Question:
Bush ----->>>> "Atheist are not Citizens of America" - What Your Say On This?
2008-01-22 15:03:31 UTC
Bush's exact words

"I don't know that atheists should be regarded as citizens, nor should they be regarded as patriotic. This is one nation under God."

We should all know by now that it's unlikely that an atheist will ever be elected president in America

Well, I do believe that it is unlikely that an athiest will be elected to the Presidency anytime soon because most citizens in America prefer to have a religious (Christian) person in the position. Athiests tend to have a negative connotation associated with them and many people ignorantly believe that athiests do not follow a moral code of ethics. Bigotry is alive and it will never be completely stamped out so long as humanity exists.

"George Bush on atheism and patriotism"

It gives the context of the quote and everything. He said it while being interviewed by american atheist press.

As an atheist you can probably figure out what I think about that statement.

Write your legislative leadership seeking Articles of Impeachment for bush/cheney NOW!

*executive signing statements that allow the circumvention of various U.S. Laws.

* Misleading us about the Threat from Iraq

* Illegal Wiretapping of American Citizens

* Holding American Citizens without formal charges and without legal representation.

* Illegally using government funds for domestic political propaganda related to the administration's Medicare package.

* High Crimes and Misdemeanors.

As U.S. Citizens it is our solemn duty to initiate this act of justice. Our democracy depends on U.S. Citizens fulfilling our responsibility to protect the U.S. Constitution.

I'm sure most of us (not just yahoo land but all of us!) can agree that this action is way overdue. It is also absolutely necessary in order to check unfetter presidential power. Tipping the scale and destroying the fragile balance of power that has kept this nation strong, vibrant, and viable.

Write to your congressional representative, demand this action!

IMPEACH bush/cheney NOW!!!

That was Bush senior, not the current president.

Anyway, yeah it is a f*cked up thing to say, and to think. Oh well, what do you expect from a man that is clearly brain dead.

It wouldn't surprise me that had such a thing been said in England, there would have been public outraged.

I've clipped off toenails that have more intelligence than either one of the Bush presidents.

What they say carries little weight with intelligent people.

Less than one year and the nightmare is over! Woo hoo!!!

As a UK citizen and observer, I was more amazed at how little reaction it got from the US Christians. Many prefer to think that an atheist 'must be lying about it'...which speaks volumes...

Imagine if he had said 'Jews'...or 'Christians'? In modern times, I mean.

The irony is I can GUARANTEE that most atheists would be up in arms if it was said about Jews or Christians as they value secularism.

Bush Senior didn't think that Atheists should be considered citizens, and Bush Junior didn't think that witchcraft should be considered a religion.

I guess sometimes bigotry just runs in the family...

he is pathetic, and as everyone knows by his own example any time he goes off script you can see exactly how moronic he really is. he is an embarrassment to America and a danger to anyone he has influence over. I think an atheist president would be perfect if you want separation of church and state there's no better way to get it

Yup, it was Bush Sr. who said that, though.

Atheists are the most mistrusted minority in America. 52% of the population would not vote for a fully-qualified atheist candidate. Sad, really.

To be clear, that was George HW Bush -- Bush senior.

I'm bothered less by the quote and more by the failure of people to react to the quote. There was no outrage from the religious moderates and liberals who claim to stand for plurality and tolerance.

Just for comparison, imagine if he had said that about Jews or Muslims -- both smaller minorities than atheists.
2008-01-22 15:19:10 UTC
That would be Bush Senior. He got bashed for it.

Anyway, he is just being a bigot he is.

Well this is the same president who said "Wicca is not a religion" and "I'd like to shake the hand of the man who lost his hand...."

I don't consider him to be highly intelligent.

I am sure my atheist husband who served the army in war time and is now a disabled vet would disagree with that statement.
