Research repeatedly shows atheists are 7.8% more intelligent than the religious.

Only 7% of Americas Academy of science and 3% of the UK’s royal Academy are Christian!

Neuroscientists have conducted the most comprehensive brain mapping to date of the cognitive abilities measured by the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS), the most widely used intelligence test in the world.

The results show that the various factors that comprise a high or low IQ score

depend on particular regions of the brain.

The WAIS test is composed of four indices of intelligence, each consisting of several subtests, which together produce a full-scale IQ score. The four indices are the verbal comprehension index, which represents the ability to understand and to produce speech and use language; the perceptual organization index, which involves visual and spatial processing, such as the ability to perceive complex figures; the working memory index, which represents the ability to hold information temporarily in mind (similar to short-term memory); and the processing speed index.

With the exception of processing speed, which appears scattered throughout the brain, the lesion mapping showed that the other three cognitive indices really do depend on specific brain regions.

For example, lesions in the left frontal cortex were associated with lower scores on the verbal comprehension index; lesions in the left frontal and parietal cortex (located behind the frontal lobe) were associated with lower scores on the working memory index; and lesions in the right parietal cortex were associated with lower scores on the perceptual organization index.

The study also revealed a large amount of overlap in the brain regions responsible for verbal comprehension and working memory, which suggests that these two now-separate measures of cognitive ability may actually represent the same type of intelligence, at least as assessed using the WAIS.

It matters not if they are atheist because of this new type of intelligence or get it because they are atheist – it is a totally different and far more efficient process!!

Also please note a meta-analysis by Personality and Social Psychology Review of 63 studies showed a significant negative association between intelligence and religiosity.

Pretty much, at least in terms of social development!

Look at the USA where stupidity appears to be a virtue - at least 50 years behind western Europe!

But that is an illogical deduction. The correlation is not there.

John Lennox is a world-famous Christian convert and utterly BRILLIANT

He studied at the Royal School Armagh, Northern Ireland and was Exhibitioner and Senior Scholar at Emmanuel College, Cambridge University from which he took his MA, MMath and PhD. He worked for many years in the Mathematics Institute at the University of Wales in Cardiff which awarded him a DSc for his research. He also holds an MA and DPhil from Oxford University and an MA in Bioethics from the University of Surrey. He was a Senior Alexander Von Humboldt Fellow at the Universities of Würzburg and Freiburg in Germany.

I'm pretty sure a lot of the most intelligent people are religious too - belief is not a matter of intellect. Trying to score a cheap shot does nobody any favours

This correlation is stupid as the correlation that associates vaccine with autism.

According to 100 Years of Nobel Prize (2005), a review of Nobel prizes awarded between 1901 and 2000, 65.4% of Nobel Prize Laureates, have identified Christianity in its various forms as their religious preference (423 prizes). Overall, Christians have won a total of 78.3% of all the Nobel Prizes in Peace, 72.5% in Chemistry, 65.3% in Physics, 62% in Medicine, 54% in Economics and 49.5% of all Literature awards.

Other numbers:

Jews - over 20% of total Nobel Prizes winners

Atheists, agnostics and freethinkers - 10,5% of total Nobel Prizes winners

Muslims - 0,8% of total Nobel Prizes winners

90% of Nobel prize winners ascribed themselves to a religion, only 10% are freethinkers, atheists or agnostics. Does that mean that non-believers are generally less "achievable" than believers? I think not. Intelligence is ascribed to multiple etiologies. Your inherited genes from your parents, how you were brought, your access to education, your nutrition, and your environment are the "culprits" to the development of your intelligence.

Do you get anything special from lying about other people? What I get from what you are saying is that like all short sighted and dishonest. uneducated people you are attempting to hold people back. Good luck. The world is far too educated for dinosaurs like yourself to still be roaming the world.

The Bible states that God have chosen the foolish one from the world standpoint.

Reference Bible 1Co 1:26

26 For YOU behold his calling of YOU, brothers, that not many wise+ in a fleshly way were called,+ not many powerful,+ not many of noble birth;

27 but God chose the foolish things of the world,+ that he might put the wise men to shame; and God chose the weak things of the world, that he might put the strong things to shame;

28 and God chose the ignoble things of the world and the things looked down upon, the things that are not,+ that he might bring to nothing+ the things that are, 29 in order that no flesh might boast+ in the sight of God.

30 But it is due to him that YOU are in union with Christ Jesus, who has become to us wisdom+ from God, also righteousness+ and sanctification+ and release by ransom.

The creditable evidence of God is all around you, that you fail to see or feel or listen is your choice. You are one of his many creations. The things of this world did not begin for you with ABC's or 123's, they began with mankind's "desires functioning perfect", under development not applicable.

it just so happens that japan is mostly atheist and sub sharan africa is mostly theist... can this be relied upon?

has anyone done a study of iq of theists and atheists in similar populations... pleease post a link to it...

There is a specific reason that those in power have ALWAYS attempted to keep those they want to control ignorant.

As you point out, the more information people have, the easier it is for them to reach rational conclusion, ie: there is no evidence for a god or gods.

well I am a christian and I would bet anything that I am more intelligent than you. You just have to put them down to make your self feel better about your obvious ignorance and arrogance.

I am an ordinary earthling without any special powers or divine powers. Unless you tell me, I, on my own, do not know its meaning. It is only known to those who are intellectually brilliant. I am a novice in this area. I am still learning from the many answers here.
