Question:
I am a Christian yet believe in some Astrology?
2009-11-01 13:42:29 UTC
I'm a Christian, but as I've learned more about astrology and horoscopes, I am starting to believe some of it. I don't believe in the daily horoscopes, or that the horoscopes will tell me how my life will be, what will happen next, who I will marry etc. I believe only God knows that. I am starting to believe that depending on the month, day, time you were born, can affect your personality, your social and work life, who your friends are, and who your attracted to. Is this OK? I do not consider astrology a part of my religious beliefs.

My Christian grandfather describes astrology as "God's way of showing us His plan for our lives." And indeed there are quite a few passages in your bible that support that idea.

You're wise to ignore "horoscopes" as they're only a small portion of astrology, and thus not able to be accurate to the individual. :) For those who have not explored the subject, horoscopes are not all there is to astrology. Horoscopes only deal with a tiny part, the Sun, because that fits best in a small space and is easiest to look up. Astrology does NOT try to fit everyone into 12 boxes, and far from being purposely vague, most of you would be surprised by its complexity. A full astrological chart is based on the date, place and exact time of birth and you have a minimum of 7 planets, 12 signs and 12 houses, and the geometric relationships between them, as well as transits and progressions. Actual astrology is so complex that no one else will have the exact same chart as you do for millions of years.

Contrary to popular belief, it has never been "debunked" by science because the ones trying to debunk it stop at the newspaper columns and never explore the subject in its entirety. In fact, most of the arguments used against it show a total and utter lack of understanding of what astrology actually is and what it actually does. (We know all about the two different zodiacs, we know about the Precession of Equinoxes, the geocentricity is because we're born on Earth *not* because we don't acknowledge the Sun as the center of the Solar system, there is no 13th sign because zodiac signs are *not* the same thing as the constellations bearing the same name, etc.) And we also count among our number several doctorates and other highly-educated people who learned it so they could disprove it and found they were unable to.

Astrologers will differ on the hows and whys of astrology. I can only speak for myself. The stars do not make anything happen to you, they're only reflecting what is already happening via synchronicity. A good analogy is that a clock striking noon doesn't make you eat lunch, but it does make it a lot more likely than lunch will be had. I do not believe that astrology can predict specific events, only archetypal themes that will be in play. A particular aspect can play out in an infinite number of ways, but it can not "just mean anything," it will stick to the archetypal themes of the planets, signs, houses and aspects involved. Many psychological concepts, such as the midlife crisis, have an astrological correlate.

So in closing, astrology is not about "fortune-telling" or denying your belief in God-given free will. The chart shows potentials and themes, not "fate." It is not about "star-worship" or demonic influences; astrology is a neutral tool that can be used by people of any religion or no religion. In the modern era, it's much more akin to psychology and self-analysis than anything else.

While I hold no belief in astrology, and while most Christian writers have held that it is spiritually dangerous, I don't think that believing in astrology is always sinful. Four hundred years ago virtually everyone believed in astrology. Now we know better.

I doubt highly that "depending on the month, day, time you were born, can affect your personality" Personality has as much to do With nurture than nature, and what would a planets position over the earth have any bearing on your personality?

that said...biblically there are points of astrology. Such as the Magi "seeing his star in the east" There may be something about certain events being written in the stars, but unless your a God incarnate I doubt your birth was foretold in the stars.

I believe the most astrology can do is offer a 'placebo effect': if you grow up thinking "I'm a Libra. I'm supposed to be artistic," you'll probably lean toward the arts because, at least subconsciously, you think you should.

Other than that, the taxonomy of horoscopes are so general that they could apply to most people in most situations. When I realistically look at my horoscope, I find that I don't match 50% of what a Leo is supposed to be.

Go figure.

The really great thing about astrology is that it allows an instant assessment of a person's intellectual worth.

I'm not at all surprised that you also believe in Christianity.

"I am a Christian yet believe in some Astrology?"

So many answers...

1. I'm fairly sure that your bibel says you're not allowed to do that stuff.

2. If you're one step weird in believing in imaginary space entities there's not a big leap in believing in all sortsa weird stuff.

3. Astrology is a scam...

Well most astrologers use the stars it to determine the future. The bible shows that God's power far surpasses such practices. It is a type of divination or magic. Why not leave it alone and focus on the mind of Christ who can also affect your personality. I'd leave it alone as it can lead to other things.

Hey Kayla, sounds like a healthy relationship, you keep your religion and are able to use the stars to navigate through life. What better map than the one made at the beginning of time?

Well, now we know you believe that funny stuff too.

No, you can't be a 'good' Christian and believe in 'fortune telling' things.

The bible is against it big time!

No. It's not OK. And it IS part of your religious beliefs whether you know it or not. You are putting faith in something besides God. The first commandment tells us not to do that. It's very dangerous. It's already pulling you away from faith in God and you don't even realize it. I was involved in it before becoming a Christian many years ago and it caused trouble in my life. I strongly urge you to get out of it before it's too late.

Nevertheless, it is astrology that you describe and the Bible recommends staying away from such endeavors. Thanks for asking.
