Context of Christmas has changed over the years. It is a secular, traditional holiday for many modern families of gift exchanges and gathering for dinners.

I celebrate Christmas. I have no problem celebrating Christmas. It has nothing at all to do with Christianity or the bible. In fact, The bible specifically tells Christians not to celebrate Christmas. No where in the bible is any Christian instructed to celebrate the birth of Christ and no where in the bible is the month of December verified as the date to celebrate the birth of Christ. You can not put God back into something that he was never in in the first place. The pagan roots of Christmas have long been recognized. Because of its unscriptural origin, Christmas was banned in England and in some of the American colonies during the 17th century. Anyone who even stayed home from work on Christmas day had to pay a penalty

I cut down a tree, put it in a stand, drag it into my home, and sing songs around it like; "Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer, and Frosty the Snow Man, or Here Comes Santa Clause." It's a fun holiday for Gift Giving and meeting friends, taking a break from work, eating good foods, and enjoying life.

2 Corinthians 6:14-18 (New International Version, ©2010) Warning Against Idolatry

14 Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

Jeremiah 10: 1-5 does talk about Christmas Customs.

1 Hear what the LORD says to you, O house of Israel. 2 This is what the LORD says:

"Do not learn the ways of the nations or be terrified by signs in the sky,

though the nations are terrified by them.

3 For the customs of the peoples are worthless; they cut a tree out of the forest, and a craftsman

shapes it with his chisel.

4 They adorn it with silver and gold; they fasten it with hammer and nails so it will not totter.

5 Like a scarecrow in a melon patch, their idols cannot speak; they must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not fear them; they can do no harm nor can they do any good."

If I am guilty of anything at all, I am guilty of doing the exact same thing the Christians have done. I have taken a pagan religious practice, attached my own meaning to it, and celebrated it by singing, giving gifts and having fun. The only difference between us is this. My eternal soul is not in any danger while yours is going to hell for joining in pagan practices. Merry Christmas!

Christmas is a pagan holiday that has nothing to do with Christ. Christ was born in the spring, not the winter solstice. Perhaps your question got ignored because it's been posted a thousand and one times by others and the answers don't change. Christmas is a pagan day steeped in paganism lore that mankind just follow because that is what they were taught. Why not honor the Holy Days in the bible? Those are the days that matter, not the days mankind created! And please don't tell me that only the Jews honor it because they don't even use the Holy Bible, but Christians do so don't just ignore what is in it because you like getting stupid gifts.

I do celebrate it. It's called the Winter Solstice. The sun reaches its most northerly dawn on Dec 21 then stays there for three days. On the 25th it starts its progress south again. This natural occurrence has been hijacked by numerous religions as the birthday of their god for many thousands of years - way before Christianity came along.

It's more likely your post didn't make it to the front page, but hey, pretend it's "can't", why not.

If by celebrate you mean "celebrate the months-displaced birthday of a hypothetical zombie man-god" then the answer is I don't. If by celebrate you mean "get together with friends, eat well, exchange presents and have a good time" then because it's fun, something you lot should try sometime.

Atheists, like most people, like to get together with friends and family for food, fun, friendship, and love.

Jesus is worshiped on Sunday and is a sun god, like Mithras, Zeus/Jupiter, Horus, Attis, Dionysus, Adonis, Tammuz, Hercules, Perseus, Bacchus, Apollo, Helios, and Sol Invictus -- whose birthdays are also on the old winter solstice of December 25, when the sun is “reborn.”

Jesus had 12 disciples, like Mithras did and like the 12 signs of the Zodiac.

Note also that there were more than a dozen deities and saviors who were resurrected after violent deaths -- Jesus, Mithras, Osiris/Serapis, Inanna/Ishtar, Horus, Perseus, Bacchus, Attis, Hermes, Adonis, Hercules/Heracles, Tammuz, Asclepius, and Prometheus.

Questions fly by here exceedingly quickly. A vast majority of your answers will occur in the first few minutes.

Plus this question is asked all the time by several people. It gets old fast.

And to answer it: I don't celebrate Christmas. If I want to buy somebody a present or put a tree up in my living room, I won't bother waiting until December to do it.

christians hijacked pagen festival times (ie the onset of winter for christmas and the onset of spring for easter) to cause less controversy and disruption. do you honestly believe that since the birth of christ christmas has been celebrated on the same day every single year for 2011 years?

no is the answer i'm looking for

Why should atheists not celebrate a public holiday?

Christmas is not hyphenated by the way. It is a single word.
2011-02-17 14:32:46 UTC
Yes I do celebrate christmas. It has become a cultural event as much as a religious one and I celebrate it as such. It is fun. You are allowed to enjoy yourself in this life, you know. Your religion is probably anti fun. I mean there is no record of Jesus having a good laugh or being a fun person to be with is there?

Because I didn't see your question until now. I don't search YA 24/7 to find each and every question directed to atheists.

But rejoice! I just aswered your question.

Because I provided that answer multiple times during the Christmas season, and I assume that anyone intelligent-enough to use a computer can search and find the relevant questions I previously answered on the topic, rather than posting the question again.

I celebrate a secular gift giving day on the 25th of December but I don't give in to any of the religious overtones.
2011-02-17 14:35:46 UTC
Because its a traditional festival of the pagans banishing the cold.

And the pagans came first. So yeah.

I celebrate everything, including the pagan festival celebrating the return of the sun that was later hijacked by xtians to convert the locals and has more recently been hijacked by consumerism and coca-cola.

Not sure why your question wasn't answered, but as it's been asked a couple of thousand times before, perhaps you could gain some insight from the thousands of previous replies.

I take the day off work because it is a paid holiday. I spend time with my family and friends, I buy presents for my loved ones.. I do not decorate, I do not recognize it's religious significance, I do not "celebrate".

I don't celebrate any of the Christian/capitalist holidays. I make my own at different times of the year.

And what makes you think that religion stealing it and hijacking it from pagan cultures makes it so that only christians can celebrate the winter solstice?
2011-02-17 14:34:19 UTC
because i like festivities of gifts, food, drink, and CHOCOLATE!!!!!. I guess what I celebrate wouldn't be considered Christmas, but Yule
2011-02-17 14:30:21 UTC
Because that's a stupid question. Christians have a misconception that Xmas is their holiday, it's actually stolen from the pagans.
2011-02-17 14:31:04 UTC
because i like to buy the people i care about gifts and its just another excuse for me to get drunk with friends

i follow the pagan traidition of the tree and presents--but have no manager or baby jebus under my tree.

I don't attend any Catholic mass. Why would I?

They deny Christ but want all those free gifts.
