Or were the artists and composers of the time just doing what their patrons requested, and the patrons (many of whom would have belonged to churches/cathedrals) in turn just doing what was socially acceptable to get them favor and display their power?

For example, Da Vinci was fascinated by rational inquiry and produced some amazing drawings of human proportions and anatomy that were way ahead of his time... he also painted some religious works like the Last Supper and the Virgin of the Rocks. What was his driving incentive? To glorify God or to produce great paintings?

It's hard to think of James Joyce without his constant references to religion. Religion is a myth and so can be used by creative people to help produce ideas. I think any really good idea that has stuck around as long as Christianity or any other religion, must speak to some human truth that can utilized by artists, even if the story is not literally true.

Da Vinci wasn't so inspired by "god" in fact many scholars think that he was a non-believer because of his many run-ins with the church. It is true however that the church was, particularly during the Baroque period as an antidote to the Lutheran rebellion, the largest patron of the arts. Obviously, they had the money to pay the great artists of the day so in the end, money is the great motivator. Those artists would still have produced great works of art but who knows what the subject matter might have been.

Well, some of them might actually have been inspired by it personally as well.

However, if they had NOT possessed those beliefs, they probably would have found something else to get inspired by.
