Atheist field day waiting to happen?

From a Christian to you, I present: Genesis 5.

This is the written account of Adam’s family line.

When God created mankind, he made them in the likeness of God.
He created them male and female and blessed them. And he named them “Mankind” when they were created.

When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth. After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived a total of 930 years, and then he died.

When Seth had lived 105 years, he became the father of Enosh. After he became the father of Enosh, Seth lived 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Seth lived a total of 912 years, and then he died.

When Enosh had lived 90 years, he became the father of Kenan. After he became the father of Kenan, Enosh lived 815 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enosh lived a total of 905 years, and then he died.

When Kenan had lived 70 years, he became the father of Mahalalel. After he became the father of Mahalalel, Kenan lived 840 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Kenan lived a total of 910 years, and then he died.

When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he became the father of Jared. After he became the father of Jared, Mahalalel lived 830 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Mahalalel lived a total of 895 years, and then he died.

When Jared had lived 162 years, he became the father of Enoch. After he became the father of Enoch, Jared lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Jared lived a total of 962 years, and then he died.

When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Enoch lived a total of 365 years. Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. After he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Methuselah lived a total of 969 years, and then he died.

When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. He named him Noah and said, “He will comfort us in the labor and painful toil of our hands caused by the ground the Lord has cursed.” After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 years and had other sons and daughters. Altogether, Lamech lived a total of 777 years, and then he died.

After Noah was 500 years old, he became the father of Shem, Ham and Japheth.

I once met a guy who told me that he had been reading the bible. When I asked long he had been reading it, he replied; "for two weeks" You may have read the bible by now for more than two weeks but you do not understand the concept nor much else about it. It is not history, but to learn who what and why about the bible one has to dig into real history.

Much work has already been done regarding who was Adam, and at this time it does appear that he was a Pharaoh; Adam was part of his name and also 'Amen' was part of his name. He probably dictated Genesis to his scribes. He did have a son which the bible calls Seth and he also had another name, his real name Sesotrius.

Those very old men whom you referred to, those you think lived over 900 years, etc. Well there is an answer for that and it is really quiet easy to understand when one is thinking. Now put on your thinking cap. They really were Egyptians, and at that time their year was about the same as our present months, regarding time/days. Therefore, Adam really lived approx 77 yrs 6 months Methuselah lived approx. 80 yrs 9 months.

Now let's get to the begats. Adam would have been about 10 yrs 9 months old when he begat Seth, and younger, perhaps a year or so when he begat Cain and Able. All of the other men who begat sons were also very young at that time; children. So how did that occur?

Well, young princes were married off to a selected bride at very young ages, so that they could be sure to carry on the lineage. The chosen bride would be old enough to produce a baby. She would be several years or more older than the young husband. After the wedding, the bride would be taken to her young husband's father and he would impregnate her, or the honor might fall to an uncle or another very close older relative. This way the young prince could get his family started without delay.

This is the written account of Adam’s family line.

- Written at least 4000 years after the fact and entirely made up.

I have never seen anything besides the "noah's ark" idea put out to discredit the religion.

- You have obviously never read anything other than fundie captions. Try reading something intelligent.

Between trolling and insults, do any of you really give a damn about objectivity?

- How about intelligence, WHO wrote down that lineage. Absolutely nothing was written down before 560 BCE. Who was it that knew, not just through stories over the camp fire, but knew who those people were. Also, ALL of genesis was plagiarized from the Sumerian tablets, except those things that were made up, like that lineage.

Now, why didn't you think of this earlier?

- Because it was more monumentally stupid than that magic ark.

You apparently haven't been here very long if you think this issue has never been brought up.

We like to pick on the Ark story because it's got animals, and animals are more fun than really, really old guys.

Of course you're a Christian, nudge nudge wink wink.

I've read tonnes of explanations for this....like really man, in for a penny, in for a pound....if you believe in the god of Abraham, then you believe anything is possible with that god's will....

And yes, one would *think* it was an atheist field day, but other's have trotted it out so often it just isn't fun to play with anymore.

"This is the written account of Adam’s family line."

Not written by anyone alive at the time and not supported by any evidence at all. They didn't have birth and death certificates in those days. Why should anyone believe any of it?

As an atheist.... let me assure you that Genesis chapters 1 through 4 offer plenty to make clear to any logical and educated person that the Bible is not the literal truth of much of anything.

The Bible says a man lived to be 969 years old. That's enough to discredit the entire thing.

Yahoo Answers is for questions only, not for a what appears to be an attempt at riling athiests at how old the bible claims some people to be.

Thank you for sharing. You might also enjoy Hesiod's Theogony.

(ll. 1-25) From the Heliconian Muses let us begin to sing, who hold the great and holy mount of Helicon, and dance on soft feet about the deep-blue spring and the altar of the almighty son of Cronos, and, when they have washed their tender bodies in Permessus or in the Horse's Spring or Olmeius, make their fair, lovely dances upon highest Helicon and move with vigorous feet. Thence they arise and go abroad by night, veiled in thick mist, and utter their song with lovely voice, praising Zeus the aegis- holder and queenly Hera of Argos who walks on golden sandals and the daughter of Zeus the aegis-holder bright-eyed Athene, and Phoebus Apollo, and Artemis who delights in arrows, and Poseidon the earth-holder who shakes the earth, and reverend Themis and quick-glancing (1) Aphrodite, and Hebe with the crown of gold, and fair Dione, Leto, Iapetus, and Cronos the crafty counsellor, Eos and great Helius and bright Selene, Earth too, and great Oceanus, and dark Night, and the holy race of all the other deathless ones that are for ever. And one day they taught Hesiod glorious song while he was shepherding his lambs under holy Helicon, and this word first the goddesses said to me -- the Muses of Olympus, daughters of Zeus who holds the aegis:

(ll. 26-28) `Shepherds of the wilderness, wretched things of shame, mere bellies, we know how to speak many false things as though they were true; but we know, when we will, to utter true things.'

(ll. 29-35) So said the ready-voiced daughters of great Zeus, and they plucked and gave me a rod, a shoot of sturdy laurel, a marvellous thing, and breathed into me a divine voice to celebrate things that shall be and things there were aforetime; and they bade me sing of the race of the blessed gods that are eternally, but ever to sing of themselves both first and last. But why all this about oak or stone? (2)

(ll. 36-52) Come thou, let us begin with the Muses who gladden the great spirit of their father Zeus in Olympus with their songs, telling of things that are and that shall be and that were aforetime with consenting voice. Unwearying flows the sweet sound from their lips, and the house of their father Zeus the loud-thunderer is glad at the lily-like voice of the goddesses as it spread abroad, and the peaks of snowy Olympus resound, and the homes of the immortals. And they uttering their immortal voice, celebrate in song first of all the reverend race of the gods from the beginning, those whom Earth and wide Heaven begot, and the gods sprung of these, givers of good things. Then, next, the goddesses sing of Zeus, the father of gods and men, as they begin and end their strain, how much he is the most excellent among the gods and supreme in power. And again, they chant the race of men and strong giants, and gladden the heart of Zeus within Olympus, -- the Olympian Muses, daughters of Zeus the aegis-holder.

to be honest the bible has been around for a lot longer than you, and will continue to be around for a lot longer than you. @Greg W you cant really say educated when a lot of the people that have studied the bible went to some of the best uni's in the world while you probably went to the local community college.
