Question:
Why do people hate Catholics?
?

So I'm a Catholic, and when I look on Yahoo Answers with questions like this, everyone always says false things about Catholic beliefs and says that's why they disagree with Catholicism.
Some common misconceptions:

Catholics worship Mary / the saints. Which we do not. We worship Jesus & God and revere Mary and the saints. All of our prayers are to Jesus and God, but we will ask the saints and Mary to ask God for things on our behalf. We do not worship them.

Catholic priests are child molesters. Okay. C'mon, people. There are some priests who molest children, but they are not really Catholic - or Christian, for that matter. Not all Catholic priests molest children.

Catholics don't read the Bible / are brainwashed. I read the Bible every night, thank you very much, and every Catholic person I know encourages me to do so. So no. That is blatantly wrong.

Thoughts? And can you put your religion in your source?

Well , I don't dislike all christian or Catholics ( freaky I don't hate anyone at all ;) but I dislike the actions. Catholics like non other try to tell me these things to get me to be one of them, and it gets really annoying. But they are my brothers and sisters none the less. If I were to say no one read the bible it would be because I can tell. Some say that everyone who doesn't believe in Jesus will go to hell when Jesus said the way to get eternal life is to love thy neiboor and fallow the Ten Commandments just look at Luke 10:25-28. And the priest malestor thing to me is a joke, it was even on scary movie 3 or 4 I think? Anyway the people who hate you or anyone else are haters or just have bad expierences

Catholics are a sect of Christianity like Baptists, Protestants...you get the picture.

Christianity is a relationship with Christ and God. A walk that takes a lifetime to almost perfect (none of us are ever perfect but God keeps working us toward it).

My biggest bone of contention with Catholics is the marriage thing: can't marry anyone but a Catholic and their steadfast refusal to believe you can't get to heaven if your scorecard is not full of good-doing check marks.

God wants you to LOVE. Him. Christ, each other. Do EVERYTHING with LOVE in your HEART. Don't think doing it out of duty or obligation is pleasing to Him. When Catholics finally realize that God loves them as if they were the only one, THEN they understand God and Christ and become a fine Catholic!

Is it false that Catholics added these things: papal infallibility, primacy and supremacy of the pope, purgatory, immaculate conception of Mary, Filioque, indulgences and differences in the Eucharist to name a few? All these were added later by Catholics and are not accepted by Orthodox Christians.

Are the Crusades and Inquisition false?

I've heard Catholics strongly supporting the idea that the Orthodox are to blame for the crusaders attacking them....??!!

Why do you twist history?

Is it false that from the ancient patriarchates of Antioch, Alexandria, Rome, Jerusalem and Constantinople only Rome left at the Great Schism? All the others stayed.

You left the Church way back...

I love Catholics! I still go to my grandmother's Catholic church occasionally, even though I am not Christian. I also go to a synagogue occasionally, a mosque every friday, a evangelical Christian church on sundays and a Hindu temple on sunday. (I recently reverted to Hinduism). I believe all paths lead to God and we shouldn't hate anyone because they worship God differently. Christians that say Catholics are not Christian are ignorant and stupid.

I was a brainwashed Catholic for 40 years, and by brainwashed I mean that I had to act and think in "one only way" or I'd be prejudiced by society, school, family & friends (I lived in many countries like Mexico, Panama, Ecuador, Chile & Peru).

And we did worship Virgin Mary! My school was a Marrian School (that means that they are Mary followers), every day we had to pray Hail Mary in mass & as penitence after confession.

Pedophile Priests not being Catholic? . . . WTF!!!! FYI in Ireland, Priest would pass on the Pedophile know-How from one priest to another for 3 generations!!!! That's systematic criminal behaviour! In USA there's like 2000 filed accusations, 1000 proven cases of children molested in Australia by 100 priests since 1994. And why don't we know from Latin America???? . . . . . Because there's extreme poverty there and ignorance and no chance to let the scandal come out to the media.

You can read the whole Bible all you want (I've done it twice in my life), but believing those fables and even trying to prove them . . . . . . that's the proof that you are brainwashed.

BTY! Jesus was a extraordinary human being, just like Gandhi, John Lennon and many many more. But never a God!

I was so BRAINWASHED that I would have defended them (as you do) 20 years ago! But whatever I say it's a waste of time, for you have to figure it out yourself. That's the only way you'll brake the spell.

Can you believe "cristoiglesia"? . . . He can write Bible quotes as long as eternity! USE YOUR OWN WORDS! Not something edited 2,000 years ago in the Ancient Era! "Hombre! . . tu no reconocerías a Cristo, ni aunque te pidiera un aventón!"

I do not hate Catholics.

Most Christians who are not Catholic do not even believe Catholics are "Christians" because the Roman Catholic Church has drifted so far away from what the Bible says. The Bible is the authority, and we must base 100% our Christian beliefs on the Bible. This is God's word. But within the Catholic Church, they put traditions over and above the Bible, and then the Popes keep coming up with "new revelations" (which are false), and the whole thing keeps getting more twisted.

The Roman Catholic Church thinks you get "saved" by attending mass, etc., but this is not what the Bible teaches. The Bible also does not say you should be asking or praying to Mary or any other dead people. This is like idolatry, which is strictly forbidden. The Bible does not say we should be talking to dead people, and that's because dead people CANNOT HEAR US. The Bible does not teach transubstantiation. The Bible does not teach forced celibacy for church workers, such as priests and nuns. The Bible does not say Mary was a virgin her entire life, which explains why Jesus had brothers. The Bible does not say Mary herself was born of a virgin. The whole idea of Purgatory is something the Roman Catholic Church made up, and you will not find that in the Bible. It is fiction.

The Roman Catholic Church has so many things messed up that we would have to call it a false religion. And sadly, most Roman Catholics do not understand what it means to be a genuine born-again Christian. But they sure are "religious."

I am perplexed at how to reach Catholics. They have been so indoctrinated into their own belief system that they cannot see the truth. I had a recent message from a Catholic who explained to me that tradition is just as important as scripture, and he included a number of scriptures to support his position.

But they fail to see how distorted everything becomes when religious tradition TRUMPS what the bible really says. And when the Pope comes out with new a revelation, that revelation also TRUMPS what the bible says.

I have known many Catholics, and most of them are really nice people. And I believe that some of them have a heart for God. But they have such a distorted understanding that I suspect they do not know what it means to be a true Christian.

Hate is too strong a word. My problem with the Catholic Church (and every other cult) is it's wrong, completely wrong. The fantasies are just plain not true. A life devoted to nonsense is pathetic.

On the first point of "revering" Mary/ the saints reverence is often confused for worship.

On the points of Catholic priests not all being child molesters and Catholics not reading the bible and being brainwashed your arguments have three flaws. One is the "no true Scotsman" fallacy in you saying that the priests molesting children who I agree are a minority are "not really Catholic" despite that they accept Jesus as son of GOD and the Vatican's authority.

The other that I do not think has a name is assuming that yours and your peers catholic experience represents everyone even though I know many Catholics including family that have never read the bible never mind finished it.

The final point that you do not touch upon is Christianity as brainwashing. On one last note I will admit I am still in the process of reading the bible so I am not as knowledgeable as I could be myself.

some people just have such empty lives that they need to live vicariously through someone else, and they MAKE UP anything, true or false, which will get someone to pay attention to them.

Those of us who are engaged in contending for our faith are continuously tested for our patience and charity towards others. Often we hear outrageous accusations against our Church, leadership, beliefs and practices that are at least partially untrue and usually just blatant lies based on bigotry and hatred of what Christ and the disciples founded. Sometimes I think we forget that enduring these attacks is something we must do when doing Christ’s work by His example. Jesus said the following:

(Mat 5:39) But I say to you not to resist evil: but if one strike thee on thy right cheek, turn to him also the other:

Jesus was speaking here not of physical attacks but of insults. We are called by His example to endure insults but more than this we are instructed to love them and we are to pray for those who persecute us and His Church. We are called to seek perfection in our love for our enemies.

(Mat 5:43) You have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thy enemy.

(Mat 5:44) But I say to you, Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you:

(Mat 5:45) That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise upon the good, and bad, and raineth upon the just and the unjust.

(Mat 5:46) For if you love them that love you, what reward shall you have? do not even the publicans this?

(Mat 5:47) And if you salute your brethren only, what do you more? do not also the heathens this?

(Mat 5:48) Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect.

Jesus said from the cross when in His greatest agony:

(Luk 23:33) And when they were come to the place which is called Calvary, they crucified him there: and the robbers, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

(Luk 23:34) And Jesus said: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. But they, dividing his garments, cast lots.

We must remember that our battle is not against our fellow men that are suffering from a lack of knowledge and are most often the victims of false teachers who have deceived them into believing that anyone different from what they teach is evil when it is those teachers and false prophets who are the evil ones. They do not recognize that they are doing the work of the great deceiver but believe instead that they are doing God’s will. They have failed to heed the warning:

(Mat 7:15) Beware of false prophets, who come to you in the clothing of sheep, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

But, they are not our enemy but the ones we must show the most charity and the most mercy. We must remember what we are told about our enemy:

(Eph 6:10) Finally, brethren, be strengthened in the Lord and in the might of his power.

(Eph 6:11) Put you on the armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the deceits of the devil.

(Eph 6:12) For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood; but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness in the high places.

(Eph 6:13) Therefore, take unto you the armour of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day and to stand in all things perfect.

(Eph 6:14) Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth and having on the breastplate of justice:

(Eph 6:15) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.

(Eph 6:16) In all things taking the shield of faith, wherewith you may be able to extinguish all the fiery darts of the most wicked one.

(Eph 6:17) And take unto you the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit (which is the word of God).

(Eph 6:18) By all prayer and supplication praying at all times in the spirit: and in the same watching with all instance and supplication for all the saints:

(Eph 6:19) And for me, that speech may be given me, that I may open my mouth with confidence, to make known the mystery of the gospel,

We must remain forever mindful that our efforts can help, with the assistance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit to turn them from their hatred. We can provide them with knowledge and loving example when we offer them the other “cheek” of love, patience and charity. By doing so the Bible tells us the following:

(Pro 25:21) If thy enemy be hungry, give him to eat: if he thirst, give him water to drink:

(Pro 25:22) For thou shalt heap hot coals upon his head, and the Lord will reward thee.

We are to give our enemies the food of love and the water of truth to satisfy their hunger and thirst. It is through our charity and kindness that they will come to Christ and His Church and not through our frustration and consternation for their souls.

While it comes from our flesh to lash out at the attacks and to seek vengeance it is not the way of our Lord. We are instead to do all things in love.

If we fail in our efforts the price is great so we should instead change our anger to love so that their bulwark of false teaching will not withstand the “hot coals” of the truth through love that we provide. We can turn some of them from their desire to serve themselves and come home into the familial relationship that Christ has provided in His Church. The stakes are very high and we must put on a Christ like manner along with our armor of God and that manner is represented truly and substantially but the love we give and not the love we receive. Here is the dangers our opponents face who have rejected His Church:

(Mat 7:21) Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.

(Mat 7:22) Many will say to me in that day: Lord, Lord, have not we prophesied in thy name, and cast out devils in thy name, and done many miracles in thy name?

(Mat 7:23) And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

We must be a conduit to lead them to the rock of true and full faith which is contained in His Church:

(Mat 7:24) Every one therefore that heareth these my words, and doth them, shall be likened to a wise man that built his house upon a rock,

(Mat 7:25) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it fell not, for it was founded on a rock.

(Mat 7:26) And every one that heareth these my words and doth them not, shall be like a foolish man that built his house upon the sand,

(Mat 7:27) And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and they beat upon that house, and it fell, and great was the fall thereof.

We must accept our suffering through insults and lies so that others will receive the truth. Jesus prepared us for our mission by His prophetic statement that also encourages us in its veracity:

(Joh 15:18) If the world hate you, know ye that it hath hated me before you.

We must never forget what He said to us all and what the priest tells us at the end of every Mass which is "Go in peace to love and serve the Lord" which reflects the following:

(Mar 16:15) And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world and preach the gospel to every creature.

We must remain strong and not seduced by our flesh into the following:

(Rom 12:19) Revenge not yourselves, my dearly beloved; but give place unto wrath, for it is written: Revenge is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.

With Love in Christ

Fr. Joseph
