Question:
Question for Muslims about the Hijab?

Do you really believe that God Almighty has instructed women to live their entire lives keeping their heads covered in public and not show off their hair, however beautifully done, in public. That women, whatever be the respect given to them, should not have the right to display to the world, the beauty that lies in hair coiffure?

Nobody can believe in God Almighty as much as I, and yet I find it hard to believe that He who created both men and women has given such a rule.

The only explanation that I can reconcile this women's head covering rule with the Almighty God (over whom Arabia or Islam does not have a monopoly) I believe is that this was an Arabic tradition that somehow found its way into Holy words in the centuries following the Prophet.

So the question to ponder over is- Is there really a Divine, God-given rule that Muslim women must conceal their beauty by covering their heads with a hijab, or is it just Arabian tradition that you're really following without knowing it.

Isn't this more a question of which religion is correct than whether God commanded Muslim women to cover their heads?

Since the command for Muslim women to cover their heads is in the Qur'an, and since Islam professes that the Qur'an is the very word of God, then of course Muslims believe it to be a divine command and consider it sinful to disobey.

I proved that hijab is required of Musim women in my post at https://answersrip.com/question/index?qid=20080117125837AArgGUT&r=w#AJZoKXHuBHIoGvr.HqF6 .

In fact it's not just Muslims who think women should wear veils. Orthodox Jewish women wear headscarves (or wigs) and, if the bible is any indication, Christians are merely being hypocritical about it:

"For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered." (1 Corinthians, 11:6).

That having been said, as an atheist I agree that local traditions rather than the almighty are responsible for this. Covering your head was once considered an upper class thing in the Middle East and some scientists argue that it found its way into religion as a way of showing that believers were 'noble' (if not materially speaking then in a spiritual sense).

That's whats wrong with most people in the world today. Its so sad that you think that showing you hair makes you beautiful. Yes, some Muslims are forced to cover their head but majority of them do it because they want to. How very sad it is to see that people think that your only beautiful if you have on tight clothes and have your hair showing. It is also disappointing to know that the questioner has no sense of history to see the Jews AND Christians covered their hair for modesty purposed as well. So basically what your saying is the Muslims women are not beautiful because they cover their heads. Well then I guess Nuns aren't either. :(

Your question is based upon what you personally believe. The truth is that it does not matter what you personally believe, it is what God wants from us.

Western society focuses on objecting to hijab and modest dress because of the leanings of that society. There are other factors but too detailed to go into here.

Consider this - in China one of the main focuses of their anti Muslim rants is the prohibition on eating pork. They cannot conceive of a God that would make it sinful to eat pork, just as you cannot conceive of God asking people to dress modestly.

Both of these objections are based on the belief system of the society in question. Whenever an individual or a society puts their own cultural traditions and prejudices above what God has explicitly asked us to do then they are following their own egos.

In Islam we are at peace with God's requirements of us and do our best to do what he asks us to do and avoid what he asks us to avoid, putting our will under His will.

edit:

I completely denounce what Mr. Muslim says below as being totally without any merit and not a true example at all of Islamic Law. It is a complete misconception that I have seen taught in many countries AS Islamic law but it holds no water under the scrutiny of Ulama.

Great question, i'm a muslim girl so my word is good lol ;-)

Down to business, i'll be totally serious

The sole Quranic verse used by "scholars" to demand women to cover the hair as part of aurat (which is genitalia in Arabic btw-wierd huh genitalia =hair) is verse 31 from Surah An Nur ( Light) Both men and women were commanded to lower their gazes and dress modestly. for women the aurat includes the chest (of cos !)

The verse states very clearly, draw your khimar over your bosoms. Muhammad Asad in his commentary of this verse wrote that the khimar in question is a traditional piece of clothing used by both men and women of that period, but Arab women used too revealed too much cleavage , as that was the en vogue thing to do then . Plus they would flas their boobs for their husbands in public whenever they are off to battfileds as a way of encouraging the warrior spirit lol....in them.

There is a hadith that claims Prophet Muhamad (pbuh) said women shud cover everything except the hands and face. This hadith is a very weak hadith, the narrator does not reach Aisha or Muhammad. Therefore must be discarded along with those hadiths which says that "women will be in hell in greater numbers" etc etc .

It's all patriachal BS. Very plain to see unless they feel that since the status quo benefits them , why challenge it ? Keep the women subjugated as long as they can. I've asked the same questions on hijab on answer as u did and they delete em all.

Hijab is gender segregation and visual terrorisation towards non-muslims. The beard and hijab is a political statement .The Quran does not blame Eve for the fall of Adam, it does not say that females should cover their hair , get over yourselves you deluded muslims, we as rational beings who possess free will ought to be treated as agents of history, not enslaved by it.

Make that epistemic leap already for the love of God , please!

A clarification of the rulings that can be derived from the evidences on Hijaab, and they are as follows:

1. The obligation of the legislated Hijaab is definite and binding on all of the believing women, there being no room for lenience or negotiation with regard to abolishing it or belittling its status and its significance.

2. A clarification that the Prophet’s chaste wives and noble daughters serve as the best examples and most outstanding role models for all Muslim women when it comes to implementing the issue of Hijaab.

3. The prescribed Hijaab is that which covers a woman’s adornment, garments and all of her body, which includes the face and the hands.

4. The obligation of wearing the Hijaab on the Muslim woman consists of honoring her status, raising her rank, and protecting her dignity and personality. In fact it protects the whole society from the avenues of mischief and corruption appearing in it and the spreading of vile acts amongst its people and inhabitants.

5. A severe warning to the Muslim woman against her wearing that which will make the eyes of men look towards her or which will make their hearts incline to her or which will incite the causes of mischief. Such enticements include wearing perfumes and cosmetics. However she is permitted to wear these when she is in the presence of her husband or her male guardians according to the limits of the noble Religion.

6. There is nothing wrong with children, young boys and whoever else falls under their ruling, to enter into a woman’s presence due to the lack of there occurring any fitnah or danger from them, as is apparent from the Qur’aan.

7. The obligation of repenting to Allaah in general and to seek forgiveness for falling short of abiding by the Hijaab in particular, hoping for Allaah’s Contentment and Mercy, and desiring to attain success in both this world and the next life, acting on Allaah’s statement:

“And turn in repentance to Allaah, all of you, O believers, in order that you may be successful.” [Surah An-Noor: 31]

It was Arabian tradition . Since Islam is Arabian's religion , hijab became the Islamic dress of women. Behold here ! if you don't know Arabic language, you can never be a Muslim.

Yes Quran confirmed that , OT , and NT also confirmed that , Please read Corinthians 11 ,

Also please notice that Grand Mothers of present Jews and Christians used to cover their heads while now it remained as the costume of the nuns . and even now some bias Christians and Jews still doing it when they go to church or synagogue

So you see it is not only Muslim women that were to cover , the truth is that Muslim Women still abide by Allah's rules while others not.

Its not about arabian tradition, its about Islam, we are not the ones who know what is best, it is ALlah who knows what is best for us, and what he commands is for the best of us, you, the Hijab is a beautiful, in which less eyes will gaze at ur beauty, and ppl would not bother you as much, a girl, wearing nice loose outfit, with a Hijab on her head, will receive less stares than a girl wearing tight and exposing cloth

Bismillāhir-Raúmānir-Raúeem = "In the name of Allah, most Gracious, most Compassionate".

The status of women in Islam is often the target of attacks in the secular media. The ‘hijaab’ or the Islamic dress is cited by many as an example of the ‘subjugation’ of women under Islamic law. Before we analyze the reasoning behind the religiously mandated ‘hijaab’, let us first study the status of women in societies before the advent of Islam

1. In the past women were degraded and used as objects of lust

The following examples from history amply illustrate the fact that the status of women in earlier civilizations was very low to the extent that they were denied basic human dignity:

1. Babylonian Civilization:

The women were degraded and were denied all rights under the Babylonian law. If a man murdered a woman, instead of him being punished, his wife was put to death.

2. Greek Civilization:

Greek Civilization is considered the most glorious of all ancient civilizations. Under this very ‘glorious’ system, women were deprived of all rights and were looked down upon. In Greek mythology, an ‘imaginary woman’ called ‘Pandora’ is the root cause of misfortune of human beings. The Greeks considered women to be subhuman and inferior to men. Though chastity of women was precious, and women were held in high esteem, the Greeks were later overwhelmed by ego and sexual perversions. Prostitution became a regular practice amongst all classes of Greek society.

3. Roman Civilization:

When Roman Civilization was at the zenith of its ‘glory’, a man even had the right to take the life of his wife. Prostitution and nudity were common amongst the Romans.

4. Egyptian Civilization:

The Egyptian considered women evil and as a sign of a devil.

5. Pre-Islamic Arabia:

Before Islam spread in Arabia, the Arabs looked down upon women and very often when a female child was born, she was buried alive.

2. Islam uplifted women and gave them equality and expects them to maintain their status.

Islam uplifted the status of women and granted them their just rights 1400 years ago. Islam expects women to maintain their status.

Hijaab for men

People usually only discuss ‘hijaab’ in the context of women. However, in the Glorious Qur’an, Allah (swt) first mentions ‘hijaab’ for men before ‘hijaab’ for the women. The Qur’an mentions in Surah Noor:

"Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: and Allah is well acquainted with all that they do."

[Al-Qur’an 24:30]

The moment a man looks at a woman and if any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he should lower his gaze.

Hijaab for women.

The next verse of Surah Noor, says:

" And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands’ fathers, their sons..."

[Al-Qur’an 24:31]

3. Six criteria for Hijaab.

According to Qur’an and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab:

1. Extent:

The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands upto the wrist. If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. Some scholars of Islam insist that the face and the hands are part of the obligatory extent of ‘hijaab’.

All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women.

2. The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure.

3. The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them.

4. The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex.

5. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex.

6. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers’ religions.

4. Hijaab includes conduct and behaviour among other things

Complete ‘hijaab’, besides the six criteria of clothing, also includes the moral conduct, behaviour, attitude and intention of the individual. A person only fulfilling the criteria of ‘hijaab’ of the clothes is observing ‘hijaab’ in a limited sense. ‘Hijaab’ of the clothes should be accompanied by ‘hijaab’ of the eyes, ‘hijaab’ of the heart, ‘hijaab’ of thought and ‘hijaab’ of intention. It also includes the way a person walks, the way a person talks, the way he behaves, etc.

5. Hijaab prevents molestation

The reason why Hijaab is prescribed for women is mentioned in the Qur’an in the following verses of Surah Al-Ahzab:

"O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad); that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful."

[Al-Qur’an 33:59]

The Qur’an says that Hijaab has been prescribed for the women so that they are recognized as modest women and this will also prevent them from being molested.

6. Example of twin sisters

Suppose two sisters who are twins, and who are equally beautiful, walk down the street. One of them is attired in the Islamic hijaab i.e. the complete body is covered, except for the face and the hands up to the wrists. The other sister is wearing western clothes, a mini skirt or shorts. Just around the corner there is a hooligan or ruffian who is waiting for a catch, to tease a girl. Whom will he tease? The girl wearing the Islamic Hijaab or the girl wearing the skirt or the mini? Naturally he will tease the girl wearing the skirt or the mini. Such dresses are an indirect invitation to the opposite sex for teasing and molestation. The Qur’an rightly says that hijaab prevents women from being molested.

7. Capital punishment for the rapists

Under the Islamic shariah, a man convicted of having raped a woman, is given capital punishment. Many are astonished at this ‘harsh’ sentence. Some even say that Islam is a ruthless, barbaric religion! I have asked a simple question to hundreds of non-Muslim men. Suppose, God forbid, someone rapes your wife, your mother or your sister. You are made the judge and the rapist is brought in front of you. What punishment would you give him? All of them said they would put him to death. Some went to the extent of saying they would torture him to death. To them I ask, if someone rapes your wife or your mother you want to put him to death. But if the same crime is committed on somebody else’s wife or daughter you say capital punishment is barbaric. Why should there be double standards?

8. Western society falsely claims to have uplifted women

Western talk of women’s liberalization is nothing but a disguised form of exploitation of her body, degradation of her soul, and deprivation of her honour. Western society claims to have ‘uplifted’ women. On the contrary it has actually degraded them to the status of concubines, mistresses and society butterflies who are mere tools in the hands of pleasure seekers and sex marketeers, hidden behind the colourful screen of ‘art’ and ‘culture’.

9. USA has one of the highest rates of rape

United States of America is supposed to be one of the most advanced countries of the world. It also has one of the highest rates of rape in any country in the world. According to a FBI report, in the year 1990, every day on an average 1756 cases of rape were committed in U.S.A alone. Later another report said that on an average everyday 1900 cases of rapes are committed in USA. The year was not mentioned. May be it was 1992 or 1993. May be the Americans got ‘bolder’ in the following years.

Consider a scenario where the Islamic hijaab is followed in America. Whenever a man looks at a woman and any brazen or unashamed thought comes to his mind, he lowers his gaze. Every woman wears the Islamic hijaab, that is the complete body is covered except the face and the hands upto the wrist. After this if any man commits rape he is given capital punishment. I ask you, in such a scenario, will the rate of rape in America increase, will it remain the same, or will it decrease?

10. Implementation of Islamic Shariah will reduce the rate of rapes

Naturally as soon as Islamic Shariah is implemented positive results will be inevitable. If Islamic Shariah is implemented in any part of the world, whether it is America or Europe, society will breathe easier. Hijaab does not degrade a woman but uplifts a woman and protects her modesty and chastity.
