Question:
Why are there more atheists in this category then people who are actually religious?
2012-05-18 09:12:45 UTC
When atheism isn't a religion
Atheists answer - Because its a public site and we have the right to answer if we choose.
Then why do you put religious people down in this category?

Atheists, agnostics most knowledgeable about religion, survey says

Report says nonbelievers know more, on average, about religion than most faithful. Jews and Mormons also score high on the U.S. Religious Knowledge Survey.

September 28, 2010 By Mitchell Landsberg, Los Angeles Times

If you want to know about God, you might want to talk to an atheist.

Heresy? Perhaps. But a survey that measured Americans' knowledge of religion found that atheists and agnostics knew more, on average, than followers of most major faiths. In fact, the gaps in knowledge among some of the faithful may give new meaning to the term "blind faith."

Atheism is a religious and spiritual stance, so atheists have just as much right to be here as you. Do you also believe that only doctors or sick people should participate in the health care forum, even though all people have a right to health care knowledge? That would be absurd. Likewise restricting atheists from this forum is equally absurd. What you have apparently missed is that the majority of those putting other people down here are teenage "trolls" getting their jollies. If they offend you in a mean spirited way, report them.

None talk about God as much as the ones who say they don't believe. This is a place where atheists *most of them* can be rude, mouthy and get brave behind a computer screen. The chances of getting knocked out for being disrespectul is bar none, therefore, they can type whatever ignorant thought crosses their mind without thinking twice. It's funny actually. But if you limit yourself to only the Bible, you are ignorant. But if you fail to see the similarities between ancient culture, myths, ect and the stories of the Bible you are equally ignorant and limited in your knowledge. If you can't see outside of your own box if your an atheist and ponder the fact that their might be a God, you are just as helpless as the man who believes in God, and refutes all other ancient cultures without reading up and studying them. If you are stuck in your beliefs as an atheist you are just as bad as a "christian" who is stuck in their beliefs-denouncing all others and celebrating Christmas&Easter(Pagan holidays) DO YOUR RESEARCH...on Everything, before you open your mouth or start typing. You sound stupid and closed minded. And realize, that at the end of the day you still don't know everything. Organized Religion is a scam but a personal relationship with God is something completley different.Though In my opinion, all sources point to a divine Creator.

"Why are there more atheists in this category then people who are actually religious?"

There are not. That is just a claim which you are making.

You did not present any evidence to support your assertion - so it is discarded without need for debate.

"why do you put religious people down in this category?"

I do not, I treat everyone with courtesy and respect. I see no reason I should not defend myself however. Why do you think I should not be willing to stand up to people who post fake "questions", which are merely rants or intended as defamation and anti-atheist propaganda?

I have the right to freedom of speech in this country, and that means while you are free to say what you wish -- I am still free to say that I think you are wrong.

As an atheist, I am hear to answer questions about atheism. My simple goal is to help people understand other views and therefore become more understanding and respectful. I do not generally answer questions about religion or insult religious people. I stick to answering questions about atheism with the hope that opening an honest dialogue will help people to be more accepting of each other.

Are you suggesting that certain people aren't allowed to discuss certain topics on a forum?

EDIT: You are asking a leading question on the second part -- "why do you put religious people down?" Not all atheists put people down; a lot simply share their opinion which you and other theists will likely disagree with. I personally have zero intentions of mocking anyone's belief(s) - just disagreement and discussion, as do a lot of others on this site; but all the same there are theists and atheists guilty of doing what you describe. The religion is a topic, and anyone who wants to discuss it should be allowed to be here. Not to mention, this section is called Religion & Spirituality; and there are plenty of atheists who are spiritual in their own way.

I think what we see here is that YOU have hostility toward atheists because they believe something different, and it makes YOU angry, so you are attempting to victimize yourself. A lot of what you are trying to pass as fact in this post is libelous. And now you call people "assholes," which only lessens your already slim credibility.

Monotheism isn't a religion either. But like atheism, it's still a personal position regarding the existence of deity, which means both topics fall under the large category of "religion & spirituality".

This is a place to ask and answer questions that fall into the subject of religion and/or spirituality. And that's what I'm doing. Really, what part of this don't you grasp?

Your user name says it all.

>>Then why do you put religious people down in this category?

Because a lot of them are, like yourself, idiots who post loaded questions and deserve what's coming to them. Others are just too stupid to distinguish debate from personal attack, or too stupid to realize why posting a terribly loaded and ignorant question might provoke a stern reaction.

I think it's where religious people come to admit they're atheist.

Also is not a category for religious people its to discuss religion.

I see both sides putting each h other down but I don't agree with either one.

Who said that someone has to be religious in order to find the subject interesting? Who made that rule?

And BTW, it's is presumptuous of you to attempt to answer for others. Let them speak for themselves.

What I find most annoying about this site is not the demographics of it, but the people who whine about other users instead of posting the types of questions for which the site was intended.
Do you want fries with that?

Christians are out either preaching or doing charity work or just getting on with their lives in general. While Atheist worship Richard Dawkins and believe they should spend their lives ranting against religion online.

We put religious people down because they also have the right to answer, but that doesn't mean that we have to agree with them. And the majority of the time what they have to say is stupid, ignorant or just brainlessly repeating dogma or bible verse.
2012-05-18 09:14:26 UTC
Because this is the place to discuss religion. And atheists tend to be very knowledgeable on religion. Plus the internet gives us a place to gather since we don't have weekly meetings or anything.

Oh look... God is still make-believe.

(Hint: the fact that I don't believe in something that you do isn't putting YOU down, it's putting your belief down. If Christians can love the sinner but hate the sin, then I can respect the believer but hate the belief.)

it would seem to partly be the theists fault, if they could actually prove their god exists to an atheist, then there wouldn't be atheists.

how many atheists have you converted today?

clearly not enough, so stop complaining and be the solution for once...
