Question:
Why do people say you're never too old?

Why do some people insist on saying things such as "you're never too old to live your dreams or accomplish something", when that's obviously not true in many cases. We as humans have limits and at some point it becomes impossible to do certain things. Also why do so many people look down on people try unconventional things if it were so possible. I hear vicious comments all the time when someone tries to do something meant for a younger person.

Is this phrase something from the bible, is that why everyone says it?

I wanted to play sports and try for the Olympics, but i'm 30 years old and have never even got an opportunity for 1 lesson. It's too late, i'm obviously too old to get started now, not saying there aren't any 30 year olds at the Olympics, but not people in my circumstances.

That's just an example, but why do people give others false hope by saying ridiculous things?

We are a race intended on giving people false hope due to our empathetic nature. That is how religion got started, because it brought smiles and purpose into people's lives. Unfortunatly its all not true.

People who look down on others who do things meant for younger people obviously don't say that. Those who say it mean that you shouldn't limit yourself by external circumstances. Okay, it's a bit of a generalization.

If you're 30 and never practiced a sport then it's probably too late to get into the Olympics. However, you could dig down into your dream and find out what it really means to you. Do you want to practice a specific sport and become excellent? Go ahead. The Olympics aren't required for that. The ultimate purpose of living your dream is happiness.

It's a saying not meant to apply to every situation, like, "anything is possible." Yes it is possible for you to start training now, dedicate your life to it, then get into the Olympics, but it is such a difficult task I would encourage you not to even try it. How is that for pragmatic advise? Many people prefer false optimism.

I had a friend who could have run in the Olympics, but he chose not to, because he did not want to dedicate his life to running. He had other interests and other concerns.

When I think of that phrase "you're never too old to do it" I think of things like getting rid of an addiction. Or if you always ate junk food and you decide to eat healthy. if you were always a racist and then decide that you have been a prick all your life and want to change and become a person who likes all races. Where this phrase doesn't apply would be something like if you're 80 and someone tells you it's never too late to deadlift 500 pounds lol

your absolut'ly right on...however there is such a thing as setting obtainable goals.many os us have certain goals that are purely un-obtainable..and meant to be dreams, and imaginary hopes...like sprouting wings, othry things are realistic pieces of those greamsz.like after waiting til i was 50 to sprout wings and magically fly..i decided ti parasail...which was magic and amazing..then skydiving...and so at 54,i can say that i have flown..and im not done yet...and honestly, that hope that one can attain their goals..is simply about hope and motovation...

You are never too old. I mean, physically running a marathon or something may be out of reach, but the way I would interpret that is that you are never too old to be who you were meant to be. Not necessarily fulfill your child-hood dreams of running for president, but to be the person your soul desires to be. You are never too old for that.

i always took it to mean that you shouldn't use your age to keep yourself from doing the things you enjoy. it's not false hope. false hope is a decrepit 90 year old who thinks he can run fast.
