Question:
what can be done if christian teachers at public school are indoctrinating my 2nd grader?
voice_of_reason

he comes home with blatant christian teachings which of course have no proof but will also not give up which teachers are "witnessing" to him

we have to sit him down and deprogram him all the time, show him that what they are telling him is an opinion, even if popular, is not necessarily to be his

my kid's religion or lack of it is my business...

how does a parent go about stopping this?

I'd need specifics, because that sounds very atypical of a sane teacher.

If what you say is true, then you need to go to the prinicipal, then the school board, and then hire a lawyer if no action is taken.

If that actually happened to my child I would be completely up in arms.

Luckily, as a public school teacher myself, I find that none of us really have time (nor the inclination) to do that kind of unprofessional activities.

DO NOT CONTACT THE ACLU THEY DO NOT SUPPORT THE SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE they are more likely to support your teacher's right to preach his/her religion as a free speech right

Contact a secularist organization such as the Freedom from Religion Foundation or American Humanist Association.

Have a meeting with the school principal. Tell them your concerns and ask for an investigation. I had this same problem with my son last year but we knew who it was cause he only had one teacher. The school has to do something about it and if they don't you go straight to the school board and request a meeting. What your sons teachers are doing is breaking the law and if and when you find out who is doing it, they will severely punish them if not fire them. It all depends on how big of an issue you make of it.

So you're scared stiff! What's the matter? Your child shows more sense then his parents? That's what it sounds like to me. You're "telling him its not real" but you fail to show him "how real is your opinion". Look who's calling the kettle black!

Grow up You child will pick his way. Right now I see God equals 2. Satan equals ZERO!

Hurray for God. He'll always win. Good for your child. I will pray very hard for your child to keep learning the right thing at school and pray for the Christian Angel that is making it happen. As for you. Go away Satan, Jesus has kept another soul.

May you fry in hell.

That doesn't sound right. Take it to the board of ed, if you think the principal is allowing this to happen. Indoctrination should NOT take place in public school. Education in the form of history and facts are OK, but religious education in public school is unacceptable. If the board of ed won't do anything about it, I would suggest pulling your child from that school and finding another one. Try a private school, if you have to. If you're able to homeschool, then you may have to do that.

You could also call your local news station and let them know what's happening. Negative publicity has a way of making school boards step in line with the law.

Talk to the principal and if he does nothing go to the school board itself. It is perfectly fine if they have christian teachers but those same teachers should know better. Public school is not the place for them to be preaching their religion.

Well, without proof, you can't really do anything. If other teachers will alibi for them, there is almost nothing that will counter that. You're best bet is to try and find someone sympathetic in administration. Take your complaints to them, be extremly calm and rational, that is VERY IMPORTANT! You will not make any progress if you go in angry and combative.

There is a slim chance of progress if you speak with the teacher about it. Again, be very calm and reasonable, don't threaten, and don't try to make it seem like it's you against them.

Good luck.

Take the matter to the principal. If she won't listen, go to the superintendent. If that fails, go to the school board. You could also go to the paper with your allegations and they might want to do an expose` on it.

Been down this road. Beat the system. It can be done!

Its a tough situation but I think you should keep doing what you are doing. Tell him the other side of things, Im sure he will apreciate it. its also quality time between you both, I think he will also respect you because he will see you as a teacher too and of course also as a parent who cares enough for him.

Good luck

I decided to homeschool for a similar but opposite reason.....my kids were being so indroctrinated with liberal propaganda (in our area most teachers are dems) that it was obvious the teachers had no idea how to stick to facts and leave OPINIONS out of it.

My kids are homeschooled where their beliefs and opinions are not under attack each day and they are exposed to AGE appropriate material. And yes, my oldest son is an atheist. We are happy to have provided them with an environment where they can be themselves

it could be a student witnessing to your child... Would you be mad about that too?

Let your child decide if its a bunch of crock or if Christianity is the way to go. Other wise, you are doing the same thing you think the teacher is doing (shoving religion or lack of it down the childs throat?)

Let your child decide. This is life, your child will hear about it anyways.

EDIT: hahahahaha ADULT CONTENT? Jesus said, let the children come to me..... Let us come like little children. Children are more open to the things of God. If only you could be.......

If you have no proof, how do you know a teacher or a group of teachers is behind it? Are you certain that a 7/8 year old or a group of 7/8 year olds aren't capable of "witnessing" to your kids?
anonymous
2007-12-31 12:17:34 UTC
Simple, arange a meeting with his teachers and let it be known that the religious education of your child is YOUR business. Likely, though, your child is hearing about religion from other children. So you're just going to have to tell him that he's allowed to make up his own decision, but that you hope he'll think about it before he does anything permanent.

If it is a teacher, tell them that if they want to teach children religion, they should get a job at a church, or have some kids of their own. And make sure that the principal is aware of your concerns. Because class time should not be used in prostelytizing.

Edit: Sure, you can TRY and censor what he hears at school, but I wish you luck in that. Children are naturally curious and they'll talk about anything, including going to church with their parents over the weekend. And eventually he will have to make his own decisions. Teaching him rationality and letting him make decisions will be far better for him than trying to keep him from "being influenced."

I know you're pissed off, and I'm sorry you're havingto deal with this. It isn't right. But being angry isn't going to help you or your son get through this.

I think you should express your concerns to the principal. Can't the teachers get into alot of trouble for this? And the school too? You'd be doing them all a favor by letting them know it is not appreciated without making a big stink.

That may be all it takes.

First, send a note to the teaching in writing, citing specific instances and requesting a stop to it. Copy the principal and the board of education. This is illegal and unethical. Write down specific instances. You might consider calling other parents in the class you might have your same point of view - there's strength in numbers.

Very easy, go to your school board hearing and complain like crazy. Tell, em you'll sue if this teacher is not stopped.

Here is one idea to help you along. Don't know it its legal though. Put a wireless listening device on your child that is very discrete. These things can transmit for miles if you get the right one. Record what goes on if possible. Then if you do find this is really going on with your child, I'd take the recording to a local prosecutor.

This sort of situation is the exact reason I am all for the total seperation between church and state. I don't have any children, but if I did, I would want my kids to get a education not indoctrination of a religon from any source in the school, which also includes fellow students.

2007-12-31 12:17:08 UTC
First of all, I don't believe that this is happening, because public schools have extremely strict guidelines regarding witnessing and promoting religion of any kind.

Teachers know they can lose their jobs.

If you have absolute proof this is occurring, you need to contact the principal right away and file a complaint.

If nothing is done, then contact the school board or file a lawsuit.

I am a Christian who sends my child to a private school, but if she went to a public school, I wouldn't want her teachers proselytizing and using their positions to influence her.

Whoa...listen to the voice of reason.......In one breath you are saying "let my child decide," while you just finished saying "we have to sit down and deprogram him." Excuse me, let your child think for his/her self. Sounds like to me you want your child to walk like you, talk like you, smell like you. You are probably the liberal democrat who is pushing for homosexuals to bring their curriculum in and indoctrinate your child that it is acceptable to be a she-he. Well don't be surprised when the garbage you find acceptable comes back and bites you and your wife. How do you go about stopping your child from hearing God's Word? Your time as a parent is very short. Children are smart. More children look at their parents hatred and seek to run the opposite direction themselves. So what you try to stop can't control what God has planned for their lives.

I have four children and the oldest has gone to a few different schools. For the most part Christianity is not allowed to be taught to the kids, but every other occult religion, witchcraft, or atheistic view is. Be thankful if it is Christianity that is being taught. What is wrong with the teachings of a loving God? In the end, your child will reject or accept Jesus's love and it will be his decision. It's better than learning and believing the alternative.

I homeschool because my child had "There is no God." shoved down his throat constantly. Homeschooling is a great way to teach your children the truth, so they do not go to school and get mixed up.

I would go to the school principal, or up the chain to the superintendent if need be and explain that this is against your wishes, and remind them that it is not only unethical, but is also illegal, for someone to interfere with the spiritual upbringing of a minor child without parents' consent. I would hope that would be enough and you wouldn't have to push the issue further.

Good luck!

I use this stuff to my advantage with my kids.

Ask you child some critical thinking questions about what he's being told. Do the stories make sense - I guarantee that even a 2nd grader can see the silliness of these fables right away when encouraged to think about it and not just told it is the truth. I can also assure you that having him think about it will destroy the idiotic ideas much quicker than any reaction you might have with the school and teacher.

Your child will ALWAYS be exposed to this stuff, make him a critical thinker and he will always be protected!

I would contact the school if it is blatant and condoned as well.

If you're in the U.S., you can go to the principal. This type of behavior can get a teacher fired. If you're in the U.K., I think public schools mean something other than what they mean here. But you can do the obvious and take him out of that school.

If you do not like the teachings from a CHRISTIAN school, then don't send your child there. It's that simple. Settle for a public school where your child will pick up fowl language, bad behavior, and where the teachers will not care about your child and teach him nothing. Will you settle for that?

Start by talking to the teacher maybe it's a misunderstanding. From there move up the ladder to the principle and than the superintendent. They should either end it or move your child to another class. If none of this works remove your child from the school and write your congressman.
