My best friend is converting to Judaism and marrying a Jewish man. I want to send them a Hannukah card but I want to home make it. I know about the Menorrah but are there any other symbols I can use to put on the card? also can someone give me a background to Hannukah so I can put some feeling and knowledge into my card? also what kind of verse should I use? I was thinking of just "Seasons Greetings"

Where do I begin :O)

First, you would need a 9 candle-branch Menorah and not the traditional 7 branch Menorah.

Secondly, this year Hannukah is going to fall inbetween: Sunset, December 4 to Sunset, December 12 (The Jewish day begins at sunset and not at the morning light.)

Thirdly, here is a link that you can find the ends and outs of the rededication of the Holy temple by the Maccabees

If you have any additional questions, please feel free to ask.

Enjoy and Good-luck!

The link below is a good place to learn about the holiday.

Happy Hanukkah is an appropriate greeting.

It is also called the "festival of lights"

Happy festival

Happy festival of lights

Happy holiday

those are all appropriate

I hope this helped.

Shalom :)

Interesting trivia tidbit: Read the portion about the explanation of the dreidel game and the meaning of the Hebrew letters on the top. They omitted a small detail. IN Israel only, the dreidels have the Hebrew letters Nun, Gimel, Hay and Pay to represent Nes Gadol Hayah Poh, meaning "A great miracle happened HERE". A small, but significant difference! :)

I think that you are so sweet for wanting to make the card yourself; what a lovely thing to do!

Mama_pjama gives a great answer, so I would echo what she says. You can write 'Happy Chanukah' in the card, that will be fine.

And if for any reason you end up buying a Chanukah card, I'm sure that would be fine too; it's the thought that counts!

Your friend is lucky to have such an understanding mate; I'm sure she will be really touched by your gesture :)

Shalom
