Question:
Did God lie, and Satan tell the truth?

In the Adam and Eve story, God told Adam not to eat from the forbidden tree "Lest you die that same day." Satan(the serpent) tells Eve that they will not die, but become knowledgeable and be able to distinguish good from evil.

Adam and Eve didn't die that day but they did become knowledgeable of their nakedness. Can we get some perspective on the supposedly infallible "Word of God?"

That's exactly right, but it's fun to watch literalists fall all over themselves trying to prove that God wasn't lying and the serpent was. God did say "in the day you eat of it you shall die," not "you will become mortal and die in a few centuries," and the word translated as "die" is the same word used for physical death in other parts of the Bible. The usual excuses don't hold much water.

BTW, the interpretation that the serpent was really Satan came about long after the story was written.

Neither. The Bible states that the world was created in 6 24-hour days, 10, 000 years ago. Science states that the universe was created 14 *billion* years ago. The Bible states a whole lot of contradictory and wrong things (like pi is about 3 horrible rounding, even by ancient world... the Babylonians calculated pi to about 3.141 centuries before the Bible, or even Judaism was created). Also, given that the Bible is the only proof we have of the Christan God existing, and science has a plethora of evidence for each theory, your question can really only be hypothetical. But I agree with you. It seems that Satan has done more for us than God ever has, or ever will (I don't hear Satan killing every baby on the earth in a global flood... or sending down his son who is himself to be nailed to some sticks).

I've been saying that for a long time, sort of, I keep asking if we're sure God isn't evil and not Lucifer, because wars are always written in favor of the victors, like WW2 for example, if Hitler would have won, he would be the good guy and the Allies would have been the evil ones, is this not the same with God and Lucifer?, God won when Lucifer tried to overthrow him so history recorded God as the "good guy" and Lucifer the bad, I guess we can't know for sure since we can't hear Lucifer's side of the story. And no I don't believe in God.

Genesis 2:16-17 "The LORD God commanded the man, saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely; 17 but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.”

The word "day" (yom) doesn't always mean a 24- hour day. For one "day" (yom) is as a thousand years (Psalm 90:4, 2 Peter 3:8) Adam did die within a "day" in this sense. Further, Adam did begin to die physically the very moment he sinned. (Romans 5:12), he also died spiritually the exact instant he sinned (Ephesians 2:1 ). So Adam died in several ways, any of which would fulfill the pronouncement of God (in Genesis 2:17). I would suggest to you that you read the Scripture references I posted in my answer along with the answer itself, they will help clarify and point out your mishandling and misinterpretation of Scripture.

What I find interesting is when a truthful answer is given by someone they get more thumbs down that anyone else. I suppose that means the Atheists hate the truth.

God never lies and Satan is the author of deception.

The bible I have (NIV) doesn't say that God told them they would die that same day. It says Gen 2:17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.

That is how the serpent deceived Eve. The serpent knew that man couldn't live in the Garden of Eden ( Eden means presence of God) if they gained the knowledge of good and evil. So not only could they not live in the Garden they could never eat of the tree of life, which God also planted. So just like man today the serpent deceived them into thinking they know better than God. Thank God for Jesus.

Physical Death is separation from the body. Spiritual Death is separation from God. They were put out of the garden, the place that they dwelt where the LORD visited them in the cool of the evening. First they were given animal skins to cover their bodies that were now housing a sinful soul. The death of the animals was the temporary sacrifice to cover their sin until the ultimate sacrifice of God Himself incarnated as Jesus Christ died to pay for their sin. The word translated "day" can also be translated an "era" or "age" or "space" or "season". After sinning they lived an existence in a deteriorating body that had cells that died every day until after approximately 950 years they were both completely dead physically with their spirits no longer housed there.

God is spirit and he who worships Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth. Worship is intimacy with God. Now, when we see Him, it is when we are in the spirit. The dirt man can no longer see God and live, so He is separated from us.

Knowledge of good and evil means an experiencing of both, not an intellectual assent to the existence of both. They already had mental knowledge that eating the forbidden fruit was evil, or against the will of God, before they did it. They had never violated His will before they ate the forbidden fruit.

From the very beginning, the Jewish and Christian "holy" books were already drowning in contradictions. This is not surprising, considering that these fanciful stories of the origin of humans and their descendants were wholly imagined through the minds of primitive desert goat herders. That these fantastical fairy tales have survived through the present - and believed by many as FACT - (just read ALL the answers from the Jesus freaks, who haven't grown up beyond rejecting Santa's existence) is a testament to the pathetic lack of intellectual growth by many, many monotheists. It's a truly sad state of affairs, and does not bode well for the future of humankind.

Edit @ tuberoot - You charge atheist websites with lacking "scholarly study?" Lol. It IS true that many non-believer websites are refutations and rejections of all the lies that are spewed from the mouths and into the Internet by all Christian websites with their OWN agenda. Why should you and the rest of the delusionally gullible Christians be allowed to spout lies unchallenged? I dare you to Google "The Origins of Christianity," click on a site that IS NOT Christian-biased, and you will read about the history of Christianity and about what a huge hoax it is. You are a willing victim of a gigantic fraud. My condolences for the death of your brain.

You appear to be using the Good News Bible (or similar for the translation). While it may be easier to read, it often leaves a lot to be desired in accuracy.

The exact warning reads:

Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest of it thou shalt surely die.

I can see why many are confused by that line, but look at it this way, it is the same as saying.

On the day one contracts a non-curable fatal disease, one will die.

That does not mean the person will die on the day the disease is contracted it means that one will, in time, die if one acquires the fatal disease.

Adam and Eve made an incorrect assumption about what God meant. Incorrectly assuming that they would die on the same day. The devil knew, what they assumed and knew what God really meant by the statement. Thus the devil gave Eve a half truth, telling her that she wouldn’t die (today), but failed to mention that in time they would die if they ate of the tree.

So no God didn’t lie, however Adam and Eve did not understand exactly what He meant.

And the Devil did what He is a master at, weaving a lie into a truth so that his statements sound good/honest. But in reality is designed to pull us away from Our Lord.

Just something to think about.

May Our Creator watch over you and your family.

True Parents answer this better than anyone

God + Man + Woman = Children of Heaven (all good)

Satan+ Man + Woman = Children of Hell (not so good)

Eve already could she was called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. She knew better but Adam was too busy ignoring her to stop her going off the rails.

They died in a "spiritual" sense. They walked and talked with God so one would think that they surpassed human traits and such (like a super human or something but not in a technological way). When God meant that they would die, he meant that they would die in that spiritual sense. And they did. Satan told Eve that surely they wouldn't "die", as in physically because that's what I believe Adam and Eve thought would happen. That they would die physically. But when they did eat of the fruit their eyes were opened and they were ashamed. The serpent knew that this would happen. Surely they wouldn't physically die but that spiritual part of them would. They didn't know that. Only that they would be able to distinguish good from evil, which fell into dying in that spiritual sense. So, that is what I think it means when he says the word "die".

I think your question shows you don't actually read the text you're complaining about. "that same day" is something you wrote in the question. It is not in the book. The only think that the knowledge showed Adam and Eve was that they were not able to handle the knowledge they had. Why do we see problems in this world today? Adam and Eve wanted to be knowledgabe about things they couldn't handle. Guess what? We still can't. God's Infallible Word doesn't depend on us screwups trying to figure it out. Without Him we can do NOTHING. Get the picture?

Yes, God does lie. If you look, in the first chapter he made man and woman. Then in the second chapter, he made man and later man woman from the rib. He also said that he could not be seen and then shows himself to other people (too busy to look these things up, trust me, it's there).

My favorite, and easy to look up is ask any christian how Judas dies. They will tell you that he hung himself right after the Crucifixion out os shame. But another of the gospels has him dieing in a plowing accident years later.

If you want infallible, you are looking in the wrong book.

First, know that our Bible is written in human terms with human translations from the original text.

God did not lie. Nowhere are we told just what kind of death or how quickly the death would be coming, just that man would surely die. After the advent of sin, since both Adam and Eve had sinned, they lost the freedom to communicate with God as they had - walking and talking with Him in the garden. Sin put up a barrier. God put up a barrier too, and stationed Angels to guard the garden so no human could enter it again.

Adam and Eve began a new life with pain, sorrow and all the negatives, and both died after leaving Eden. That was a physical death. Man can still talk to God, as we do when we say our prayers, or have conversations with Him, but we cannot 'see' God as Adam and Eve did, because of the brightness of his perfect character, it would at the least, cause us to lose our eyesight. God does not lie, but Satan does like to say a mixture of truth and lies to divert us from the truth. Eve was accepting of all that the Serpent said, and the serpent had Satan speaking through him, mixing truth and lies together to deceive Eve.

Perhaps you are familiar with the phrase "dead man walking." We use that phrase to mean that his fate is a forgone conclusion. The same happened with Adam and Eve. When they disobeyed God the outcome was inevitable. They were going to die. They were "dead people walking." Satan lied, and not God. As we can see by the world around us, we obviously have no concept of good and bad in the sense that Satan made Eve believe. We "know" it because we've suffered through it. If Adam and Eve had not disobeyed they would not know bad, only good.

If that were the case God being a liar - there wouldn't be Christianity.

God is by nature infallible or he wouldn't be God. Just some deity like Zeus.

Now Hebrew translation time.

"Not dying shall you die suddenly"

This would be contrary to what many have concluded, in that they have proposed that the serpent was contradicting the Lord. Instead it is proposed that the serpent as "wise" or "subtil" was communing in truth, that is partial truths. The apparent confusion on Eve's part causes us to wonder if she fully understood all of the terrible consequences of disobedience.

It would appear that Eve by using the short form of to die, with the added vowel connected n consonant, was saying that she believed that if she touched the fruit of the tree of knowledge she at that moment would die. While the Lord was using a softer form of to die which did not necessarily indicate a sudden death. The serpent was then possibly informing her that the tree of knowledge was not about death, but as its name implied was about knowledge only. No information was given to explain how severely the act of disobedience would be punished. Eve then saw that the fruit was pleasant to the eye and some how even saw that it was good to eat. How she saw that it was good to eat is not explained. Could it possible be that she witnessed the fruit being eaten, possibly even being eaten by the serpent?? And then

"she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat,

and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

CONCLUSION: An alternate translation of the communication between the serpent and Eve is proposed which is believed to be more in line with the Masoretic Text and as suggested by Strong's dictionary. The new translation changes the serpent's answer to Eve from a direct contradiction to the Words of the Lord to that of informing Eve that the result of her disobedience will not be sudden physical death. A less literal variation of the translation could be

"You will not very suddenly die".

"God" in the garden was the actually the devil just pretending to be God. The serpent was actually the real God, trying to get Adam and Eve to open up their eyes and see that they were being held captive in a garden where Satan, claiming to be God, was trying to keep them enslaved - naked, barefoot and ignorant. Still pretending to be God all along, Satan has succeeded in keeping people enslaved in ignorance for so long that now many people believe that he really is the real God. That would explain the apparent lies that were told in the garden. Is it true? Well, it at least seems more likely than the original story.

Christians...read Genesis 2:17....but this time, try reading with your eyes OPEN. God DID tell adam that the day he eats of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, that in THAT day he will surely die. Christians...continue reading further in the book of Genesis, and once again, read with your eyes OPEN. Now, most people understand that pregnancy normally lasts nine months. Before Adam and Eve had sex, they had eaten of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Notice that Adam and Eve have atleast three children? (In other words, YEARS went by as they had children.) That concludes that Adam and Eve did NOT die the day they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Another conclusion: God lied. Satan told Adam and Eve the truth, and they lived for a long time.

Why did God not want them to eat of a magical tree that would give them the knowledge of good and evil? Wouldn't God want his "children" to know the difference so they wouldn't sin against God? For those of you Christians who say "but sin didn't exist until they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,"...this is contradictory because before they ate of that forbidden tree, God called that tree "the tree of the knowledge of good and EVIL." Evil existed BEFORE they ate of the tree. ..."God" says so.

Damn, I'm good! Too bad a christian logically (oxymoron) can't refute my point I just made. (Especialy since I used THE BIBLE to do it.) Hahahahaha!

It's funny how believers would always come up with "their" answers, it's like they're slowly trying to rewrite the bible to make it more logical to fit today's modern world. So this is the story people believe?: god made tree and everything else including the serpent/satan (big mistake already), god made man+woman, tells not to eat the fruit of knowledge because he likes his creatures dumb as a bat? Either god already knew what was coming or got "punked" by his own lowly creatures. C'mon. Nobody lied because it's make-believe. It's a great story from the old days just like Little Red Riding Hood.

I love it when people come on here with intelligent questions. I'm going to be adding to your already large number of stars for this question

The way I've always looked at it, history is written by the winners. God won the war in heaven so everyone gets to hear his side of the story and not Lucifer's. I think Lucifer should at least get the chance to have us hear him out. I mean, of course the opposition is going to call him a liar and a deceiver of men, he wants people to think he's evil so they'll listen to him instead.

The truly educated hear arguments from both sides of a story and weigh in with an unbiased decision.

God is not a man that he should lie. Whereas satin is the father of lies.

God the origin of all truth is by his very nature perfect and infallible. It is us people who misinterpret the scriptures and then usually create problems for our selves.

God gave us choice because He did not want puppets but people that served and followed Him by their own volition. The fact that many people choose not to follow or serve God is a result of Adam and Eve's disobedience. They both ate of the tree and then obtained knowledge of good and evil. From then on some followed God and some did not throughout every generation of people. Nothing has changed people still do or do not follow after God even in 2008.

For those who take the Bible literally, it is blatantly obvious that God DID lie, and therefore there is NO reason to trust him or follow him any longer. This is the one single Bible verse that I read as a child and confirmed my suspicions that the entire concept of God WAS contradictory, not just by my opinion by even by his own FALLIBLE words. The BIBLE says so.

It wasn't physical death that happened to them that day. They had a spiritual connection with God which no-one since then has ever experienced. They walked in the garden with God, they had conversation with Him. He had made them for His good pleasure and they let Him down by disobeying the one and only command that He gave them. They had everything that they needed with no effort required on their part

If they had not done that they would have been there still in that beautiful situation.

God does not, and never did, lie. Satan is the father of lies and it is he who prompts questions such as this one.

They died spiritually that day and physically later, after they had produced the next few generations of this world. However, producing those next generations did not happen in the way that it would have, had they not disobeyed. From that point on they had to work hard for their food because God put a curse on the ground and weeds began to grow. Their children were born in pain during childbirth - another curse.

Pain, suffering and death were unknown until they sinned. The first death was that of the animal killed for its skin which was used to clothe them once they became aware that they were naked.

I'll try to be brief. First of all there is no satan(and no hell) Adam and Eve did a great service for mankind.. What most people still do not understand is that we need to know what God is not in order to know what God is. Adam and Eve made it possible to know what God is not..They got a bad rap... God bless.

Dear Friend,

Genesis 2:17 God says, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die."

Genesis 3:3 The serpent (Satan) said, "But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die." It does not say they would die..."THAT day." Also, Satan "twisted" the Word of God and that is what he does. Satan cannot create anything. He can only "copy." That is why he is called the counterfeit, the imposter. He lies, deceives and tricks us into believing something is true, when it is half truth, which is still a lie.

God cannot lie, or He would not, could not be...God!

Satan is the father of lies and will do anything to trick you into temptation to rape you of your soul for ...eternity.

This particular death is "spiritual" death; not just phsyical death. This death... would mean that they would not have the "same" relationship with God, they would now be "separated" from God for eternity. That is why God clothed Himself in the flesh (Jesus Christ) to die in our place on the cross. He died so that He could reconcile us back to the Father. Jesus was the perfect (blood) sacrifice. Why blood? Because blood is...LIFE!

They did die spiritually, and were separated from God. You still are.

Sound like Satan's lies are getting you, too.

God can't lie. If he says the sky is orange, he's not lying. The sky would become orange. He IS truth. There is a difference in telling the truth and BEING the truth. When he speaks it, it is so. He spoke all of creation into being. He spoke the plants and animals and stars into being. But for you, he got his hands dirty. He breathed his own life directly into you. That's a testament to how much he loves you.

The most wonderful thing you can ever do is return that love. Then, you will find yourself in the presence of one awesome creator that loves you more than you can fathom. Until you feel that love, you won't understand, and saying "there is no God" to someone who has experienced him is like saying "there is no air" to someone who breathes in and out and sustains his life over 21,000 times a day with that air that "doesn't exist". Then, it becomes you that is as a child that can't contemplate an adult mind set. That child just doesn't have the capacity to begin to understand, making objections to the contrary even more ludicrous to the God-knowing soul.

You will find such mistakes in the OT because the writers did not think that they had to be more careful about how they worded their statements. They thought that the world of ignorant masses would always be the same as then. So that is what I think of the word of that god concept.

No, God did not lie. Adam and Eve did die, just not physically. They had died spiritually, and could no longer live in the garden. God also could not have lied, because one day, Adam and Eve DID die eventually. So, there is no way God could have lied, because if he did that would mean that God would be a sinner, and if God hates sin, why would he sin? God can also not exist where sin is, and if god lied and sinned that would meant that God could not exist, making Christianity false.

So there. God did not lie.

yeah, without reading all the answers im sure it was said but they did die, not only spiritually, but eventually physically as well .. so we get insight to what a lie really is .. a deception ... a bending of the truth .. a half-truth is a lie .. no you are not going to die when you eat the fruit and everything will become clear .. BUT .. the part that was left out was they would die in many ways later and suffer for it along with all their descendants .. Satan took advantage of their lack of info and they failed to trust God ..

what verse in the Bible are you referencing to? where does is say that they will die the same day? it says in Genesis Chapter 2:15-17 " The Lord God placed the man in the Garden of Eden to tend and watch over it. But the Lord God warned him, "You may eat the fruit of every tree in the garden- except the tree of knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die." i does not say that they will die the same day. oh and by the way God can not and will not ever lie.. satan is the deceiver and the liar..

H.B. satirically mentioned the respond on your question. God mentioned "quite" no longer at the instant. quite skill "without fail" and "positively, honestly". So it does mean that they introduced mortality into the international by skill of eating of the fruit. There are additionally 2 deaths in Christian doctrine, actual and non secular demise. As I mentioned till now, they became mortal and by skill of so doing, could finally die. all of us do. additionally they spiritually died. God forged them out of his presence and out of the backyard. devil used the reality to tell a lie. He used their lack of expertise and their desire to consume the fruit to get them to disobey God. replace: I see you probably did no longer dispute without delay the definition of "quite", so which you attacked the definition of demise. So is this a spiritual question or in basic terms a query of symantics? You ask a spiritual question, you get a spiritual answer. in case you quite think of that God lied and devil informed the reality, then there's no longer something all and sundry will say interior the different which you will evaluate no longer to point have faith.

No God does not lie, The tree of life was the tree for Man to life for eternity, when the ate of the fruit they loss the value of an infinite life to a finite life they were cursed with "Death", death is a curse from the forbidden fruit, So man would live and then did rather than have eternal life on the physical level.

My question is, why did God even have that tree there in the first place?!?!? If he wanted the tree, couldn't he had just planted it in his own garden? He had plenty of other places to put it, but instead he put it right there. I dont know about you, but that seems kinda mean. Its like "Im gonna plant this beautyful tree that has delisious fruits on it, right in front of you, but its mine, so you cant have it. and if you have it, you will die, so ha."

When God said You will die - He meant a spiritual death caused by sin the punishment of which is Hell - that's the spiritual death. God never lies. Even if you read the Bible, even in the New Testament the word death is used, however it refers to a spiritual death that has to do with one's soul and it's eternal destination - Heaven or Hell. Satan on the other hand did lie - Satan said to Eve If you eat of this fruit, you will become like God, knowing good from evil- which obviously was a lie seeing as we are not God and we do not know good from evil- we rely on God's word which is Truth to know what's good and evil. The fall of man was similar to the fall of Satan as both were tempted to be like God and both are rendered the same punishment, which is Hell however through the death of God's Son, Jesus, we have a way to go to Heaven and be with God. All that's needed is repentance, a willingness to change and acceptance of Jesus as our Personal Lord and Savior, in effect confessing that we are sinners and admitting that we deserve God's judgment. If we receive the sacrifice paid on the cross for our souls, we will not die in our sin and inherit eternal damnation but be with God in Heaven.

wow, you've got a lot of answers to choose from! lol....Good Luck

This is clearly a "straw man" argument, since you set up parameters based on a wrong premise and preconceived ideas.

What you're suggesting is that God should have allowed Adam and Eve to die instantly without grace, mercy or forgiveness, or giving YOU a chance to ever be born.

So, if you ever stand before a judge for speeding or some other infraction of the law, he should NOT show leniency or mercy? He should "throw the books" at you, so to speak? And God was also wrong for showing leniency and mercy?

If your mom tells you that touching a hot stove could burn you, and you touch the hot stove anyway, if your mom had the power to prevent or at least delay the devastation of the affects of the burn until you were old enough to handle it, you would be upset with your mom? And you would most likely blame your mom for threatening you because she told you that you could get burned from touch the hot stove?

You know, if you were to apply your logic to all phases of life, you would also have to blame the police man if you were exceeding the posted speed limit, or if you drove through a red light!

Sorry, but when viewed in light of reality, your question is just nonsense.

the moment adam and eve ate the forbidden fruit, they started to age, something they have never done before. In essence, they started dying. As for as being Gods, they were nowhere near being divine. The definition of a "god" is a superhuman being having power over nature and human affairs. Satan lied as he always does.

You are misunderstanding the passage in question. Allow me to help clarify:

Genesis 2:16-17:

And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat.

But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it, for in the day that thou eatest

thereof thou shalt surely die.

(This is God's command to Adam.)

Genesis 3:4-5:

And the serpent said unto the woman, YE SHALL NOT SURELY DIE: for God doth know that in the day ye

eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

(The serpent deceives Eve. The lie is given along with two truths suggesting that the entire statement is true.)

The Apostle Peter said

2 Peter 3:8:

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord (God) a day is like a thousand years, and a

thousand years are like a day.

This means that what God counts as a day is AT LEAST one thousand years to us. Or quite possibly more.

Genesis 5:5:

and all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. (Eve died as well.)

Adam only lived 930 years. Not quite a "day", is it?

God did not lie.

The moment Adam & Eve ate from the "tree of knowledge of good and evil" they died spiritually. Their physical death would come later.

In contrast to what the serpent (Lucifer) had said: Ye shall NOT surely die.

They didn't drop dead in that instant, but they did die nonetheless.

Hope this clears it up for you.

The word 'day' in Hebrew does not necessarily mean a 24 hour period. It does not have to mean the part of the day that is lighter than night. It can mean also any particular period of time.

Strong's Number: 03117

Yowm

Noun Masculine

Definition

1. day, time, year

1. day (as opposed to night)

2. day (24 hour period)

1. as defined by evening and morning in Genesis 1

2. as a division of time 1b

3. a working day, a day's journey

4. days, lifetime (pl.)

5. time, period (general)

6. year

7. temporal references

1. today

2. yesterday

3. tomorrow

So the answer is going to take a bit of study if you get into trying to understand the Bible. Atheists sites lack scholarly study, as they have an agenda to confuse and refute even when there is not sufficient knowledge to refute. They learn what they can get away with, and then go with it.

You're adding to the story. God didn't say they would die that day but they would surely die. Satan told Eve that they would become as God, knowing good from evil. Not only was this a reference to physical death, but a spiritual death (being departed from God).

When your body dies, your spirit is separated. Your spirit don't die but is waiting for judgement.

When they eat the forbidden fruit they do die. God did not say they will die in body, physically, or in flesh. God is Spirit therefore He speaks regarding the spirit.

Just as Adam is dead in spirit, so are we all. When we are born again than only life begins. If you believe that you have life without Jesus Christ than you are at a far distance in the knowledge of the heavenly Kingdom.

One more thing, God cannot lie and if you believe this than you will see God as He is.

God didn't lie, and He never told Adam nor Eve that they would die an immediate death if they ate from the tree of Good and Evil. The Devil, Satan is a lier, and is the father of lies. Satan didn't tell the truth.. Adam and Eve both died. God's original idea was that people would have everlasting life. By eating of the fruit of the tree, they brought on their own death. Adam and Eve are dead now... They were kicked out of the garden, and learned what it was like to be separate from God.

Sorry but God didn't lie, Adam and Eve died, just like he said they would.

my teacher always reminds us....

"Do not take the Bible literally"

and God ,by the way, have spoken the truth... its because He banish Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden which contains the tree with the fruit that can give you everlasting life or something... so. therefore, Adam and Eve was unable to eat that fruit so, eventually they died....

and satan, a lie. it is because by eating the fruit, Adam and Eve lost their innocence... and they did not became more knowledgeable because beforehand, they know that god is good and satan is evil...

More important than the actual answer to this question is seeing the varying "perspective" of the answerers who THINK they are "good Christians." There are four main groups:

1. Those who claim that the Bible doesn't say "IN THE DAY that thou eatest thereof thou shalt SURELY DIE." The verse is Genesis 2:17, and there are multiple translations here:

http://biblecc.com/genesis/2-17.htm

Anyone who is ignorant to acknowledge this verse is REFUTING the word of God, and therefore is NOT a good Christian.

2. Those who attempt to redefine the word "die" to mean a "spiritual" death. Who the hell came up with THAT bright idea? The Bible does NOT say ANYTHING to indicate it means a "spiritual" death of any sort. Anyone who claims that it does is either ALTERING the word of God or ADDING words to his, and therefore is NOT a good Christian.

3. Those who attempt to redefine the word "day" to mean "a day in God's perspective" which could mean "within 1000 years." Why would God create rules for man in godly relative terms rather than in man's absolute terms? If I had a French maid who spoke no English, I could not give her instructions in English and expect her to obey them; I would need to use the language that SHE understood, French. Anyone who claims that God was using ambiguous terminology is calling God an author of confusion, and therefore is NOT a good Christian.

4. Those who attempt to redefine the word "die" to mean "become mortal." Again, the Bible does NOT say "become mortal" and God clearly said "you WILL die," NOT "you will BEGIN to die." If people were meant to be immortal, then there would have never been a reason for them to EAT ANYTHING. Also, any god with any wisdom would know better than to create immortal people. If they bred, they would quickly overpopulate the earth and suffer the pains of starvation, even if they couldn't die. A righteous god would not condemn everyone to such suffering. If they weren't meant to breed, then none of us would be here and there would be no point to Christianity. Anyone who attempts to interpret "die" as meaning "to become mortal" is either again calling God an author of confusion, is calling God foolish in his design, or is denying the very purpose of Christianity, and in any case is therefore NOT a good Christian.

By giving such varying answers in their attempts to defend God's words, Christians have effectively PROVEN that the Bible IS ambiguous, it CAN be skewed and corrupted to give unintended meanings, and that God IS the author of confusion. Since there is disagreement of interpretations, this also PROVES that AT LEAST three-quarters of people who THINK they are Christians actually have NO idea what they are talking about, and therefore have NO RIGHT to give ANY future opinions about God, Christianity, the Bible, or what ANY of it might mean. They should stop discussing such topics IMMEDIATELY, lest they promote FURTHER confusion.

God didn't lie, He doesn't do that.

What Satan does, is tell half-truths.

Yes, it was true that Adam and Eve would know that they were "like God", and would that their "eyes would be opened" by eating from the tree of knowledge.

But Satan left out the part that by disobeying they would experience for the first time, shame, (covering thier beautiful bodies because they knew they were naked) blame, (the woman gave it to me to eat), hiding from God in the garden, pain in childbirth, banishment from a paradise in the garden, and eventual physical death (from dust you came and so to dust you will return).

Kind of a lousy trade for a peice of fruit...

Satan left out that part.

Its so easy to CLAIM what the Bible says, on both the part of Christians and non-Christians. Why don't we do this properly and actually quote the verses in question:

Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Now we can start this conversation with what the Bible exactly says.

Those verses were quoted from the KJV, and are most commonly known from that version. I hope its no shock to anyone that the KJV is not the word of God--is it a TRANSLATION of the word of God, and as such, is not infallible or even consistent.

I want to present another translation, one that seeks to remain closer to the actual wording of the original scriptures:

Gen 2:17 and of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou dost not eat of it, for in the day of thine eating of it--DYING THOU DOST DIE.' (Youngs Literal Translation)

The statement of death in the original Hebrew is an ongoing process...DYING. Adam and Eve began to die the day they ate of the tree, and here is why:

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

They were removed from the source of their life, the tree of life, and hence began dying that day.

So, did God speak the truth that they would begin to die that day? Yes.

Did Satan also speak the truth? Yes. Adam and Eve did indeed learn of good and evil after eating of the tree. But Satan DID lie during the conversation, for he said:

Gen 3:4 And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die:

But Adam and Eve DID die.

Num 23:19 God is not a man, that he should lie...

Joh 8:44 ... When he [Satan] speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

I'm not so foolish as to believe that this will even begin to change your mind. But neither am I so foolish as to be disuaded from the scriptures by such easily addressed questions. The scriptures (and by that I mean the original writings--or as close as we can get to them) are consistent. This is not to say that much of modern day Christian doctrine is consistent with the scriptures. But that is also a part of the plan of God.

Joh 12:40 He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.

God bless.

Before I delve into the answer here. There is something of far more importance that must be settled. You mentioned the word "supposedly infalliable," as if you are doubting God. Hopefully, the scriptures below will give you a better understanding and in turn, a greater trust in God's infalliable Word the Bible.

Titus 1:2: "Upon the basis of a hope of the everlasting life which God, who cannot lie, promised before times long lasting." God cannot lie. Simply put.

Hebrews 6:18: "It is impossible for God to lie."

2Timothy 3:16, 27: "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work." Notice that these verses did not say "Some" scriptures is inspired. It says all.

Remember, we do not know every scripture in the Bible. Not all of them have been revealed to us. Only certain people can have that sort of information revealed to them by having Jehovah's holy spirit, or his active force.

Also, it is worth mentioning that Jehovah does not view time as we do. Why?

Isaiah 55:8: "For the thoughts of YOU people are not my thoughts, nor are my ways YOUR ways, is the utterance of Jehovah. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than YOUR ways, and my thoughts than YOUR thoughts."

How does Jehovah God view time?

2 Peter 3:8: "However, let this one fact not be escaping YOUR notice, beloved ones, that one day is with Jehovah as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day."

To the One who lives forever, a thousand years are as one day. He is not restrained or pressured by time, like we are, because our time is limited. We think only of a day in terms of 24 hours constituting as a single day. Jehovah thinks far grander than that.

Really, what we see happening today is merely the long-term result of what Adam and Eve did. Man still has not returned to the rulership of the only One who can guarantee his happiness and bless him with what are known as “human rights.” Until he does, he will never enjoy those rights.

No one has lived a thousand years, according to Jehovah. Here is a better picture of how Jehovah would view our time.

1,000 Years = 1 Day = 24 Hours

500 Years = 1/2 Day = 12 Hours

250 Years = 1/4 Day = 6 Hours

125 Years = 1/8 Day = 3 Hours

62 1/2 Years = 1/16 Day = 1 1/2 Hours

31 1/4 Years = 1/32 Day = 3/4 Hour (45 min.)

15 5/8 Years = 1/64 Day = 37 1/2 Minutes

How old was Adam and Eve in comparison to Jehovah's Day? How old are we according to Jehovah's Day? Did Adam and Eve live for a thousand years? No. How is that proven in God's infalliable Word the Bible?

Genesis 5:5: "So all the days of Adam that he lived amounted to nine hundred and thirty years and he died."

As close as 930 years of age is to 1,000; he did not live a full day, according to Jehovah God. In essense, Adam and Eve died in that "day." That same day they sinned, they died, although not instantly. The point is that they did not live for 1,000 years, which would constitute as one day to Jehovah. We do not even come even within shouting distance when we compare Adam's years on earth compared to us as humans, who may live 70, 80, 90, 100, if that?

How magnificent is Jehovah? Is God's Word "supposedly infalliable?" No, God's Word is infalliable! Why?

Deuteronomy 32:4: "The Rock, perfect is his activity,

For all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness, with whom there is no injustice; Righteous and upright is he."

Who of us can match that?

Either we follow our own course and suffer the consequences that Adam and Eve did or follow the laws, principles, standards, reminders, commandments and orders as set forth in the scriptures? The majority of the people do not follow the latter because their actions show its true colors.

Adam was created in God's image; destined to live forever (immortal). He and Eve immediately became mortal, and eventually died, as did all humans after them. Jesus made possible a way for people to reclaim immortality. The forbidden tree was the law (knowing good from evil) and by it no man was justified. No man can be good enough to go to heaven. Only by God (Jesus) sacrificing his own life for you and I, and rising from the dead (as we will), and us acknowledging his position and sacrifice; and at the same time acknowledging our sin and repenting, are we justified.

The did die that same day...on that day, God cut them off from the "tree of life"...and thus, death became an inevitable part of what they were!

Satan did NOT just tell them that they wouldn't die and that they would be able to digtinguish good from evil. The first part contradicted what God said, but God had already told them the second (by the name of the tree!). What Satan added was that having that knowledge would make them LIKE GOD...and he clearly lied about BOTH since we all die and none of us come close to being like God in any other way either!

Interestingly, Satan's lie wasn't entirely a lie...like any good lie, it contained the appearance of just enough truth as to be believable. As you noted, they didn't drop dead that day...and when they acquired that knowledge, they did start thinking that they WERE "like God"...the real lie was that their "immortality" and their "godhood" was only in their mind!!

It does not say they will die that same day. My point may be lost trying to describe a subtle abstract to somebody that does not understand abstract ideas.

My friend, your sins have blinded you from the "Word of God." The Christians below are correct in their interpretations when they determined that God was telling Adam and Eve that "they would die, from the "eternal life" they would have received had they obeyed God originally. With sin, you are "dead" to the Word of God. That is why you do not possess the ability to discern the true meanings of God. You cannot allow God to live within you so God cannot do his works within you.

Ok, I can see where that story can be confusing to some people... So I will try to explain it to you my way.... Now when Satan told Adam and Even his side of the story Yes in a way he told them the truth But not the whole truth... Satan did not tell them that if they listen to him they would loose their rights to immortally.... And that eventually they would die for dis-obeying Gods orders..... Now If you understand what immortally mean... They gave up the rights to live forever and they gave up the rights to the easy life... So God not only told Adam and Eve the truth he told them the whole truth.... Now can you imagine living in a garden forever never having to work never having to plant your own food and whatever you can conceived of wanting was there for the taking..... And never having feel the pains of childbirth and never have to worry about being warm or cold again and never getting sick.... Satan never told them that if you listen to me you loose all of the above..... So you tell me who was the one that told the whole truth.................. Well we all know now by now that Satan did not.... Now man-kind dies from a ton of reason and that all comes from man-kind obeying Satan and not God...............

God allowed them this last 6000 years to rule the world and for some reason I do not believe mankind has learned the difference between good and bad. The governments are corrupt, so is humans and even the angels became wicked and came down and lived with humans.

You are doing what Eve did: changing/added to what God said. He never told them that they would die "that day."

Compare:

God said, "But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." [Genesis 2:17 KJV]

"But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die." [Genesis 3:3 KJV]

(God didn't say anything about not touching it.)

______

"God is not a man that he should lie," [Numbers 23:19 KJV]

YES, they did eventually die physically; however, I believe God's spirit left the day they sinned leaving them "spiritually dead." Physically, Adam lived 930 years -- and then he died. [Still the same day to God: 1 day = 1,000 years. 2 Peter 3:8] Do you think that God had not already known that they would disobey Him? Jesus' purpose (God's plan of redemption) was already established before God made Adam. God knows the beginning and the end of all things--including us folks.

Tip: God is the "manufacturer" and knows our shelf life and expiration date.

________

Non-biblical statement: God breathed His very own spirit into Adam. If God had wanted it so, Adam could have lived forever. However once He told them they would die if they ate the fruit of that tree, He had to limit their number of days. BECAUSE GOD CANNOT LIE and because what God says IS. (Example: Genesis 1: "And God said...")

"So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it." [Isaiah 55:11 KJV]

PS The Lizard on the first page got the Job "family loss" situation out of whack. God did not "withdraw His protection" from that family. Job made and offering, didn't trust God--didn't believe the offering was enough so made another one. He withdrew his trust in God's word. The word of God works if we work it and believe it. "Without faith it is impossible to please God." Again, that was Job's own doing.

They died in spirit, in that when their flesh died at the end of their mortal life, their spirit would die with their flesh.

Pespectively, the Word of God is intended to be infallible - if there is a contradiction, it's usually US creating the contradiction through forcing our own personal lens.

Their innocents died that day. Their perfect way of life died that day, when they decided to listen to something other than the One who gave them everything, but one tree.

We as human beings seem to never be satisfied with all that we have,we seem to want more and more until we own all there is.

Here is a political example: Liberal woman use to claim women's Lib is for all women to be treated equal to men, but truth sets in when a woman that they disagree with (Pro-lifer), they claim wrong things against, that they themselves have been angry about for many years.
Daniel
2008-09-07 01:11:19 UTC
They did die that day. It was a spiritual death. The moment sin first entered the world it separated man from God because God cannot be one with sin. It severed the relationship.

Often times people get confused and tie the death to physical death, and claim it was fulfilled that day because they began to die, although it took many years to complete.

In scripture being lost is equated with spiritual death, the opposite of spiritual or eternal life.

1Tim 5:6, "But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth."

That's saying that lost living people are spiritually dead.

When a certain man wanted to go bury his father Jesus said in Mat 8:22, "But Jesus said unto him, Follow me; and let the dead bury their dead."

That's speaking of spiritually dead people burying a physically dead person.

When Adam first sinned, and sin entered the world, they did die that very day. It was a spiritual death that need reparation. I'm sure they restored their relationship with God, but they did experience a death the day sin first entered the world.

They did die.

They lost their relationship with God, and that is spiritual death.

I see you are also (spiritually) dead, otherwise you would believe God and not Satan.

All men are dead in sin, unless they repent, call upon God and are born again.

Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.

John 3:3

"As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath."

Ephesians 2:1-3

de ligno autem scientiae boni et mali ne comedas in quocumque enim die comederis ex eo morte morieris [Gen. 2, 17]

But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat. For in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt die the death. [Gen. 2, 17]

"Wherefore as by one man sin entered into this world, and by sin death; and so death passed upon all men, in whom all have sinned... For as by the disobedience of one man, many were made sinners; so also by the obedience of one, many shall be made just." (Romans 5:12, 19)

"die the death" i.e., become mortal, or subject to death. God added this threat to ensure the keeping of the command. By the threatened penalty of death it was easy for man to perceive how great his sin would be, if he ate the forbidden fruit.

From what I understand, neither were lying......See- God intended for all to live forever, but once we as mankind sinned....death was then an inevitable part of our lives. So death did occur that day. They lost the chance to live forever, in the physical realm. That is why Christ came to the earth to make that a possibility once again for all of God's people. Does that make any sense? I hope so.

Gen 2:16 But the Lord God gave him this warning: "You may freely eat any fruit in the garden

Gen 2:17 except fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat of its fruit, you will surely die."

God didn't say that same day, and yes what they did brought sin and death into the world.

Gen 5:3 When Adam was 130 years old, his son Seth was born,[fn3] and Seth was the very image of his father.[fn4]

Gen 5:4 After the birth of Seth,[fn5] Adam lived another 800 years, and he had other sons and daughters.

Gen 5:5 He died at the age of 930.

Rom 5:12 When Adam sinned, sin entered the entire human race. Adam's sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.

Rom 5:13 Yes, people sinned even before the law was given. And though there was no law to break, since it had not yet been given,

Rom 5:14 they all died anyway-even though they did not disobey an explicit commandment of God, as Adam did. What a contrast between Adam and Christ, who was yet to come!

Rom 5:15 And what a difference between our sin and God's generous gift of forgiveness. For this one man, Adam, brought death to many through his sin. But this other man, Jesus Christ, brought forgiveness to many through God's bountiful gift.

Rom 5:16 And the result of God's gracious gift is very different from the result of that one man's sin. For Adam's sin led to condemnation, but we have the free gift of being accepted by God, even though we are guilty of many sins.

Rom 5:17 The sin of this one man, Adam, caused death to rule over us, but all who receive God's wonderful, gracious gift of righteousness will live in triumph over sin and death through this one man, Jesus Christ.

Rom 5:18 Yes, Adam's one sin brought condemnation upon everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness makes all people right in God's sight and gives them life.

Rom 5:19 Because one person disobeyed God, many people became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many people will be made right in God's sight.

Rom 5:20 God's law was given so that all people could see how sinful they were. But as people sinned more and more, God's wonderful kindness became more abundant.

Rom 5:21 So just as sin ruled over all people and brought them to death, now God's wonderful kindness rules instead, giving us right standing with God and resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord

2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right.

Better question:

Why was the tree there in the first place?

EVEN better question:

How and why does a tree have that kind of power?

Genesis 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die.”

Genesis 3:2 The woman said to the serpent, “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’ ”

Genesis 3:4 “You will not surely die,” the serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

God originally says "you will surely die", meaning they will die, but not immediately, meaning they will begin to die through aging.

Eve sets herself up for deception. When she describes the command not to eat the forbidden fruit, she describes it as a restrictive command(we can eat from the trees, but we must not eat from this one) while God's command was a more permissive one(You may eat from ANY of the trees but this one).

Also, Eve lies by saying they will die by touching the fruit, but God only forbid eating, not touching. She also says "or you will die" indicating immediate death, rather than "surely die"

The serpent then lies by denying what God says("You will not surely die" but hides it with a bit of truth("You will know good from evil")
Sand

They did die. But what God considers death and what the serpent subtly said about death are two different things. Simply being physically alive does not mean you have life according to God and live with God, but physical life is all that is needed for so called "life" in the serpent’s world. They became separated from God and began to use their five senses to give them understanding instead gaining everthing from God. True death in God's eyes (who is spirit) is to be spiritually dead and asleep to spiritual understanding. Now while eating of the tree of knowledge we have to use our five senses to comprehend carnal things and then translate these physical experiences to Spiritual understanding. This brings us back to true life, and not just physical life.

God was talking about spiritual death. That is why Jesus said you must be born again. Spiritual rebirth. This saying confused Nicodemus who thought Jesus was talking about a physical rebirth. Jesus clarified it for him saying that he was not talking about a fleshly birth. The bible is a spirtual book and often is misinterpeted through the flesh. This is why even Jesus disciples misunderstood many of his sayings. Once he said destroy this temple and in three days I will rebuild it. He was talking about is own death but some of the Jews were offended thinking he meant the large stone temple.

From Romans 5

You will need the Spirti to understand this...pray without ceasing.

"Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned– for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if the many died by the trespass of the one man, how much more did God's grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many! Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man's sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification. For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.

Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so

It's still infallible.

Addressing the issue: The prospective of Adam and Eve living forever was now lost because they had sinned. Romans 5:12. They passed on only sin and imperfection to all their children. So now they only had death to look forward to. God did not "kill" them right away, but that was the outcome of their decision. However, they did die to him in another way that day. They no longer were able to communicate directly to their heavenly father any-longer. They lost that precious gift.

In eating of the tree, they had become judges for themselves as to what was good and what was bad. For blatantly declaring that God had wrong motives in forbidding Adam and Eve’s eating from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad, the unseen speaker was making himself a slanderer, a Devil, toward God. He was not lovingly interested in eternal life for Eve, but was scheming to bring about her death. In fact, he was trying to remove the fear of death from her, not death at his hands, but death at the hands of God for breaking his known command. The unseen speaker was setting himself in resistance to God and was in this manner making himself Satan, which means Resister. He was interested in getting someone else to resist God and put someone else on the side of Satan. We know who the real speaker of such a lie and slander was. It was no serpent!

Unhappily, Eve did not dispute this lying, slanderous statement. She did not lovingly and loyally come to the defense of her heavenly Father. She did not now recognize her husband Adam’s headship over her and go to him to ask him whether he approved of her acting selfishly on the matter or not. He could have exposed the deception. But Eve let herself be thoroughly deceived. She entertained the wrong idea presented to her by a liar, slanderer and resister of God her heavenly Father. She let the fear of the terrible penalty for disobedience vanish. She let selfish desire begin forming in her heart. She let herself be drawn out by this desire and enticed. God had said that it would be bad for her and Adam to eat the forbidden fruit, but she decided to establish for herself what was bad and what was good. She accordingly decided to prove her heavenly Father and God a liar. So now when Eve contemplated the tree, it became attractive-looking.

“Consequently the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was something to be longed for to the eyes, yes, the tree was desirable to look upon. So she began taking of its fruit and eating it.” (Genesis 3:6) In this way she became a transgressor against God, a sinner. The fact that she was thoroughly deceived did not excuse her. She lost her moral perfection.

Her husband was not there to prevent her independent action. When she next joined him, she had to use persuasion to get him to eat, because he was in no way deceived. He did not choose to prove the one speaking by means of the serpent a liar and to vindicate God as One using His universal sovereignty in a righteous manner, a beneficial manner. What, then, happened when Adam joined Eve in transgression? Genesis 3:6, 7 tells us:

“Afterward she gave some also to her husband when with her and he began eating it. Then the eyes of both of them became opened and they began to realize that they were naked. Hence they sewed fig leaves together and made loin coverings for themselves.”

They had now become “like God, knowing good and bad,” in that they no longer accepted the standards of good and bad as set by God but they had become judges for themselves as to what was good and what was bad. In spite of this, their consciences began to bother them. They felt exposed, needing a covering. Their bodily nakedness was no longer a clean, innocent state in their eyes, in which to appear before the True God. So they began tailoring and covered over their private parts that God had given them for the honorable purpose of reproduction of their kind. Thus under the condemning testimony of their own consciences, they condemned themselves, even before the Sovereign Lord.

Jehovah had warned Adam that if he disobediently ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad he would positively die “in the day” of his eating. (Gen. 2:17)

True to God’s word, on the very day of Adam’s sinning Jehovah called the transgressors to account and pronounced sentence of death. The punishment was inescapable. Judicially, from God’s standpoint, Adam and Eve died that day. (Compare Luke 20:37, 38.)

But so as to carry out his own stated purpose regarding the populating of the earth, Jehovah allowed them to produce a family before they literally died. Nevertheless, from the standpoint of God’s viewing 1,000 years as one day, when Adam’s life ended at 930 years, this was within one “day.” (Gen. 5:3-5; compare Psalm 90:4; 2 Peter 3:8.)

Thus Jehovah’s truthfulness was upheld as to the time when punishment would be executed, and his purpose to populate the earth with Adam’s offspring was not thwarted. But it has meant that, for a time, sinful people have been allowed to live.

Death entered the world that day. God was warning Adam that the day he ate it he would surely die and he did die.

There is also spiritual meanings and a day is as a thousand years and a thousand years is as one day.

Adam lived 930 years and died the first day of the lord.

The Sabbath is also one day and is the seventh day and is the day of the lord and is one thousand years.

There are two trees in the garden. These two trees have more than a literal meaning. We are told that The tree of knowledge of good and evil is forbidden.

The day Adam eats of it he will surely die.

The tree of life is also in the midst of the garden if they eat of it they will live forever.

These two trees are obviously more than trees.

What is the knowledge of good and evil?

Where could a man gain knowledge of good and evil?

We get our knowledge of good and evil from God.

The law that God sent down to Moses is the knowledge of good and evil.

Why would God's righteous law kill man?

Because man could not live up to God's righteousness.

It is also the reason there was a tree in the midst of the garden called the tree of life.

This is God's mercy. Salvation through Jesus Christ.

This story Moses tells is of the two natures of God his righteousness and his mercy.

It is the story of man and his fall from God's glory and God's plan of salvation.

God will never lie to us. They, in a way, died...not the way we think of dying, but within their faith.

Which translation says that exactly? None that I've read. It says "For on the day you eat of it, you will surely die." And He means that they'll lose their eternal life.

Perhaps satan corrupted the Bible to make himself seem morally superior. Crazy? Well anything is possibility in matters of faith, since it requires no objective justification.

not quite, in Hebrew the exact phrase was "dying you shall die'

they entered into a dying process, the world began to decay, death entered the world

God told the truth. They lived to see their oldest son cain kill their 2nd son and see the pain and suffering that they brought into the world

The Serpent asked:

"Did God really say you were not to eat from any of the trees in the garden?" (3:2) The woman answered the serpent, "We may eat the fruit of the trees in the garden. (3:3) "But of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, 'You must not eat it, nor touch it, under pain of death." (3:4) Then the serpent said to the woman, "No! You will not die! (3:5) "God knows in fact that on the day you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil." What a remarkable statement! "Your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil." The Serpent directly contradicts Yahweh. Obviously, one of them has to be lying. Which one, do you suppose? And, if the serpent speaks true, wouldn't you wish to eat of the magic fruit? Wouldn't it be a good thing, to become "like gods, knowing good and evil"? Or is it preferable to remain in ignorance?

(Gen. 3:6) The woman saw that the tree was good to eat and pleasing to the eye, and that it was desirable for the knowledge that it could give. So she took some of its fruit and ate it. She gave some also to her husband who was with her, and he ate it. (3:7) Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized that they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together to make themselves loincloths. The author makes an interesting assumption here: that if you realize you are naked you will automatically want to cover yourself. Further implications will unfold shortly...

(Gen. 3:8) The man and his wife heard the sound of Yahweh God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from Yahweh God among the trees of the garden. (3:9) But Yahweh God called to the man. "Where are you?" he asked. (3:10) "I heard the sound of you in the garden," he replied. "I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid." (3:11) "Who told you that you were naked?" he asked. "Have you been eating of the tree I forbade you to eat?"

And so the sign of the Fall becomes modesty. Take note of this. The descendants of Adam and Eve will be distinguished throughout history from virtually all other peoples by their obsessive modesty taboos, wherein they will feel ashamed of being naked. It follows that those who feel no shame in being naked are, by definition, not carriers of this spiritual disease of original sin!

(Gen. 3:12) The man replied, "It was the woman you put with me; she gave me the fruit, and I ate it." Right. Blame the woman. What a turkey! (3:13) Then Yahweh God asked the woman, "What is this you have done?" The woman replied, "The serpent tempted me and I ate. "So of course she blames the serpent. But just what did the serpent do that was so evil? Why, he called Yahweh a liar! Was he wrong? Let's see... (3:21) Yahweh God made clothes out of skins for the man and his wife, and they put them on. Out of skins? This means that Yahweh had to kill some innocent animals to pander to Adam and Eve's new obsession with modesty!

And now we come to the crux of the Fall. Yahweh had said back there in chapter (2:17), regarding the fruit of the tree of knowledge, that "on the day you eat of it you shall most surely die." The Serpent, on the other hand, had contradicted Yahweh in chapter (3:4-5): "No! You will not die! God knows in fact that on the day you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil." So what actually happened? Who lied and who told the truth about this remarkable fruit? The answer is given in the next verse: (3:22) Then Yahweh God said, "See, the man has become like one of us, with his knowledge of good and evil. He must not be allowed to stretch his hand out next and pick from the tree of life also, and eat some and live forever."

Get that? Yahweh himself admits that he had lied! In fact, and in Yahweh's own words, the Serpent spoke the truth.

Sure, I can give you some perspective, soon as you get the verse right lol. The verse goes "But of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you may not take; for on the day when you take of it, death will certainly come to you."

Makes a difference when you see it as written, eh? lol

They did die, and began to die on that very day. Before then, they were immortal.

The death of innocence is the beginning of mortal death.

Where did it say "that same day"? They weren't meant to die, but after living life successfully they were to be changed to spirit.

God lies all throughout the bible . Look at Job for instance he withdrew his protection on a bet and let his family be slaughtered . Giving him another family was kind of like saying here Lassie I know I shot Timmy just to piss you off but here is a new kid to play with unless I want to mess with you some more .

But they did die that same day, in a way.

By taking the knowlege of good and evil, so was there inocence and there imortality.

There perfect world had become a place where evil was possible, and so death was also possible.

I believe satan left that part out.
