevant because I'm texting this from my palm. its not outdated to be obedient to God, which is where love, joy, peace, mercy, honor, compassion, justice are truly rooted. This earth is full of ppl who are confused, hurt, hateful, sick all cuz they choose sin over righteous (right standing with God) ..ohh and true obedience from the heart comes from Loving God... I hope all you guys have a blessed day. P.S. to the person quoting matt & luke...Jesus was taking about ppl being 'religious' stuck on traditions, process n procedure, that nothing they did was from their heart, they were hard and severe on those who were defenseless (i.e. widows who had no1 to look out for them)..so in short He was rebuking hypocrites those who 'say' they love the Lord but their actions and attitudes of the heart said a different story..none the less I know where u were going ;-). again God bless..hope I was of some help..

The Quran's writing on treatment of children is applicable to when it was sent and now. Has our time really changed from then? Even the type of violent treatment now is worse than whatever they used 2 av in the time of d prophets.

Those times were, indeed violent and women especially bore the brunt of this. They were not as valued even as male slaves!

Jesus Christ changed this. He insisted that men and women are equal - different, with different roles, yet equal. This idea was radical at the time. For example, men are commanded to love their wives as Christ loves the church - meaning they should treat her exceedinly well and with respect and be willing to lay down their lives for their wives. There is much misunderstanding around this by those who have not studied the issue. Widows were to be taken care of by the church. This, again, was radical. Back then, if they did not have children to support them, they pretty much suffered and died.

As for children, there is not much said, though Christ gives us an example. When he was talking with his disciples and some children came, the disciples, men of their culture, tried to shoo the children away from Jesus. He told them to let the children come to Him and showed them great tenderness. Radical.

It is Christian values that have fought had the greatest influence on the treatment of women and children in the West. Even on slaves. It was Christians who fought long and hard to free them. (Check William Wilberforce in England, followed by Lincoln in the US. And remember that slavery in Bible times was NOT like slavery in the West or in Arab countries then and now. It was similar to an employer-employee relationship, or like a ball player who works on contract and whose contract is bought and sold.)

70 virgins??? Mat 22:28 hence interior the resurrection whose spouse shall she be of the seven? for all of them had her. Mat 22:29 Jesus responded and pronounced unto them, Ye do err, no longer understanding the scriptures, nor the skill of God. Mat 22:30 For interior the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, yet are because of the fact the angels of God in heaven. Hmmmm.

Yes it did, why would anyone want to treat children the way they were treated by primitive people.

Yes, they couldn't see into the future, could they? Culture and society has changed, the Quran and Bible are outdated, yet people continue to invest their lives in it.

I think both the Quran and bible is subject to the time it was written in and therefore cannot be god's timeless word. It shouldn't be applied to modern society anymore.
