Question:
Jehovah’s Witnesses: How many hours of door-to-door magazine distribution are required to get eternal life?
Hello Me!

Within the Jehovah’s Witnesses, I would expect that there are some who do NOT do this at all, some who do it only occasionally, and some who spend more than twenty hours per week doing it. Correct?

Assuming no physical disability that would prevent door-to-door ministry, if a JW did not pass out Watchtower literature at stranger’s homes, would he/she have any hope of eternal life?

I’m asking this because some Christians prefer “relational evangelism,” where they reach out to people already known in their personal lives (instead of “cold-calling” on strangers). Would that method be sufficient to get eternal life? If not, how many hours of door-to-door literature distribution does a Jehovah’s Witness need in order to get eternal life? What is the work-load that Jehovah requires?

Our salvation does not depent on the number of hours we spend in preaching. BUt preaching is a life-saving work. Please read the following verses...

ROmans 10:13-15

13 For “everyone who calls on the name of Jehovah will be saved.” 14 However, how will they call on him in whom they have not put faith? How, in turn, will they put faith in him of whom they have not heard? How, in turn, will they hear without someone to preach? 15 How, in turn, will they preach unless they have been sent forth? Just as it is written: “How comely are the feet of those who declare good news of good things!”

1 Tim 4:16

Pay constant attention to yourself and to your teaching. Stay by these things, for by doing this you will save both yourself and those who listen to you.

With the above verses, i hope you've seen the importance of preaching. This is the reason why Jesus commanded his followers to preach (Mat 24:14, 28:19-20) We love Jehovah and we want to follow Jesus that is why we preach. We also love the people in our neighborhood that is why we share to them the message of the bible.

According to the Hitchhiker's Guide, 42.

I cannot begin to tell you the number of magazines I have left over at the end of the month, despite my trying to share them in my ministry.

Good thing our ministry is about saving lives by teaching God's kingdom in the hands of Jesus Christ and not magazine distribution. Thank you for the definition of "Relational Evangelism," because it points out yet another difference between Jehovah's Witnesses and the churches of Christendom.

Jesus said to make disciples of the people of the world. Would not going to people you know personally EXCLUDE the group Jesus told us to seek? And wouldn't it be more than likely that they've ALREADY accepted Christ as savior? How can a person make a disciple of someone who is already a disciple? That would be a spiritual "gimme," no effort, no muss, no fuss. Since Jesus said following him would be hard, then it makes sense that our ministries should reflect the difficulty Jesus said we'd face. Otherwise, and it's fairly evident to me, I MUST be doing something wrong.

The truth is that we will be going door-to-door until Jehovah himself taps us on the shoulder and says "Enough." And even then, it will only be by the grace of Jehovah that we will attain eternal life.

So the REAL answer (and not the silly one) is: No amount of preaching can ever guarantee eternal life.

But it'll get us darned close!

It isn't a matter of how many hours you do, or how much preaching you do that will ensure salvation. It's all about heart condition. If a person's heart condition isn't right & they did 100 hours a month, it would make no difference. Jehovah doesn't look for hours or works in a person... it's their motivation he looks at.

If a person knows the truth about God's future blessings & about the coming great day of Jehovah & how those not repenting & changing their ways will be annihilated at Armageddon... then his/her heart should be motivated to warn people & spread the message.

For example, if you lived at the bottom of a hill & I knew that a huge truck was heading downhill towards your home with you at home, I should be motivated to warn you of the impending catastrophe so that your life would be saved (whether you are a stranger to me or not).

If a Christian isn't motivated to do this on behalf of his fellow human, if he had a care-free attitude as to whether the person would be saved or died at Armageddon.... then his heart condition is not right.

True Christians are motivated in their heart to preach at every opportunity

Jehovah's Witnesses report all of their hours to the Watchtower to keep track of. You can go right on watchtower.org and see their statistics for 2009. Jehovah's Witnesses believe that they will have two chances to get to live on a Paradise Earth. This life they're living now really doesn't mean anything when you think about it, so there really is no reason that they spend countless hours walking the streets, unless they are living during Armageddon. The belief is that after Armageddon they will be resurrected and have the chance to follow Jesus again, and if they don't, then they'll die forever. Now if they're living (the first time) during Armageddon and they die, then that's it, no more being resurrected (hardly seems fair, doesn't it?). But either way is fine for a Jehovah's Witness, because there is no hell in their belief structure, no punishment for anything they've done.

To answer the question, the hours mean absolutely nothing to them, just a way for the Watchtower to keep a close tally on their followers, make sure people are going out distributing and selling their material, and to punish if necessary (for not doing service time).

As you already know, there is no such hourly requirement for our field ministry work for everlasting life. Everlasting life is a gift from God.......it's not something that anyone can earn. But our preaching assignment is a commandment from Jesus as stated in Matthew 28:19, 20....and it's NOT an optional one. It's a simple matter of common sense. Jesus commands his true followers to do something, and those who do it can certainly count on being rewarded for their obedience and faithfulness, while those who know they should do it and purposely don't do it can count on not being looked upon favorably by Christ or by Jehovah God (who holds in his hands their prospects for eternal life).

Those who don't engage in the ministry for no legitimate reason choose to put themselves in a position where they're telling Jehovah they won't do what is required of them. So they know full well that they shouldn't expect to be rewarded with everlasting life for obedience if they're not being obedient.

And stop putting your petty slant on our work. We are to share the Bible's message with people (of warning and of hope), and our magazines help build up an appreciation with people of the necessity of putting faith in God, in Christ Jesus, and in the Bible itself. The real message we preach is from the Bible.

God requires that we engage in the work. There is no specific number of hours required for it. We need to do it regularly, zealously, and with a heart full of love for God and for our fellow man.

Your question is based on fallacy. Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe or teach that everlasting life can be earned.

Aside from requiring that members serve in the Watchtower ministry, I don’t think there is a specific requirement for the numbers of hours they put in. If a JW in good health refused to participate, then according to Watchtower theology, he could not get eternal life. So some level of work is required, but there is no specific number of hours. However, I’d guess that those who put in 20+ hours per week are respected more within their Kingdom Halls.

You do whatever you are capable of doing. God does not compare one to another and we do not either. Some Witnesses have circumstances that may prevent them from getting out, younger ones may be able to get out a lot as do others. God accepts what ever you do as long as you do it whole soul.

Matthew 24:13  But he that has endured to the end is the one that will be saved.

What Does God Require of Us?

. To become a friend of God, you must obtain a good knowledge of Bible truth (1 Timothy 2:3, 4), put faith in the things you have learned (Hebrews 11:6), repent of your sins (Acts 17:30, 31), and turn around in your course of life. (Acts 3:19) Then your love for God should move you to dedicate yourself to him. This means that in a personal, private prayer you tell him that you are giving yourself to him to do his will.—Matthew 16:24; 22:37.

You can't *earn* your salvation.

However:

"Not everyone saying to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but the one doing the will of my Father who is in the heavens will." Matthew 7:21

"He who does the will of God remains forever." 1 John 2:17

So it is up to us to do God's will. It is not about hours or magazines.
