Question:
Atheists: Can you help me brainstorm some ideas for an atheist meetup group?

Religion fills three important human needs: the need for belonging, the need for guidance, and the need for answers. As atheists, it is important for us to study religion so we can apply its benefits to our own lives while avoiding the many drawbacks associated with religion. We may not believe in God or go to church, but that does not mean we must live lonely and meaningless lives.

There aren't any atheist meetup groups in my small southern town. I want to change that. My mission is to:

1) Create a supportive community for atheists
2) Challenge the negative stigma attached to atheism
3) Stimulate the mind and promote critical thinking

Having these meetups once a week, or even just once a month, will help create a sense of community. We can do volunteer work and have charity fundraisers. This will not only boost morale, it will also show our entire community that it is possible to be good without God. To stimulate the mind, we could invite guest speakers to give lectures on relevant topics. We could also watch documentaries or TED talks.

I would love to hear some of your ideas.

Atheism is just the default position. I think it would be a mistake to give it a uniform and a political position. A critical thinking group for people who want to examine aspects of life and existence is a good idea but I don't know why it has to be for Atheists only.

If your life is lonely and meaningless, it's YOUR fault.

I'm an atheist and mine is great.

Atheists do not believe in a god.

Other than that, we're all different.

There is no POINT in having a meetup group.
