I think they are missing something for sure. But they are sadly trying to recruit people to their side by being here. Satan needs all the followers he can get.

I used to ask that question too Greg. I too was not sure. I now understand that being atheist is a belief system just like any other and involves a person's station regarding things spiritual or not. It has to do with how each of us regards those topics surrounding Eternity - whether one believes there is Someone there or not is besides the point on a site like this. What we do have in common is a fascination with what others have to say, share, comfort and shock. :)))) I don't like when an atheist tells me I'm nuts, foolish or naive for believing in God or being spiritual, but I don't think those who believe in God and other theistic belief systems should tell atheists they are wrong. I think we all need to be more tolerant of each other. That's just my perspective,

No - it is you that are missing out on the knowledge of what an atheist is!!!

ATHEIST - someone who does not believe in a God – any God – not just the Christian one. But that does not mean they do not hold strong moral or religious beliefs! They can follow any religion that does not have a god and there are a lot of those!!

Like BUDDHISM – Religious teaching from Buddha and his followers that by destroying greed, hatred and delusion (the cause of all suffering) man can attain perfect enlightenment!!

Add christians and muslims together and they amount to just under a third of the world population the majority of the rest is made up of atheists and religions without gods!! So they are in the majority here!!!

ATL, I'm not an Atheist but from what I'm learning Atheist beliefs are actually an accepted and established belief system. Those who visit this sight, who are Atheists do so because, while they are not traditionally religious or spiritual, do believe in something which they feel strongly about and are committed to. It is how they identify who they are and like the rest of us, how they make sense of the chaos we call this world. I can't say that all I've contributed is right on the mark, but according to an interfaith study group I participate in on-line this is what I've recently learned from others.

I'm surprised that no one here was willing to give a clear answer rather than coming back with a series of wisecracks and comebacks. Your question is a fair one and worthy of a genuine answer.

im spiritual

but

other than that

this is a question and answers site, not a chat room

ergo, we are all entitled to be here

because

we can and do all give answers, have questions, have knowledge, want to learn more about religion and spirituality, AND the people who beleive them

no, when it comes to spirituality, i dont feel im "missing out2 on anything

i feel im right where im supposed to be

we are who we are

if i said to you, do you feel your missing out on soemthing, just because you talk to an athesit, does that sound totally fair to you,

probably not

your just talking

Additional

"well....I don't go on say a dog site, or politics site, I don't have a dog, and I'm not into politics...."

EXACTLY

your not "into" politics

its just not important to you

well, we ARE "into" religion and spirituality

also, just because you dont HAVE a dog doesnt mean you dont like talking about them, or have n othoughts on them what-so-ever

im betting you DO have thoughts on dogs, either you like them, want one never got one

ergo, a thought, an opinion

or you dislike them, and so choose to not be interested in them because you disliek them

however, luckily for you, the law and government are not forcing dogs into your life, as we experience every day with religion

ergo, makign us entitled to have, and wanting to have views and express those views

ergo, makign us interested in the subject

Additonal

"well...I don't go to the dog site and tell them why I dislike dogs...which by the way I don't

The point her is....why would you-all be so intense on trying to put down a belief in God or Spirtual on this site if it wasn't just for spite?

but, if you had any interest in the subject, you WOULD

if you had any information on the subject you would, if you had any questions about the subject you would, if you were affected by dogs or the subject of dogs, you would

see?

and as you fine well know, not "ALL" atheists here are here to put down anyone

some of us, just like you, are here to learn and teach and undersand people and life a bit more

For the same reason I read books about history and browse questions in the consumer electronics > cameras section. I'm not a historian or a photographer, but I'm interested in both. I'm also interested in learning more about all the world's religions. It just so happens that, being an ex-Christian myself, I actually have an opinion about a lot of the questions that are asked in this section, so this is where I spend most of my time.

If you want an all Christian site, this ain't it. I'm here because as someone who was a Christian for decades and experienced a long letting go I know all the negative aspects of holding on to irrational faith. If I can make the path to reason and freedom from guilt a bit easier for anyone, I will.

Although atheism isn't a religion, it IS a religious position.

"Are you feeling your missing out on something"

The word is " you're ".

Why can't you people get it right?

And, no; I have something that an enslaved mind does not have.

It's called FREEDOM.

Why can't Christians be honest?

Why can’t y'all just say:

"I know my beliefs are illogical, but I've been brainwashed into believing these things my entire life."

OR

"I am too weak to live in this world, without the hope that there is someone watching over me, and I need to believe in an afterlife".

OR

"I am too scared to even consider the possibility that there is no God, for fear of being punished by him".

OR

"The thought of hell is so terrifying to me, that I have to believe, and be good".

If you look very carefully, Religion and Spirituality falls under Society and Culture.

As we are all part of some society and culture, we all have a right to be in this section and make our opinion known. In this case, an opinion against religion is still ON TOPIC.

Note the section does not say "I am Religious" just discusses Religion. If I read up on Greek mythology, I am not suddenly a believer in Zeus. You can still discuss or know things related to a topic, even be interested in it, without being it yourself.

I watch sports, but I suck at playing them. ;)

When people believe, they lose their initiative and drive to seek the truth. They embrace a bias - a prejudice. They become blind to the truth, to honesty, to humanity. Beliefs are not truths. The are the blinding failings of the gullible. Beliefs can entrap people and make them vulnerable to the motives of others.

Thus Moses was able to command people to slaughter nations (including women, children and babies), take their lands, chattels and 32,000 captive virgins for the pleasure of G-d and His chosen race. - The Book of Deuteronomy. Moses and his favored "real" G-d were racists worse than Hitler.

Yet, people believe Moses was inspired by "real" G-d. Rather, he was inspired by power and greed, and learned to manipulate people's fears and superstitions to achieve his ends - power, women and wealth.

Sadly, people are blind to the continuous stream of human tragedies resulting from the various "real" G-d delusions promoted by men with motives. Thousands of G-ds have been created (envisioned) by man. Thousands have been destroyed (discarded). The current "real" G-ds aren't supported by the laws of nature either, and they too will fall in disfavor.

G-ds are the biggest and most divisive threat and danger to our gullible and vastly ignorant humanity. The worst thing that people have to lose if they believe in "real" G-ds is their humanity, peace and joy. The Middle East is a testament to this.

Assuming G-d is real, ask yourself this question: What is G-d's motive for creation if not praise and worship of Himself? Now, if a man demanded that you give him continuous praise and worship or face his wrath, you'd consider him an evil tyrant, wouldn't you? Then how can you worship tyrants (real or fictitious) worse than Hitler?

I am often countered with Pascals wager: But what if G-d IS real?

Then on judgment day (assuming) I would say to Him: "Sir, Satan didn't create hell, You did. Satan didn't bring the plagues or create pain and suffering, You did. Satan didn't punish all generations of humanity for the "sin" of Adam and Eve. You did. Satan didn't kill babies and deliver captive virgins for the pleasure of your chosen race. You did. Yet, Sir, I do not worship Satan. How then could I worship You, the embodiment of the Greatest Evil."

So why am I here? To beg you not to worship the Evil God. It's time to save humanity from a mental parasite.

Uh, self defense? Just kidding.

I'm not in the "Religion & Spiritual" site. I just click on the "answer" icon and I get lists and lists and lists of posts from all groups.

Normally, I don't answer posts from "Religion & Spiritual," but yours specifically asked atheists to answer. So here I am.

No, I just became an ex-Christian.

I've heard of many books to explain real history; not the ones you read in the bible. I am also becoming interested in Buddhism, that is spirituality.

I don't know very much about Cats and would very little to contribute there without upsetting those nice people.

As an ex-christian, though, I do believe I have input on spirituality.

by defining yourself as 'atheist' you're showing that you have an interest in religion and the religious, otherwise you wouldn't need a word to describe it because it wouldn't exist.

That said, why do you feel the need to be offensive to people? There's nothing Christian about your stab goof.

to convert to god, find jesus, budda, allah, thor and a few others. then pray to them all for all the money in the world, which i will use to destroy every church and make my own super religion where i force everyone to live underwater like 'god' intended

No. I'm here to defend atheism and try to glean some understanding as to why people believe what they believe and to make jokes occasionally.

To counter the misconceptions, falsehoods and outright lies spread about us by believers.

Why are believers here? Do they feel they're missing out on something and have to read up about other religions?
