Question:
Atheists - How many copies of you, do you think there are?

Evolution states that the creation of life came from a random series of events. You could put a mathematical figure onto that.

If the statistical possibility of planet similar to Earth occurring, was (A) and the possibility of life occurring on a planet like Earth was (B). Then the chance of life on a similar planet would be (A x B).

If the chance of life occurring exactly as it does on Earth on one of those similar planets is (C), (with the same people and countries etc.) then the chance of planets occurring exactly like us is (A x B x C).

Within infinity, then that mathematical statistical figure (A x B x C ) should occur over and over to infinity. Therefore there should be exact copies of you over and over to infinity. Like looking through a tunnel of mirrors.

What do you think?

It's an interesting mental exercise but I see a few problems with it.

1) The Universe is finite. It is expanding, and therefore finite. You can not posit an infinity of other worlds (Which would theoretically posit an infinity of worlds identical to this one as well).

2) Because the earth is the only instance we have of complex life developing (scientists today suspect a few others we know may hold simple life forms), it is impossible for us to evaluate the probability of B. For all we know, earth could be an incredibly unlikely freak event not reproduced anywhere else.

So to answer your question. I don't know. All we do know is we have this one little blue planet right here in the middle of a lot of nowhere in particular.

"Evolution states that the creation of life came from a random series of events"

wrong #1. the rest should be good, I haven't even read past that yet.

TOE makes no statement of the creation of life. Period.

Ok I read the rest. You've described infinity quite well. That was a surprise actually. And if the universe is infinite then it is absolutely true there are an infinite number of copies of me.

but that is the power of infinity, a mathematical concept. atheism and evolution have nothing to do with it.

Random:

adj.

1. Having no specific pattern, purpose, or objective: random movements. See synonyms at chance.

2. Mathematics & Statistics. Of or relating to a type of circumstance or event that is described by a probability distribution.

3. Of or relating to an event in which all outcomes are equally likely, as in the testing of a blood sample for the presence of a substance.

at random

1. Without a governing design, method, or purpose; unsystematically: chose a card at random from the deck.

There is no good evidence that the universe is infinite or even large enough for the probability for the existence of an identical Earth to be any where near a probability of 1 or even .0001.

Lets see your math on estimates of the magnitudes of A, B, and C. Then perhaps your estimate of the number of, say, electrons in the known universe. Keeping these numbers totally abstract is what is leading you down the primrose path.

Stop trying to sound like you know what you're talking about, you'll just hurt yourself. Whatever is going on with the fundamentals of the universe is far to complex and amazing for any simple human or belief system to know

Sure. Totally possible. But I'm the lucky one of us ;-)

Plus there's also a cute little mini-me over here getting green beans all over her high chair...

Oh yea, I believe in an infinite universe !

"Evolution states that the creation of life came from a random series of events."

Nope, try again.

Evolution says that allele frequencies change from one generation to the next.

The origin of life is abiogenesis, and has nothing to do with evolution.

In short, fail.

If the universe is infinitely populated with galaxies, solar systems, and planets, sure, makes sense to me.

Only if there is an infinite number of Earth-like planets in the universe. I have no reason to believe that there are. Thanks for playing.

as you said such a thing would be astronomically unlikely, statistically impossible in a universe with a mere few sextillion stars (approx.)

Anyone who says they know the fundamentals of the universe are damn fools, whether it be evolution or spiritual wise.
