Question:
Why do SOME atheists attack Christians/Christian religion?

I understand that you can plead the case that SOME Christians try to force their faith on you, so you fight back.Understandable, but SOME atheists force their "faith" onto others as much as SOME Christians might. What's the point of unprovoked comments like these?

“Christians, so slow sometimes.”

“there are millions of good books out there and if you read a few maybe you wouldn't base your life on the teachings of a bored sheperd.”

Keep in mind that the previous guy is criticizing the Christian’s intelligence, but he also spells “shepherd” incorrectly.

“i wouldn't Hypothetically pick my nose, for any God that told me to. screw Gods lol”

And my personal favorite:

“It is stupid. There is a negative correlation between intelligence and Christiianity. Also, education and Christianity.”

Why are SOME atheists so bothered by something that they dont even believe in?Why do so many atheistic questions on R&S revolve around Christianity? Is it becauce you cannot deny its truth?

..Broad brushed question, and broad brushed answers. Some religious people respond, including atheists, Some attack, including Christians, Some are shocked, some are right, some are wrong, but no one hit the points contingent. Whether there is a God or not in your view, there is civil rights and liberties here that should be protected, including free speech. Whether the rights of religious people were observed, certainly the character of some was taken for granted in both directions, and if the guy simply wanted a fight, he might have gotten one from someone out there, perhaps more than he bargained for, so to post the sign was a bit risky, but hey, it's his life. The police might have simply wanted to avoid that, and they were right to be preemptive in that. The final comment, if I didn't like something about the society I lived in I might take action against it, but there is no way one will outweigh the other in this broad contention (God, no God)... Rather than duke it out, either publicly, or privately, why not simply show a better life? Live the peace you claim.

"Menopause is punishment for sin." – fundie THAT IS STATING A CHRISTIAN BELIEF. IT IS NOT AN ATTACK!

This is where you totally went off the deep end! Are you actually saying that Christian women do not go into menopause??? Are you actually saying that all women are sinners and that's why they go through menopause??? As a woman who recently went through years of menopause, I take great offense at that. What kind of belief is that? And you wonder why SOME atheists get critical?

Edit: Okay, I'm Jewish. I've read the Tanakh; I've never read the Old Testament or the New Testament. I do not take everything I read literally and I do not take the Adam and Eve story literally but as a metaphor. You must realize that not every person takes everything it says in the Bible literally.

It's just that the Christians are the main group here, so atheists who are immature enough to want to pick a fight pick a fight with Christians. Also, most of the atheists on this board are from the US, and in the US Christianity happens to be the dominant religion. Some people come here with a LOT of baggage. Doesn't justify their outbursts of course, but it explains them nevertheless. And sure, some of the atheists ranting the most against Christianity are the ones who are doubting their position. Just like vice versa. Doesn't mean that one is right and the other is wrong.

Why ask the question when you answered it? it is not Hinduism or Judaism that is trying to legislate their preferences on most of us. It is not the assumption of the society where a plurality of us live that good normal people are automatically Sikhs. It is not Muslims who knock on our doors on Saturday mornings telling us we will go to hell. It's not Buddhists shooting ob/gyns and shouting frothing hatred at people picking up low cost contraception at the local Planned Parenthood. We didn't have "In Zoroaster we Trust" plastered over our currency because of McCarthyite paranoia nor did we have "under Confucius" added to a perfectly inclusive pledge for the same reason. We don't have well-funded organized efforts trying to force all students to perform Navajo dances in schools or post the Wiccan rede at every courthouse. We don't have to schedule our week and year around Hindu dogma and we aren't told we can't buy beer on Fridays because the Muslims have that special time for gathering at the mosque.

I kind of agree with you.

I just wish that people could believe what they personally believe without having to defend it all the time.

I don't think it is right for Christians or Atheists; or any other religion to force their opinions on others. Religion is a very personal matter and it shouldn't be broadcasted around on the internet what you believe.

I'd consider myself an Atheist and I don't believe bad things about christianity at all.

Don't let people provoke you.. smile :-), and move on. Noone in this life is worth hating or making you angry. You can hold resentment for years and the other person is the one living their life without a care about what you are feeling.

You can build up anger towards someone else as much as you like, but it will be you who is the only one hurting.

Life is too short.

It's the same reason you defend being a christian. You strongly believe in it so you defend it. You don't notice how absent mindedly christians attack athiests. YOU are attacking athiests by asking this question. An athiest could ask "Why don't christians believe in the truth?" and you would be offended. You're asking the same thing from the other side.

I'm bitter about religion. Maybe the atheists most vocally against Christianity feel wronged by Christianity and consider it harmful or just plain silly to waste time in. I don't think there's anything wrong with stating your opinion. It's barely possible to force anything on anyone that you have no control over. The only people that can force religion on others are parents forcing it on to their children...and even then the child can grow up and make his own religious decision.

I never said or wrote any of those things and I do not force people unless they start arguing with me about it and mostly my friends are the ones that argue with me about this things.

Maybe if christians stop throwing their religions at us maybe we will leave you christians all alone and we are not the only ones that leave comments like that.

First, I think on average, atheists are more tolerant of Christians than Christians are of Atheists, but that's just my observation.

To answer your question: Why do some of us attack Christianity? Lots of reasons. These reasons do not necessarily apply to all atheists, but they are a big part in my opinion.

1. Discriminated Minority - We live in a country where being atheist are considered immoral or deviant by most (due to Christianity mostly). For example, a majority of Americans said they would not vote for an atheist for president, and atheists were also polled as the "least-trusted" minority. To your average atheist, who views himself as a good person, a good American, and tries to live a good life, this is offensive and off-putting. When you are discriminated against, you often feel the need to lash out. Christians do it constantly, act like a repressed minority because they aren't able to bypass the constitutional requirement of seperation of church and state (sometimes they do).

This is made worse by the fact that many Christians are taught to witness and try to bring people to their religion, and when confronted by this, we atheists feel like we are being talked down to, we believe strongly in what we believe just like Christians believe strongly...(the difference is we have evidence, but thats not the point here).

Also, the bible condemns us to hell, and we think thats rubbish, but its disconcerting to live in a country, having a rational mind, and know that most of these people, by default, assume we are going to burn in a pit of fire for eternity based on their viewpoints that we see no merit in....kinda hard to have respect for someone if they think thats what you deserved...thats really sad to me. Christians have social power and dominate politics, and atheists have to live in a christian world that is unkind to us. Considering this, we are pretty damn level headed and forgiving despite this.

2. We want to make the world a better place - Just as some Christians want to save our souls, we want the world to be a better place and for people to reach their potential. We see religion as a barrier to social, scientific, academic progress. It hinders thought and new ideas to us. We want the world to be the best it can be, and so we try to "enlighten" those in hopes that we can change minds, and sometimes we can...I've made a few atheists in my life who became or were previously great lovers. And honestly, on a more selfish basic level, its nice to have people like you sometimes.

3. We find believing in things through faith as alarming. We see faith as nothing more but unjustified belief in something without any evidence or even despite of evidence otherwise. Faith is little more than wanting to believe something. Christians scoff at other faiths, and would scoff at someone worshiping santa clause and having other irrational beliefs. Atheists scoff at all of that.
2008-06-03 12:59:44 UTC
Because theophiles attacked us first. giving us a perfect just war excuse since no atheist or maltheist ever did a thing to provoke theophile attack.
2008-06-03 12:54:56 UTC
Well...I couldn't legally run for public office when I lived in Texas. Stop crap like that, get you faith out of the pledge and off the money, just generally keep in out of public policy period, and you will stop most of the reaction you get.

But you can't....and then you guys yell that you are being oppressed.

Do Christians act any differently? Atheists act that way because they are people just like Christians. No better and no worse.

Why do so many Christian questions on R&S revolve around atheists? Is it because you cannot deny it's truth?

It annoys me that anybody prescribes to ancient belief systems, even as they continue to be unraveled and exposed by our continuing advancement of science. And as a result, religion wants to push their way into the already problematic educational system and have their supernatural ideas taught.

This is reality. Empirical evidence and peer-reviewed science cannot be substituted by absurd notions that are clearly nothing more than creations of humans that didn't understand the world around them, and feared death.

for every anti-christian example I can list 100 anti-atheist examples.

Let me quote one of the bible's stolen quotes - Do unto others as they do unto you.

You see, Christians have about 1,700 years of violence and oppression to make up for - we are just getting started.

I don't know, some people are just idiots. they shouldn't attack Christians. Christians shouldn't attack atheists. Not all atheists go around attacking other people just because of their beliefs. I completely agree with the answerer before me. what she said proves so much. =]

It's because some Christians aren't content with simple evangelizing - they are determined to codify their religion in law and shove it down the throats of everyone, believer and non-believer alike.

Kind of like you're doing with this post.

2008-06-03 12:51:06 UTC
Ah, you snuck your attack in at the end. That's why atheists attack Christians sometimes. Turnabout is fair play, you see. We're not bothered by Christianity as much as we are by those who call themselves Christians. And we're not here because we cannot deny it's truth, we're here because you cannot accept it's falsity, and we're just trying to open your eyes.

Ask atheists what they think of pagans. Go ahead. And then ask them WHY their opinion of pagans is different than of Christians.

You are right, of course, but you have to admit, not all of you are playing with a full deck.

Look at these:

"Belief in evolution sends thousands to hell every day." - fundie

"There was no room on the ark for the dinosaurs so they drowned." - fundie

"It never rained before the flood that is why no one believed Noah." - fundie

"Schizophrenia is demon possession." - fundie

"Menopause is punishment for sin." - fundie

"Yes God created all animals. But He knew that they {dinosaurs} would hurt people, and allowed them to die during the flood." - fundie

"Science has yet to disprove anything that God has said in His Word. If science says anything different, you'd best question the scientist that said it. God's word is truth. Scientists lie." = fundie

"God grew my nail back despite the surgeon's education, surgical expertise, and his protest!" - fundie

"Satan caused Adam and Eve to sin, therefore corrupting paradise. Thus decay began. Disease is a direct result of that original sin." - FUNDIE

"It isn't so dumb. Many are Satan influenced.

Tobacco: Emphysema, heart disease, lung cancer

Alcohol: Liver disease, alcohol poisoning,

Drugs: cancers, brain damage, HIV, Aids

homosexuality: Aids, HIV" - fundie

"there is a ton of proof.

-the bible

"Satan invented Evolution....it's not true" - fundie

"When the 'rapture' happens, y'all will be talking about this same subject while you're being burned and beaten by Satan for eternity while Christians will be having the time of the rest of their lives in Heaven. I guess that's what you hoped for." - fundie

"No, even if you were a human vegetable strapped to your hospital bed for your entire existence you would still have original sin." - fundie

"read "How to know God exists- scientific proof of God" by Ray Comfort." -fundie

"This age of the earth thing is pointless. Our God can create things aged." - fundie

"As a Christian believer I do think the earth is between 6,000 - 10,000 years old and i also believe that the dinosaurs did exist but at the times of Adam and Eve to Noah and they all died during the great flood of the earth." - fundie

"nope. personaly i don't believe dinosaurs exzisted.

it's just some freaking scientists's business, make believe...........thing.

read your bible." - fundie

"Yes, they {dinosaurs}were in the garden with adam and eve, They are described in Job 40" - fundie

"For all you people who say it is plate tectonics, who do you think controls them, duh!!!! I agree with the asker and think that California is first in line for a one way ticket to hell!!" - ignorant fundie who claims California will have an earthquake because of gay marriage.

"It obviously was made for humans, more specifically for Jesus to live and die on." - fundie answer to: "If the Earth is here by accident or some Boom process, why is everything on Earth to human scale?"

You see, there is what God says and there is what God says.

Men have been deceived since the garden of Eden, which I would assume you most likely believe not to be true as well.

Just know this that all you say and do is recorded in heaven and you will give account of it when you are knelling before God on judgment day.

I will pray the Lord open your eyes and heart to his truth, not the world's. " -fundie

"In answer to your question, atheists simply do not WANT to believe in God. They do not want to be held morally accountable to a higher Authority. Jesus said it like this, He said that people refuse to come to Him "because their deeds are evil!" - hate filled ignorant fundie

"Jesus said He GAVE His life for us, because we are sinners heading to eternal hell, and could not be saved from eternal hell without Jesus dying for our sins and rising again. We must believe this to be saved." - ignorant fundie (LMAO!!)

"That just mean you are vulnerable to the tricks of satan.

Psalm 14:1

The fool (foolish) hath said in his heart "There is no God."...." - fundie

"Because they like their sins and don't like the thought of being accountable to God." - fundie
