That may have seemed a strange question, especially since John saw God’s spirit descend upon Jesus and heard God’s voice of approval when baptizing him nearly two years before. John’s question may cause some to conclude that his faith has grown weak. But this is not so. Jesus would not have spoken so highly of John, which he does on this occasion, if John had begun to doubt. Why, then, did John ask this question?

John may simply have wantde a verification from Jesus that He was the Messiah. This would have been very strengthening to John as he languished in prison. But apparently there was more to John’s question than that. He evidently wanted to know if there was to be another one coming, a successor, as it were, who would complete the fulfillment of all the things that were foretold to be accomplished by the Messiah.

According to Bible prophecies with which John was acquainted, God’s anointed One was to be a king, a deliverer. Yet John was still being held prisoner, even many months after Jesus was baptized. So John evidently was asking Jesus: ‘Are you the one to establish the Kingdom of God in outward power, or is there a different one, a successor, for whom we should wait to fulfill all the prophecies relating to the Messiah’s glory?’

Instead of telling John’s disciples, ‘Of course I am the one who was to come!’ Jesus in that very hour put on a remarkable display by healing many people of all kinds of diseases and ailments. Then he told the disciples: “Go your way, report to John what you saw and heard: the blind are receiving sight, the lame are walking, the lepers are being cleansed and the deaf are hearing, the dead are being raised up, the poor are being told the good news. And happy is he who has not stumbled over me.”

In other words, since John’s question may imply an expectation of Jesus’ doing more than he is doing, such as freeing John himself, Jesus is telling John not to expect more than all of this.

Fine question by the way.

I think John like many had to have been so conditioned, he did express doubt, but before His death, I am sure he was at peace with Jesus Christ.

... i am not sure how to answer this...

but i do know, that Jesus Christ did not hold this against John, because he said this regarding John....

Realizing that some of the people went to see a prophet, Jesus commended John to them saying he was more than a prophet (v. 9), because John is the one Malachi spoke of when he said, "I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way for me" (Malachi 3:1).

Then, once again preaching the gospel Jesus said,

"No one has been greater than John the baptizer, yet the most lowly person in God's kingdom will be greater than John is today." (Matthew 11:11)

The then imprisoned John was using this means to persuade his disciples to forsake him and follow Jesus. The act itself was a final great testimony on John's part that Jesus was the Lamb of God, the Messiah for John knew that them seeing the Master personally and hearing him teach, they could not help but follow the greater light.

Your question is complicated and the respond is fairly complicated. Jesus is the God of the old testomony. he's the only God that dealt with every physique. 1Co 10:a million in addition to, brethren, i would not that ye ought to be ignorant, how that each and every physique our fathers have been under the cloud, and all surpassed interior the process the sea; 1Co 10:2 And have been all baptized unto Moses interior the cloud and interior the sea; 1Co 10:3 And did all consume an analogous religious meat; 1Co 10:4 And did all drink an analogous religious drink: for they drank of that religious Rock that accompanied them: and that ROCK became into CHRIST. Joh 5:37 And the daddy himself, which hath despatched me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape. John the Baptist were telling the those that one greater effective than himself became into coming. while Jesus became into baptized the descending dove became into an indication to John that Jesus became into the single he were instructed of. Jesus already had God's spirit devoid of degree before His start. He became into despatched to "reveal" the daddy to us. Luk 10:22 All issues are further to me of my Father: and no guy knoweth who the Son is, however the daddy; and who the daddy is, however the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him.

Good question. But Holy Spirit doesn't grant omniscience. Its kind powerful and maybe God didn't want to overload John. It's kinda like Elijah when he ran from Jezebel right after he had just seen fire come down from heaven. We are just human and sometimes we don't understand everything.

Perhaps he began to doubt because a lot of the Jews were looking for a Messiah to deliver them from the Romans.

I have the Holy Spirit in me and I often fail to see Jesus in my brother Christians.

When things were going well his faith was strong, the doubt that you quoted came while he was in prison (as can be seen from Matthew's account) and in need of encouragement, which Jesus gave with his reply.. even the best of us have needs and weaknesses..

He did know in his spirit. He said here is a man whose sandal I'm not fit to untie. That is knowing Jesus deity and rank and position.

the clue is in the sandal part of the story , to carry ones sandals in those days was that you were recognising the owner of the sandals to be in high authority . and john felt he was not worthy to even untie the strap

Yes. The following is a brief explanation.

For a detailed explanation I suggest you read my teaching at the link provided.

What does Scripture teach?

This rehearsal of the slaughter of the lamb was a shadow of the lamb of Yah to come. Exodus 12:3 clearly states that the selection of the lamb occurs on the tenth of the month, and Exodus 12:6 states that the lamb is to be slaughtered at twilight on the fourteenth of the same month. According to Exodus 12 there should only be four days between the selection of the lamb and its slaughter. John 12:1 indicates that Messiah arrived in Bethany six days before Passover. If John is correct (which I assume he is), then Messiah would have arrived in Bethany on the ninth of Nissan. John 12:12 states that on the next day the Messiah went up to Jerusalem. If Messiah was in Bethany on the ninth, then He must have rode up into Jerusalem on the tenth. On the tenth of Nissan/Abib the High Priest would leave the temple and go down to the sheep pens at Bethany to select a lamb for Passover. After the High Priest selected the lamb he would return back up to the temple carrying the lamb, least it should stumble and become blemished. Pilgrims who had come up to Jerusalem for the Feast lined the road to praise the lamb that the High Priest had selected for Passover. Are you beginning to see the picture? Let’s look at a type here.

Messiah the Lamb of Yah comes up from Bethany on the same day and at the same hour as the High Priest. But instead of the people praising the high priest’s lamb they were shouting praises to the Messiah. The religious leaders then told Messiah to rebuke His disciples (Luke 19:39). After the High Priest returned to the temple he would examine his lamb for the next four days to insure it was unblemished and fit for sacrifice. During the next four days Messiah too was examined by both the chief priests and the elders (Matt. 21:23-27, 21:15-22, 21:23-33, 21:34-40), and after four days neither they, nor Pilate, could find any fault with Messiah the Lamb of Yah (Mark 12:35 and Luke 23:14). As stated in John 18:28, Yeshua went before Pilate BEFORE Passover.

Now lets dig a little deeper. Heres a nugget most will miss if it is not pointed out to them. John 1:29-31 The next day he saw Yeshua coming to him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of Yah who takes away the sin of the world! “This is He on behalf of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ “And I did not recognize Him, but in order that He might be manifested to Israel, I came baptizing in water.” As we just previously read, only the High Priest (or a descendent of the High Priest), could ever offer up the Passover lamb at the Temple.

Yeshua came to John at the river Jordan and what does John declare to all those who witnessed Yeshua’s baptism of the Holy Spirit?

John The baptist was from the line of the High Priests of Israel. John’s father was Zechariah (Luke 1:5). John had the authority to declare Yeshua as the “Lamb Of Yah” who came to take away the sins of the world. Long before Yeshua’s death, John had proclaimed Him as the shadow of things to come.

Lets look at something else that’s not a coincidence John The Baptist was born on Passover. The Jews had been expecting the Messiah to come, but they knew according to scripture (Malichi 4:5) that a man had to come to them with the “spirit of Elijah” first. To this very day, the Jewish people still set a plate for Eliyah at the seder table during Passover. Yeshua revealed John’s having the “spirit of Eliyah” in Matt. 11:14 “And if you care to accept it, he himself is Elijah, who was to come. “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

Now what day was the Lamb of Yah slaughtered?

If Messiah was resurrected early on the first day of the week, (Roman/Gregorian Calendar), then we need to count back three days and three nights and we will arrive at Thursday for Messiah’s execution. This is how it would work out if the practices of the pagan churches (proclaimed Christian churches) of the world were correct. Even looking through their eyes, it doesn't work out to a Friday for Calvary.
