As an Anglican attended a Roman Catholic seminary, I was very surprised to hear about the changes from Vatican II. Some were also accepted by Anglicans, e.g., moving the altar away from wall so the priest faces the congregation, and so on. What surprised me was even though it was so long ago, how so many pre-Vatican II ideas are still out there.

I found that the RC seminarians, and we Anglicans took basically the exact same courses. Anglicans had fewer electives, as we had to take some Anglican history courses (which were open to RC's as well). But, at least 98% of our theology is the same. Why then, is there this big RC/Protestant divide? Not that Anglicans are exactly Protestant, but it seems that many perceptions about the RC church are completely incorrect.

From my perspective, Vatican II was the Reformation of the RC church - just a bit later than the rest of us. They missed priests being able to marry, and are behind on female priests ('way behind!), but otherwise, there are few theological differences anymore. Some structural ones - like the centralized authority under the Pope. Vatican II made tremendous, and positive changes. It is a pity so many people, Roman Catholic and otherwise, completely missed it.

Unfortunately, Vatican II rejected the Catholic Dogma that you have to ACTUALLY be Catholic to be saved. My mother for example has so imbibed this heresy that she thinks Lutherans go to Heaven. I will counter this modernist heresy by quoting infallible Catholic Dogma.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Sess. 8, Nov. 22, 1439, ex cathedra: “Whoever wishes to be saved, needs above all to hold the Catholic faith; unless each one preserves this whole and inviolate, he will without a doubt perish in eternity.”

Pope Leo X, Fifth Lateran Council, Session 11, Dec. 19, 1516, ex cathedra: “For, regulars and seculars, prelates and subjects, exempt and non‐exempt, belong to the one universal Church, outside of which no one at all is saved, and they all have one Lord and one faith.”

These days Benedict XVI praises the "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification" which says that the doctrinal condemnations of the infallible Council of Trent no longer apply, that is that the Lutherans are no longer in heretics for believing in justification by faith alone. The most specific departure from tradition is Vatican II's teaching on the Jews. The Council of Florence dogmatically defined that any individual who has a view contrary to the Catholic Church’s teaching on Our Lord Jesus Christ or the Trinity, or any one of the truths about Our Lord or the Trinity, is rejected by God.

Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, Bull Cantate Domino, 1442, ex cathedra: “…the holy Roman Church, founded on the words of our Lord and Savior, firmly believes, professes and preaches one true God, almighty, immutable and eternal, Father, Son and Holy Spirit… Therefore it [the Holy Roman Church] condemns, rejects, anathematizes and declares to be outside the Body of Christ, which is the Church, whoever holds opposing or contrary views.” This is an infallible dogmatic definition of the Catholic Church on individuals who have a view on Our Lord Jesus Christ or the Holy Trinity that is contrary to that of the Church (e.g., Jews, Muslims, etc.). The Council of Florence solemnly defines that whoever has a view contrary to the Church’s teaching on Our Lord and the Trinity (e.g., the Jews) is condemned and rejected! Note: the Council is not merely saying that the view contrary to Our Lord is rejected, but that the individual (e.g., the Jew) is rejected. This dogma is rooted in the truth that Our Lord specifically revealed in Sacred Scripture. Matthew 10:33- “But he that shall deny me before men, I will also deny before my Father who is in heaven.” The word “deny” means to reject or to repudiate. He who denies Our Lord is rejected by Him. But in its Decree on Non-Christian religions, Vatican II taught just the opposite.

Vatican II Declaration, Nostra Aetate (#4): “Although the Church is the new people of God, the Jews should not be presented as rejected or cursed by God, as if such views followed from the holy scriptures.”
