Where did this originate from? Has there been any proof (concrete) of holy water's powers? Has there been an explanation as to why/how it repels evil? Has anyone seen holy water work for any purpose? What was used before holy water? Can anyone give me an explanation how these powers in holy water get there?

Sorry so many questions.
Thank you for the intelligent answers I receive.

Holy water is simply water (tap?) that has been blessed, most usually by a priest or father.

I'm a Christian, but not Catholic... we don't really make a big deal of Holy Water at our church... Also, I've never heard of it "burning" anyone!!

During the times of John the Baptizer water symbolized purification. John's baptism was symbolic of the 'washing away of sins,' something water was incapable of doing until Jesus allowed Himself to be Baptized in the River Jordan. He Who is sinless entered the waters to be washed of sin thereby imbuing water with the ability to wash away sin when used ritualistically for that purpose.

Today Holy Water is water that has been blessed by a Priest, clergyman or even a believer.

At least for me, the phrase 'God is the rain' is a truth. Rain is the first form in which water is presented to us (in it's purest form). The power of something being holy remains within a person's faith. I don't think that anyone used anything other than water since water has been on earth even before us.

You probably wont like my answer but here it comes anyway. Water has been used in Paganism for years and years as a means of purfication and a symbol of this. Washing for ritual purity was a big part of the ancient Egyptian religion. It was just borrowed from that as were a lot of other things.

Holy water is just plain water that has been consecrated by a priest.

Personally, I think its nonsense. No offence. I saw this half-filled 100-plus bottle at my cousin's place, it was labelled 'Holy-water'. O.o

They are Catholics.

I'll would love to know what others have to say.
