Question:
Truthfully and honestly in God's name, are you American?
2009-06-09 00:54:50 UTC
(U.S. Citizens only please)

Can I ask some sincere and honest questions for the Americans?

1. Do you have to force yourself to believe your American? Or, does it truly come naturally?

2. Do you think your any bit less than American because of people saying that the U.S. is not America?

and one more please..

3. Will you honestly vouch in God's name, even to the bible that you are truthfully and honestly Americans as God intended?

This whole thing seems very odd to me. I believe that I am an American. But being American means being a mix of things. American isn't one general kind of heritage, like being Irish, or Mexican.

Can I ask some sincere and honest questions for the Americans?

Sure, why not?

1. Do you have to force yourself to believe your American? Or, does it truly come naturally?

No. I am born in the US, therefore I am american. There's nothing more to it.

2. Do you think your any bit less than American because of people saying that the U.S. is not America?

Huh? When did people say that? US=America, how is it not?

3. Will you honestly vouch in God's name, even to the bible that you are truthfully and honestly Americans as God intended?

Just because we are americans, it does not mean that we all believe in god. Some people do, and I respect that. People should have the right to believe in what they want to believe in.

>"1. Do you have to force yourself to believe your American? Or, does it truly come naturally?"<

as per the normal meaning in conventional speech and discussion, I certainly am. ... this statement does not imply that my ancestors were "from here" all the way back, only that what common convention as to what "american" means, would define that I am.

>"2. Do you think your any bit less than American because of people saying that the U.S. is not America?"<

I am unclear on what you mean. there are parts of the geographic continent of "america" that are not part of the US... really it seems like you are playing some screwy semantic games and I am not sure what you are getting at.

>"3. Will you honestly vouch in God's name, even to the bible that you are truthfully and honestly Americans as God intended?"<

what do you mean "as god intended"? that is not a relevant, contetxually meaningful, or coherent thing to say in my perspective.

I honestly could vouch and swear that by the common definition and distinction of what "american" means, I am an american citizen.

I am still not sure where you are going with that. because really it seems to be loading questions with semantic ambiguity where there is not naturally such ambiguity.

if you are using a non-standard meaning for "american" then you should say so.

edit: also, this does not imply I support things done in the past leading up to this point in history, regarding the establishment of this country.

OK; you're sincere and you're honest, but that doesn't help much.

1. I was born in Chicago and live in Virginia. I'm American. All four of my grandparents were born in Poland and became naturalized citizens. They were American. I set out to understand the Constitution of my country and of every state I've lived in. I have also earned being an American.

2. Don't be dense. The United States is American, but North America is not just the U.S. But "United States" has no possessive personal form, so "American" substituted for it in the English imagination before Canada was barely settled.

3. This is not a question but rather an insulting rhetorical coercion that assumes that your myopic view is the measure of all things. And anybody who thinks he fully understands God's intentions should be shot into orbit where he can think about it and not infect anyone else. Too much blood has been shed over such idiocies.

Yes, I'm an American.

No, I don't have to force myself to believe that I'm an American; it's a lot easier to say than "United States Citizen;" that's quite a mouthful.

As far as I can tell, being an American is a binary state; either you are or you aren't. I'm not sure how someone could be a "bit less American". What people say has no bearing on my citizenship. I am a person who was born on the North American continent, in the United States. I doubt Canadians or Mexicans want to call themselves "Americans" because in the general vernacular, the term applies to citizens of the U.S.

I don't swear on the Bible (I'm Jewish), but I'm most definitely an American citizen, born and raised in Texas.

The term "American" has come to mean those of us who live in the U.S. Yes, I know that there is a north american, and a south america. But most people when they use that word are referring to those who live in the U.S.

Having said that.. I don't have to force myself. I think of myself as an American. I don't know or care what people say. Here we say that we are Americans. We are not technically the ONLY Americans. But the name is a nickname for the U.S., and it is what it is. I have no problem with it.

I don't understand you last question. Americans as God intended?? I don't understand what you are asking. Our country was founded 'under God' and I think that because we have as part of our Constitution the idea that our freedoms are given to us by God, that maybe we have a special place in his heart. Next to the Italians, of course. ;-)

1. It comes naturally

2. I never have heard that people say the U.S. is not America. Isn't it the same thing?

3. God never mentioned America in the Bible, so how exactly did God intend for us to be Americans?

1: No. I was born in the US and have lived here all my life. I have no trouble proclaiming myself an American.

2: No. I have no idea what you think these people are actually saying.

3: I will not make such an oath because I do not believe in such an entity. I further do not believe that any deity "intended" for America to be anything. We made it what it is, and must accept both the acclaim for our successes and the blame for our mistakes.

1) I'm born in the United States of America. This makes me American.

2) And who is saying the US is not America? If you are talking continent wise then it is a part of North America with dozens of other countries in Middle and South America as well.

3) Your mistake is in thinking that the USA is a Christian Nation, this is false. We are a nation of citizens under a rule of law who share a common desire for freedom and independence. Religion has NOTHING to do with it.

This question really is one of the most ridiculous ones ever posted here. And that is saying something.

What the hell dude? You do know that before there was 'USA' there were Native Indians occupying this land we call America. All the 'Americans' we know today are immigrants, occupying a piece of land and governing it based on a philosophy and set of rules called the constitution which a few fellas from way back in the day wrote down.

This country is just a piece of land on planet Earth.

I could rant even more about how this country is based on the philosophy of freedom, yet it's history is marred with slavery, suppression of womens rights and mass invasion and killing of the original inhabitants, even today we continue to suppress the rights of other individuals.

Truthfully and honestly in God's name, are you American?

--Nope.

Do you have to force yourself to believe your American?

--It's been forced on me, I've never applied such ideals though.

Does it truly come naturally?

--Patriotic nationalism is hardly a 'natural' adaptation.

Will you honestly vouch in God's name, even to the bible that

you are truthfully and honestly Americans as God intended?

--No, I won't.

I do not need the Bible or your god to know that I am an American and I do know that "as God intended" makes no sense at all.

God intended us to kill a bunch of indians and take their land? What a tool.

God founded a country which was founded on the principal of NOT favoring any specific religion over another? That's kinda weird.

Don't taint a great country set up by brilliant people by bringing your religion into it.

So help me God, I have a passport that says "USA" on it.

I was told that means, "United States of America". Perhaps I'm mistaken.

While all North and South Americans can be considered "American", only those whose nationality are "USA", have the word "America" in their country's name.

It's not "Canada of America", or "Argentina of America". . .no no.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it. lol
