You can be lost once you are saved - there is a warning to this effect in nearly every book of the New Testament.

Hebrews 10:26 For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27 but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries.

2 Peter 2:20 For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the latter end is worse for them than the beginning. 21 For it would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than having known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered to them.

To the comment at the top about "twisting scriptures", these appear very plain and need no "twisting". However, to state that I John 5:13 says "once saved always saved" is the very definition of passage twisting..... sorry about that. Please look at it again, particularly in the context of verse 7-8, the "things I have written" to testify of salvation.

As far as what can be done to lose salvation, one need only read in I John 1 about walking in darkness (sin) or chapter 2 about not obeying the commandments. How about the passage above me, Hebrews 10:26? The writer says in verse 25 what sin he is speaking of......

How can you "lose" what you did nothing to gain? God gives salvation to His people as a gift, God does not take back His gifts. The Holy Spirit was given to us to seal us for salvation, to preserve us until the end. If you would lose your salvation, then you would have to be saved again, this is unbiblical. Christ died once for the sins of His people, that sacrifice was sufficient to save, redeem and forgive all His people, completely, for eternity.

Eph 1:13 in whom also you, hearing the Word of Truth, the gospel of your salvation, in whom also believing you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,

Eph 1:14 who is an earnest of our inheritance, to the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

Eph 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed to the day of redemption.

Heb 9:26 since He must often have suffered from the foundation of the world. But now once for all, at the completion of the ages, He has been manifested for putting away of sin through the sacrifice of Himself.

Heb 10:10 by which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

If you believe you can lose your salvation, you must believe there is some sin you commit which brings this about, that would be a sin not covered by the blood. What sin would that be that Christ did not die for?

Ok

Let's break this down.

A man professes faith in Jesus Christ and walks the walk and then (for the sake of the extreme argument) becomes an Atheist. There are real world examples of this scenario.

So we are not even talking about works per se but faith alone. In other words, we have a person who did not commit some "unforgivable or willful sin" but it is clear that they believed and no longer believe.

Now if you want to include the backslider we can for thoroughness and we can all clearly see that some folk who claim to be saved just can't seem to get it together. They continue in wanton sin or they do not recognize sin as sin because of a false understanding of acceptance vs mercy.

(License/Gnostic vs Spirit and Truth)

So we expend great emotion and energy evaluating apparent "fallen" people to be correct about their condition and the division (also a sin) and the judgement (also a sin) and the casting of stumbling blocks (also a sin) defines our communion in the Christian fellowship under Christ's Lordship with our brethren.

OK. Hang in there. Here is the truth.

One side says that the person was saved and fell. The other side says that if they departed they were never of us to start with (1John 2). The two sides of the doctrinal argument stand firm and throw rocks at each other trying to decide who is correct about the man. They both miss the point. No matter how the man became lost, he is in fact lost and both sides should be ministering to him instead of arguing about him.

If we all focused on the lost more than being right many more would come to Christ. I have a very firm position on eternal security that I know is scriptural but see no need to share it in the context of this spiritual discussion and revelation.

Let me ask you this.

What did you DO to be saved?

The answer should be: nothing.

Ephesians 2:8-9 says "For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast."

If it is by grace you have been saved, you have done nothing to earn or deserve salvation in the first place. It is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.

What could you do then to lose your salvation?

Just a word of caution however. Use your gift wisely.

To all who know the true Gospel of Jesus, which is once saved always saved - cudos!

To the others try studying some basic linguistics. There is no need for me to repeat all the good discusions others have done.

Don't get confused by the ones who have perverted God's word to try imply you can ever loose your salvation. They are taking God's word out of context because they are linguistically incompetent. To say that a person, especially God would intentionally contradict Himself is beyond ignorance.

The facts are that God said that savlation is a gift and it's free from any kind of works. Therefore, you must proceed with that precept if you are going to justly interpret someone's words. If someone has established that they support the constitution of the United States and you hear them say that we need to abolish the legal system. Do you assume that they are saying they no longer believe in the law.

It would be foolish to do so and competely in accurate. It is more like that such an individual is upset with the way the constitution has been erroded and that they believe the present legal system is corrupt and needs to be abolished.

To think otherwise would open up written language to be interpreted any way that any one wanted to. It would sink written language into a state of having no meaning any longer. Even more so it would be to imply that God is literat incompetent. Since God is suppose to be perfect, these false teachers would bring him down to a state of imcomptance.

All of God's word has to be harmonious if you are going to believe in the inerrant word of God. Every scripture those false teachers use can be proven to be interpreted in error. There are many authors who have written books on this, so there is not enough room or time for me to display all of that research.

Suffice it to say that any doctrine that even one scripture contradicts, is in fact in error. But let's consider briefly one of the scriptures so badly perverted by the false teachers, which is Hebrews 10:26-31. No where is the word hell mentioned. There is no reference here to "the lake of fire," "Gehenna," "hell," "unquenchable fire," "eternal torment," or any terms commonly associated with eternal condemnation. And yet these false teachers marrily go off on there way trying to promote a false teaching that does not even reference the thing they are trying to promote.

It really boils down to these people have not actually studied the Bible for what it says but rather have gone to the Bible in ignorance and have tried to make it say what it does not.

I find these people most disgusting. At least the mormons, muslims and other religions have invented their own books to justify their belief systems. At least there is some diginity in that. But to willfully pervert and twist someone's words, it's just plain disgusting.

These false teachers need some education to offset theri literate incompentancy. Even if you choose to not agree with what is written in the Bible, you at least will show that you have some literate competance. As apposed to twisting the Bible.

In the end God has already explained why so many false teachers, don't understand the true Gospel of Jesus. It's because the preaching of the Gospel is foolishness to those who don't believe. A gospel of works, is something that most people can believe, therefore common sense should tell us that the true Gospel should be something that eveyone might find difficult to believe. Now a Gospel of pure Grace, in which all that is required is to just believe; that kind of love would be hard to believe. Which only makes the true Gospel of Jesus all the more wonderful.

Blessed be the one true God, whose love is without measure. Blessed be His name forever and ever - Amen!

Someone wrote: "Those below that twist Bible verses and make them say things that they don't say, can't answer one question: if I can lose my salvation, what do I do (or fail to do) to lose my salvation?"

OK I'll bite: Suppose you (or a "saved believer") later in life decide that they no longer believed in either a personal God or a life after death. And they decided to live in a homosexual relationship and was unrepentant on his death bed. How did I do?

OH! I jusr realized you already answered this question. You claim now that this person was never "saved" to begin with. OH, how convenient!

Sorry no matter what ANYONE says about this topic, the "believer" will NEVER admit he could possibly be wrong. Must be nice to be able to not only talk to God but have Him answer too.

This type of arrogance is unrivaled.

The first answerer stated that 1 John 5:13 was "proof".

1 John 5:13 "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

This reference certainly does not say that salvation is fixed and can not be lost! That is definitely not proving such a thing. I believe that a person can lose his/her salvation and I believe that the Apostle Paul wrote about such events in the New Testament. Have a wonderful week.

Thank You,

Sorry, but you can't just go get saved and then live a wicked life in sin with no regrets just because you 'got saved' Of course you can lose your salvation in Jesus!! What if I went and got saved, then went on a murderous killing spree, killing and stealing and doing harm wherever I could, with no remorse... Am I gonna make it scot-free just because some man on earth said I was saved for life? hahaha

Regardless of what you or others believe or say, I wouldn't bet on it. Why take the risk...

If one is truly saved then no, salvation cannot be lost.

There are those that think they are saved, boast of such things, yet there is no evidence of the spiritual event taking place,,,,,just by the way they live their life. One that is saved lives in the Lord, and they no longer live in sin......Discern the differences, which I'm sure you've done.....

It is important to know Who God is to answer this question. God is ALL-KNOWING. So. Would an all-knowing God save someone He knows won't be sticking around? Does He get a kick out of playing yo-yo with people's salvation? You're saved you're lost you're saved you're lost!! Up and down and up and down like a yo-yo.. How sad a picture of God is that?

Of course He doesn't!

God saves those whom He knows full well and has placed them in His plan of Redemption. To do otherwise would make God an idiot who doesn't know how to save those who will stay on His team. Let's not make God an imbecile!!

What about those who fall away you ask?

1John 2:19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

Hello Jared W.

I am Catholic and by our beliefs, yes, you can lose Salvation by committing certain mortal sins (major sins, one of which is murder) . In a way, Protestants feel the same way except for the semantics.

Protestant will say you never had Salvation since your acceptance and following of Christ's ways was never genuine because your continued sinful ways and life.

Catholics will say your mortal sin causes you to lose your salvation. The thing is, again, the reason the sin takes it away is because the sin shows you either never truly accepted Christ and His ways and teachings or you stopped accepting Christ by moving away from Him and His ways.

I will add to this, both faiths believe you can gain your salvation back by genuinely reaffirming your acceptance of Christ and living out your life as a follower of Christ should.

Catholics add a couple of other stipulations such as the receiving of The Sacrament Of Last Rights, Recently changed to The Sacrament Of Healing, at or after death. In the case of the Sacrament not being given for reasons beyond any one's control, the salvation question is between the person and God who is all powerful and not bound by any rules or laws be they scriptural or man made.

Regards,

Lenny.

NOTE TO CHRIS :

You can lose your salvation by turning your life away from Christ in ways such as committing murder and other sins like hating and slandering God, His ways and His people among other sins and not repenting.

You asked for concrete ways, you got them. I also left a note to you about your ignorant answer to Bruce's question about purgatory.

I don't think you ever really KNOW if you're saved until you're in heaven. So - no - I don't believe in once saved always saved. I think that we have to have faith in God but that we must also show God that we believe in Him by following Christ's example and doing good works for our fellowmen.

We always have our free agency and can choose to turn away from God at any time. Even if you believe in God today, if you change your mind tomorrow, that would change everything.

Welcome to one of the questions that has split up the church. I belive that you can lose your salvation. I will find verses and post them in an edit.

EDIT

2 Peter 2: 20-21

If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them

2 Peter 3:17

Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men and fall from your secure position.

2 Timothy 2:11-13

Here is a trustworthy saying:

If we died with him,

we will also live with him;

if we endure,

we will also reign with him.

If we disown him,

he will also disown us;

if we are faithless,

he will remain faithful,

for he cannot disown himself.

Ezekiel 18: 24

But if a righteous man turns from his righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked man does, will he live? None of the righteous things he has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness he is guilty of and because of the sins he has committed, he will die.

I think that about covers it.

Yeah I am save to. It just seems like I'm fight so many issues in my life it some times makes me feel like the worst person in the world. Complaining, gossip, anger, lust, and a few more. Sometimes I just do not know. I understand that I am saved but why so many battles and mistakes?
2008-01-22 19:16:41 UTC
Ooops!!! Once saved always saved??!! You cannot be more wrong!!

Matt 24:13 - He that has endured to the end will be saved.....Hallo!!! Enduring continuously to the end - that's ongoing mate. Salvation must be constantly sought and worked at!

I believe once saved always saved. Everyone sins and makes mistakes...It's the human way unfortunately. However, Jesus died for our sins...the goal is to know this, learn from what you've done wrong and move on. You should ask for forgiveness but if your saved...you ask for it- not by some routine, but by speaking with GOD in your heart and through prayer. I could never be catholic- why do I need to confess my sins to another sinner? Makes no sense to me.

2008-01-22 19:19:13 UTC
No, you're not saved by the way! Salvation is like a garden, you must work at it every minute of your days. It's never acquired. Since we're all humans, we make mistakes over and over, which that we need to repent and get pardon. And we fall over and over...We're not saved once and for all... Think, we all still have some jealousy, greed, etc...

Take care.

NO! you cant loose your salvation but you can fall away and put yourself in bad standings with GOD & JESUS and you dont want the because he says "what father loves his child and want chasen him " so you know theres a spiritual whipping coming and thoses are never good
2008-01-22 19:15:55 UTC
one cannot lose salvation. one can recieve salvation and not be certain of said salvation. but it is beyond certain that one cannot be plucked from the hand of God.

we come to God by faith and repentance, and according to paul we walk the the spiritual life by the same. to trust and obey is to reveal the will of God in your life.

God loved us enough to save us as we are, but loves us too much to let us remain as we are. if you are spiritually stagnant, then you don't know the Lord, or you're resisting Him. either way, judgement will come against you for your sake. trust me, trouble is a friend in disguise. when you're able to look it in the face and still praise God, then you truly have a token of salvation.

if a person could lose salvation, Jesus would have to keep climbing up the cross to die for that lost individual who keeps repenting. No, once saved always saved... Jesus Christ never will scale that tree again, and His grace is sufficient for thee... thank God for it.

35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 36As it is written:

"For your sake we face death all day long;

we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered."[a] 37No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[b] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Is that like being once shaved always shaved? That statement is equivalent to the erroneous and dangerous doctrine of 'once saved always saved'. Salvation can be lost.
2008-01-22 19:15:39 UTC
From my point of view the first answer is the best so far. Until you die, you're never really "saved" (given a ticket to heaven). The path of temptation can always lead one stray from the path of righteousness, but when you die, if you've truely accepted Christ as your savior and have not done any but of the worst crimes to humanity, then I think you are saved. (for example an alcoholic can still be saved, a mass murderer is going to hell.)

At least that is more Christian answer I can think of from my point of view.

It is impossible to lose salvation (1 John 5:13).

If someone appears saved (comes to church, participates in ministry) but are gone from faith later, the Bible says they were never saved in the first place (1 John 2:19).

This is what the Bible says. People may feel this and feel that, but feelings don't make truth. Only the Bible is the truth.

A being called Lucifer is described as falling from heaven in Isaiah 14:12:

"How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!" Isaiah 14:12 (KJV)

So if a being who is _already_ in heaven can lose his salvation then why not you, or me, or anyone?
